Abstract
The development of degradable food packaging materials with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties is a key to focus in reducing plastic waste. Chitosan is gaining interest for its versatility and easy modification, but its application is limited by the poor hydrophobicity and oleophobicity. Using polymers to modify chitosan films has been shown as a promising approach to solve this issue. In this study, the modified films (CS/xmono-PDMS-E, where x = 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 %) were prepared by utilizing mono-terminal epoxy-terminated polysiloxane (mono-PDMS) and chitosan (CS) through chemical grafting. The qualities of these films were characterized. CS/xmono-PDMS-E films were demonstrated to have enhanced hydrophobicity, oleophobicity, moisture resistance, and thermal stability in comparison to CS films. Furthermore, because SiOSi has a greater bonding energy in the PDMS chain segment, the CS/xmono-PDMS-E films showed superior UV shielding. The resistance to weathering of CS/xmono-PDMS-E films was also greatly enhanced by the low surface energy of PDMS, which moved to the surface during drying. By combining experimental design with result characterization, this work provides a new strategy for bio-based packaging materials featuring with green double sparse coatings, showing great potential for low-carbon recycling applications.

Abstract
This study explores the molecular interactions and structural changes in κ-carrageenan crosslinked with isovanillin to create a biocomposite material suitable for hard capsule and bio-degradable packaging applications. Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy revealed chemical changes in the conjugate molecule, indicating improved electronegativity due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between κ-carrageenan and isovanillin. Time-of-flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis revealed enhanced ion intensity due to intermolecular interactions, particularly between sulphate and hydrogen ions. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) study demonstrated that κ-carrageenan and isovanillin form stronger hydrogen bonds, with a shift in binding energy indicating higher electronegativity. These findings shed light on the molecular mechanisms that underpin the formation of the biocomposite material, as well as its potential for use in hard capsule and biodegradable packaging materials, addressing the need for sustainable alternatives in the pharmaceutical and packaging industries while also contributing to environmental conservation.

Abstract
Antibacterial coatings are becoming increasingly attractive for application in the field of biomaterials. In this framework, we developed polymer coating zirconia with antibacterial activity using the "grafting from" methodology. First, 1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-3-butylimidazolium chloride monomer was synthesized. Then, the surface modification of zirconia substrates was performed with this monomer via surface-initiated photo atom transfer radical polymerization for antibacterial activity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ellipsometry, static contact angle measurements, and an atomic force microscope were used to characterize the films for each step of the surface modification. The results revealed that cationic polymers could be successfully deposited on the zirconia surfaces, and the thickness of the grafted layer steadily increased with polymerization time. Finally, the antibacterial adhesion test was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the modified zirconia substrates, and we successfully showed the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.

Abstract
The increasing amount of nondegradable petroleum-based plastic waste releases chemical hazards, posing a significant threat to the environment and human health. Chitosan, derived from marine wastes, is an attractive feedstock for the preparation of plastic replacement due to its renewable and degradable nature. However, in most cases, complex chemical modifications of chitosan or hybridization with chemicals from fossil resources are required. Herein, we present a high-performance chitosan-based polyimine vitrimer (CS-PI) through a mild and catalyst-free Schiff base reaction between chitosan and vanillin. The CS-PI were formed by integrating dynamic imine bonds into the polymer networks, resulting in superior thermo-processability and mechanical performances. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the CS-PI films reached 38.72 MPa and 3.20 GPa, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of both commercial petroleum-based plastics and bioplastics. Additionally, the CS-PI films exhibited good light transmittance, self-healing ability, reprocess capacity, water resistance, and durability to various organic solvents. Moreover, the CS-PI films could be completely degraded under both acidic and natural conditions, enabling a sustainable circulation. Therefore, this work offers a new design strategy for developing all-natural environmentally friendly polymers as sustainable replacements for petroleum-based plastics, thus reducing the accumulation of nondegradable plastic waste.

Abstract
Chitosan packaging has been widely studied for food preservation, the application of which is expanded by the incorporation of tea polyphenols. This paper reviews the influence of tea polyphenols incorporation on chitosan-based packaging from the perspectives of physicochemical properties, bioactivity used for food preservation, and nutritional value. The physicochemical properties included optical properties, mechanical properties, water solubility, moisture content, and water vapor barrier property, concluding that the addition of tea polyphenols improved the opacity, water solubility, and water vapor barrier property of chitosan packaging, and the mechanical properties and water content were decreased. The bioactivity used for food preservation, that is antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, is enhanced by tea polyphenols, improving the preservation of food like meat, fruits, and vegetables. In the future, efforts will be needed to improve the mechanical properties of composite film and adjust the formula of tea polyphenols/chitosan composite film to apply to different foods. Besides, the identification and development of high nutritional value tea polyphenol/chitosan composite film is a valuable but challenging task. This review is expected to scientifically guide the application of tea polyphenols in chitosan packaging.

Abstract
In the food sector, the formation of biofilms as a result of microbial adherence on food-grade surfaces causes a major problem resulting in significant economic losses. Thereby, this work aimed to elaborate a biodegradable film using chitosan (CS-film) and reinforce its antiadhesion activity by incorporating pelargonium, clove, thyme, and cinnamon essential oils (EOs). Firstly, the antibacterial activity of these EOs alone and combined against four foodborne bacteria were analyzed by the microdilution method. Synergism was observed in the case of EOs combination. Secondly, the physicochemical characteristics and antiadhesion behavior of the CS-films were assessed by the contact angle method and ESEM, respectively. Results revealed that the EOs mixture treatment impacted considerably the physicochemical characteristics of the CS-film and reduced its qualitative and quantitative hydrophobicity. Moreover, the treated CS-film showed a strong antiadhesion behavior against Enterococcus hirae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus with percentages of non-covered surface equal to 97.65 ± 1.43%, 98.76 ± 0.32%, 99.68 ± 0.28%, and 95.63 ± 1.32% respectively. From all these results, the CS-film treated with the mixture of EOs presents a great potential for application as surface coating and food packaging preventing microbial adhesion and thus, avoiding food contamination and spoilage.

Abstract
In this study, a novel concept of nanofiltration process of drinking water based on capillary-driven nanofiltration is demonstrated using a bio-based nanocomposites’ nanofilter as free power: a green and sustainable solution. Based on Lifshitz and Young–Laplace theories, we show that the chitosan (CS), cellulose acetate (CLA), and Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer matrixes demonstrate hydrophobic behavior, which leads to the draining of water from nanopores when negative capillary pressure is applied and consequently prevents the capillary-driven nanofiltration process. By incorporating 10%, 20%, and 30% volume fraction of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) to the polymers’ matrixes, we demonstrate a wetting conversion from hydrophobic to hydrophilic behavior of these polymer nanocomposites. Subsequently, the threshold volume fraction of the TiO2 NPs for the conversion from draining (hydrophobic) to filling (hydrophilic) by capillary pressure were found to be equal to 5.1%, 10.9%, and 13.9%, respectively, for CS/TiO2, CLA/TiO2, and PVDF/TiO2 nanocomposites. Then, we demonstrated the negligible effect of the gravity force on capillary rise as well as the capillary-driven flow for nanoscale pore size. For nanofilters with the same effective nanopore radius, porosity, pore shape factor, and tortuosity, results from the modified Lucas–Washburn model show that the capillary rise as well as the capillary-driven water volume increase with increased volume fraction of the TiO2 NPs for all nanocomposite nanofilter. Interestingly, the capillary-driven water volume was in range (5.26–6.39) L/h·m2 with 30% volume fraction of TiO2 NPs, which support our idea for capillary-driven nanofiltration as zero energy consumption nano-filtration process. Correspondingly, the biodegradable CS/TiO2 and CLA/TiO2 nanocomposites nanofilter demonstrate capillary-driven water volume higher, ~1.5 and ~1.2 times, respectively, more than the synthetic PVDF/TiO2 nanocomposite.

Abstract
This paper discusses the influence of the structure of copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate and alkyl methacrylates with C6-C18 hydrocarbon side groups on the wettability and sorption properties of surface-modified chitosan aerogels. The grafting of copolymers onto the surface of aerogels was confirmed by elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. As a result of the modification, with an increase in the amount of the hydrocarbon substituent alkyl methacrylate, the surface of the resulting materials became hydrophobic with contact angles in the range of 146-157°. At the same time, the water absorption of the aerogels decreased by a factor of 30 compared to that for unmodified aerogels, while the sorption capacity for light oil, diesel fuel, and synthetic motor oil remained at the level of more than 30 g/g. Chitosan aerogels with grafted copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate and alkyl methacrylates retain biodegradation capacity; however, compared to unmodified chitosan, this process has an induction period.

Abstract
Conductive and flexible bio-based materials consisting of chitosan films coated with conductive poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were prepared. Thermal, optical, mechanical, morphological, wettability, and conductive properties were analyzed. In a very simple and effective method of chitosan film modification, a controlled volume of a P3HT solution was deposited onto a previously formed chitosan film, assisted by the spin coating method. Later, P3HT-coated chitosan films were doped by simple contact with an aqueous solution of HAuCl4. The use of HAuCl4 becomes attractive because the reports on the doping process in this type of material using this reagent are still scarce and recent to date. In addition, since this acid is a well-known metal nanoparticle precursor, its use opens new future perspectives for these materials into new applications. The effect of P3HT concentration and doping times on film properties was studied. Attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy allowed us to demonstrate that the presence of the P3HT coating and its doping induce significant changes in the vibrational modes and optoelectronic properties of samples. Additionally, the images obtained by scanning electron microscopy showed a well-distributed and homogeneous coating on the surface of chitosan films. Measured conductivity values of doped film samples fall in the range from 821.3 to 2017.4 S/m, representing, to the best of our knowledge, the highest values reported in the literature for chitosan/chitin-based materials. Indeed, these values are around or even higher than those obtained for some materials purely consisting of conductive polymers.

Chitosan-Graft-Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide)/PVA Cryogels as Carriers for Mucosal Delivery of Voriconazole. Polymers (Basel) 2019; 11:polym11091432. [PMID: 31480489 PMCID: PMC6780328 DOI: 10.3390/polym11091432] [Citation(s) in RCA: 20] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/11/2019] [Revised: 08/28/2019] [Accepted: 08/30/2019] [Indexed: 12/15/2022] Open
Abstract
The objective of this study was to prepare and characterize physically crosslinked gel formulations of chitosan (CS)-graft-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for smart delivery of an antifungal drug, Voriconazole, for mucosal applications. For this purpose, cryogels of CS-g-PNIPAAm/PVA and CS/PVA were tested by means of texture profile analysis and rheology to determine optimal matrix properties for topical application. The ratio of 75/25 v/v % CS-g-PNIPAAm/PVA was selected to be used for formulation since it gave low compressibility and hardness (1.2 and 0.6 N) as well as high adhesion properties and non-Newtonian flow behavior. The cryogels and formulations were further characterized by means of FTIR spectroscopy, swelling behavior, texture analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and TGA), and rheological behavior. The drug loading capacity and in vitro release profile of the drug, storage stability, and cytotoxicity tests were also performed for the gel formulation. The FTIR, DSC, and TGA results verified the successful formation of cryogels. Swelling studies revealed a pH-dependent swelling ability with a maximum swelling degree of 1200% in acid and 990% in phosphate buffer (pH = 7.4). Thermal studies showed that CS-g-PNIPAAm/PVA 75/25 had higher thermal stability proving the structural complexity of the polymer. The loading capacity of Voriconazole was found to be 70% (w/w). The in vitro release profiles of Voriconazole showed Fickian release behavior for CS-g-PNIPAAm/PVA 75/25 gel with an approximate delivery of 38% within 8 h, slower than matrices containing unmodified chitosan. The storage stability test exhibited that the gel formulation was still stable even after aging for two months. Moreover, the cell culture assays revealed a non-toxic character of the polymeric matrix. Overall results showed that the CS-g-PNIPAAm/PVA 75/25 hydrogel has the potential to be used as a smart polymeric vehicle for topical applications.

Abstract
Pullulan (PUL), a linear exo-polysaccharide, is useful in industries as diverse as food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. PUL presents many favorable characteristics, such as renewable origin, biocompatibility, stability, hydrophilic nature, and availability of reactive sites for chemical modification. With an inherent affinity to asialoglycoprotein receptors, PUL can be used for targeted drug delivery to the liver. Besides, these primary properties have been combined with modern synthetic approaches for developing multifunctional biomaterials. This is evident from numerous studies on approaches, such as hydrophobic modification, cross-linking, grafting and transformation as a polyelectrolyte. In this review, we have discussed up-to-date advances on chemical modifications and emerging applications of PUL in targeted theranostics and tissue engineering. Besides, we offer an overview of its applications in food, cosmetics and environment remediation.

Abstract
A chemical modification by grafting alkyl chains using an octanal (C8) on chitosan was conducted with the aim to improve its water resistance for bonding applications. The chemical structure of the modified polymers was determined by NMR analyses revealing two alkylation degrees (10 and 15%). In this study, the flow properties of alkyl-chitosans were also evaluated. An increase in the viscosity was observed in alkyl-chitosan solutions compared with solutions of the same concentration based on native chitosan. Moreover, the evaluation of the adhesive strength (bond strength and shear stress) of both native and alkyl-chitosans was performed on two different double-lap adherends (aluminum and wood). Alkyl-chitosans (10 and 15%) maintain sufficient adhesive properties on wood and exhibit better water resistance compared to native chitosan.
