Controlled graft polymerization on the surface of filter paper via enzyme-initiated RAFT polymerization

Eco-friendly cellulose-based hydrogel functionalized by NIR-responsive multimodal antibacterial polymeric ionic liquid as platform for promoting wound healing

With the trend of sustainable development and the complex medical environment, there is a strong demand for multimodal antibacterial cellulose wound dressing (MACD) with photothermal therapy (PTT). Herein, a novel MACD fabrication strategy with PTT was proposed and implemented through graft polymerization of an imidazolium ionic liquid monomer containing iron complex anion structure. The fabricated hydrogels exhibited excellent antibacterial properties because of the efficient photothermal conversion ability (68.67 %) of ionic liquids and the intrinsic structural characteristic of quaternary ammonium salts. The antibacterial ratio of cellulosic hydrogel dressings to S. aureus and E. coli could reach 99.57 % and 99.16 %, respectively. Additionally, the fabricated hydrogels demonstrated extremely low hemolysis rates (<5 %) and excellent cell viability (~>85 %). Furthermore, in vivo antibacterial experimental results proved that the fabricated antibacterial dressings could significantly accelerate wound healing. Therefore, the proposed strategy would provide a new method of designing and preparing high-performance cellulose wound dressings.

Peroxidase Activity of Myoglobin Variants Reconstituted with Artificial Cofactors

Myoglobin (Mb) can react with hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) to form a highly active intermediate compound and catalyse oxidation reactions. To enhance this activity, known as pseudo-peroxidase activity, previous studies have focused on the modification of key amino acid residues of Mb or the heme cofactor. In this work, the Mb scaffold (apo-Mb) was systematically reconstituted with a set of cofactors based on six metal ions and two ligands. These Mb variants were fully characterised by UV-Vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and native mass spectrometry (nMS). The steady-state kinetics of guaiacol oxidation and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) dehalogenation catalysed by Mb variants were determined. Mb variants with iron chlorin e6 (Fe-Ce6) and manganese chlorin e6 (Mn-Ce6) cofactors were found to have improved catalytic efficiency for both guaiacol and TCP substrates in comparison with wild-type Mb, i. e. Fe-protoporphyrin IX-Mb. Furthermore, the selected cofactors were incorporated into the scaffold of a Mb mutant, swMb H64D. Enhanced peroxidase activity for both substrates were found via the reconstitution of Fe-Ce6 into the mutant scaffold.

Development of Pectin-Based Aerogels with Several Excellent Properties for the Adsorption of Pb2

Traditional aerogels lack specific functional groups for the adsorption of Pb2+, which results in a low adsorption capacity and limits the application scope. Novel porous pectin-based aerogels (PPEAs) were prepared by incorporating polyethylenimine (PEI) using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) as a cross-linker for the removal of Pb2+ from water. The cross-linking mechanism, morphology, mechanical strength, thermal stability, adsorption properties, and mechanism of the aerogels were investigated. The aerogels possessed several desirable features, such as a large maximum Pb2+ adsorption capacity (373.7 mg/g, tested at pH 5.0), ultralight (as low as 63.4 mg/cm3), high mechanical strength (stress above 0.24 MPa at 50% strain), and easy recyclability. Meanwhile, the equilibrium adsorption data was well described by the Langmuir-Freundlich (Sips) model and the kinetic adsorption process was well fitted using the pseudo-second-order model. The donor groups, such as -NH2, and oxygen-containing functional groups were responsible for the Pb2+ adsorption, which was confirmed by the FTIR and XPS analysis. The excellent characteristics mean that PPEAs are highly effective adsorbents in the remediation of lead-containing wastewater.

Graft modification of lignin-based cellulose via enzyme-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and free-radical coupling

In this study, a green approach combining enzyme-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and free-radical coupling was developed for the modification of jute fiber, which is a typical lignin-based cellulose. Jute fiber surface was covered by rich amount of lignin, which offered great opportunities for further functional modification. The controlled polymerization of vinyl monomers, acrylamide (AM) or butyl acrylate (BA), was carried out by horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-initiated RAFT to form well-defined polymers with well-controlled molecular weights and structures. Enzymatic grafting by HRP occurred between the free radicals of well-defined polymers and free radicals of lignin on jute. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis indicated the alkyl chain length of polymers prepared via HRP-initiated RAFT polymerization was well-controlled. Other results of flourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that well-controlled alkyl chains prepared via enzymatic catalysis were grafted on the exposed lignin of jute. The study explores a new and eco-friendly modification method for lignin-based materials with the controlled graft chain structure via two different catalysis with HRP.

Derivatization approaches and applications of pullulan

Pullulan (PUL), a linear exo-polysaccharide, is useful in industries as diverse as food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. PUL presents many favorable characteristics, such as renewable origin, biocompatibility, stability, hydrophilic nature, and availability of reactive sites for chemical modification. With an inherent affinity to asialoglycoprotein receptors, PUL can be used for targeted drug delivery to the liver. Besides, these primary properties have been combined with modern synthetic approaches for developing multifunctional biomaterials. This is evident from numerous studies on approaches, such as hydrophobic modification, cross-linking, grafting and transformation as a polyelectrolyte. In this review, we have discussed up-to-date advances on chemical modifications and emerging applications of PUL in targeted theranostics and tissue engineering. Besides, we offer an overview of its applications in food, cosmetics and environment remediation.

Fuzzy Optimization on the Synthesis of Chitosan-Graft-Polyacrylic Acid with Montmorillonite as Filler Material: A Case Study

In this paper, the synthesis of a chitosan–montmorillonite nanocomposite material grafted with acrylic acid is presented based on its function in a case study analysis. Fuzzy optimization is used for a multi-criteria decision analysis to determine the best desirable swelling capacity (Y_Q) of the material synthesis at its lowest possible variable cost. For Y_Q, the integrating the result’s cumulative uncertainty is an essential element to investigate the feasibility of the developed model equation. The Pareto set analysis is able to set the appropriate boundary limits for Y_Q and the variable cost. Two case studies are presented in determining the lowest possible cost: Case 1 for maximum Y_Q, and Case 2 for minimum Y_Q. These boundary limits were used in the fuzzy optimization to determine its global optimum results that achieved the overall satisfaction ratings of 67.2% (Case 1) and 52.3% (Case 2). The synthesis of the polyacrylic acid/chitosan material for Case 1 resulted in 305 g/g Y_Q and 10.8 USD/kg, while Case 2 resulted in 97 g/g Y_Q and 12.3 USD/kg. Thus, the fuzzy optimization approach proves to be a practical method for examining the best possible compromise solution based on the desired function to adequately synthesize a material.
