Fluorescent chitosan hydrogel for highly and selectively sensing of p-nitrophenol and 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol

Strategy for establishing sensitive fluorescent sensor toward p-nitrophenol integrating magnetic molecularly imprinted materials and carbon dots

In this work, a sensitive fluorescent sensor toward p-nitrophenol (4-NP) integrating magnetic molecularly imprinted materials and carbon dots (CDs) was proposed. Magnetic material and CDs derived from K3 [Fe(CN)6] and glucose were simultaneously obtained through simple one-step hydrothermal process. Introducing of molecularly imprinted materials based magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) endowed the constructed fluorescent sensor with higher sensitivity and selectivity. The significant factors affecting the sensitivity of the sensor toward 4-NP were optimized. Good linearity was obtained between fluorescent intensity of CDs and different concentration of 4-NP from 0.08 to 62.5 μg L-1. The sensitivity of constructed sensor was very low with detection limit of 0.02 μg L-1. Reliable applicability was also proved by the well-pleasing recoveries of 94.2-97.8% with different spiked concentrations of 4-NP in real environmental waters.

Affinity Peptide-Tethered Suspension Hydrogel Sensor for Selective and Sensitive Detection of Influenza Virus

Influenza viruses are known to cause pandemic flu outbreaks through both inter-human and animal-to-human transmissions. Therefore, the rapid and accurate detection of such pathogenic viruses is crucial for effective pandemic control. Here, we introduce a novel sensor based on affinity peptide-immobilized hydrogel microspheres for the selective detection of influenza A virus (IAV) H3N2. To enhance the binding affinity performance, we identified novel affinity peptides using phage display and further optimized their design. The functional hydrogel microspheres were constructed using the drop microfluidic technique, employing a structure composed of natural (chitosan) and synthetic (poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate and PEG 6 kDa) polymers with the activation of azadibenzocyclooctyne for the subsequent click chemistry reaction. The binding peptide-immobilized hydrogel microsphere (BP-Hyd) was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and exhibited selective detection capability for the IAV H3N2. To capture the detected IAV H3N2, a Cy3-labeled IAV hemagglutinin antibody was utilized. By incorporating the affinity peptide with hydrogel microspheres, we achieved quantitative and selective detection of IAV H3N2 with a detection limit of 1.887 PFU mL-1. Furthermore, the developed suspension sensor exhibited excellent reproducibility and showed reusability potential. Our results revealed that the BP-Hyd-based fluorescence sensor platform could be feasibly employed to detect other pathogens because the virus-binding peptides can be easily replaced with other peptides through phage display, enabling selective and sensitive binding to different targets.

An efficient chitosan-naphthalimide fluorescent probe for simultaneous detection and adsorption of Hg2+ and its application in seafood, water and soil environments

As a virulent heavy metal ion, Hg2+ will lead to a serious threat to ecosystem and human health. In this work, we reported a chitosan-naphthalimide fluorescent probe CS-NA-ITC for specific recognition and efficient adsorption of Hg2+. CS-NA-ITC showed no fluorescence in solution state, while the fluorescence intensity increased obviously at the presence of Hg2+, accompanied by the fluorescence color becomes from colorless to bright yellow. It displayed favorable properties like low detection limit (73 nM), extensive pH detection range (5-10) and excellent anti-interference ability. The binding pattern of CS-NA-ITC to Hg2+ was verified by Job's plot, XPS analysis and FT-IR test. In addition, CS-NA-ITC was utilized to recognition of Hg2+ in actual water and soil samples and seafood products. Furthermore, the CS-NA-ITC hydrogel could be employed as an efficient Hg2+ adsorbent with good reusability, which adsorption ability was enhanced compared to chitosan hydrogel.

Progress in preparation and properties of chitosan-based hydrogels

Chitosan is a kind of natural polysaccharide biomass with the second highest content in nature after cellulose, which has good biological properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, hemostasis, mucosal adsorption, non-toxicity, and antibacterial properties. Therefore, hydrogels prepared from chitosan have the advantages of good hydrophilicity, unique three-dimensional network structure, and good biocompatibility, so they have received extensive attention and research in environmental testing, adsorption, medical materials, and catalytic supports. Compared with traditional polymer hydrogels, biomass chitosan-based hydrogels have advantages such as low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, outstanding processability, and low cost. This paper reviews the preparation of various chitosan-based hydrogels using chitosan as raw material and their applications in the fields of medical materials, environmental detection, catalytic carriers, and adsorption. Some views and prospects are put forward for the future research and development of chitosan-based hydrogels, and it is believed that chitosan-based hydrogels will be able to obtain more valuable applications.

Synthesis of corn bract cellulose-based Au3+ fluorescent probe and its application in composite membranes

To achieve real-time monitoring of Au³⁺, a corn bract cellulose-based fluorescent probe MAC-1 for was synthesized. MAC-1 showed good fluorescence properties in DMF-H₂O (1:9, v/v, pH = 7.4) solution, showed a fluorescence emission peak at 520 nm with quenching fluorescence properties for Au³⁺. The structure of MAC-1 was analyzed by SEM (Sample microstructure images), XRD (X-ray diffraction), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), ¹H NMR, Elemental analysis, EDS, Mapping and TG (Thermogravimetry) were analyzed. The fluorescence properties of the probe were also characterized by UV spectrophotometer and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results showed that the recognition of Au³⁺ by the probe MAC-1 exhibited high selectivity and high sensitivity. Moreover, it is highly resistant to interference and has a short response time, which can be rapidly responded within 1 min. In addition, to improve the practical application of the probe, the probe was prepared as a fluorescent composite film and the fluorescence effect shown by the fluorescent composite film is consistent with the fluorescence change of the probe MAC-1 itself. The fluorescent composite film also has excellent selectivity and good overall physical and mechanical properties. This study provides a meaningful reference for the detection of Au³⁺ and further expands the application field of agroforestry waste.

A naphthalimide functionalized chitosan-based fluorescent probe for specific detection and efficient adsorption of Cu2

As one of the most abundant metal ions, Cu²⁺ has turned into a great threat to human health and the natural environment due to its widely utilized in various industries. In this paper, a chitosan-based fluorescent probe CTS-NA-HY for detection and adsorption of Cu²⁺ was rationally prepared. CTS-NA-HY exhibited a specific "turn off" fluorescence response to Cu²⁺ and the fluorescence color changed from bright yellow to colorless. It possessed satisfactory detection performance to Cu²⁺ including good selectivity and anti-interference, low detection limit (29 nM) and wide pH range (4-9). The detection mechanism was confirmed by Job's plot, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FT-IR and ¹H NMR analysis. Additionally, the probe CTS-NA-HY was capacity of determining Cu²⁺ in environmental water and soil samples. Besides, CTS-NA-HY-based hydrogel could also remove Cu²⁺ in aqueous solution effectively, which the ability of adsorption was greatly improved compared with original chitosan hydrogel.

Study on Fluorescence Recognition of Fe3+, Cr2O72- and p-Nitrophenol by a Cadmium Complex and Related Mechanism

The effective detection of environmental pollutants is very important to the sustainable development of human health and the environment. A luminescent Cd(II) coordination complex, {[Cd(dbtdb)(1,2,4-H3btc)]·0.5H2O}n (1) (dbtdb = 1-(2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-4-((2-(thiazol-4-yl)-2H-benzo[d]imidazol-3(3aH)-yl)methyl)benzyl)-2,7a-dihydro-2-(thiazol-4-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole, 1,2,4-H3btc = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid), was obtained by hydrothermal reactions. Complex 1 has a chain structure decorated with uncoordinated Lewis basic O and S donors and provides good sensing of Fe3+, Cr2O72-, and p-nitrophenol with fluorescence quenching through an energy transfer process. The calculated binding constants were 3.3 × 103 mol-1 for Fe3+, 2.36 × 104 mol-1 for Cr2O72-, and 9.3 × 103 mol-1 for p-nitrophenol, respectively. These results show that 1 is a rare multiresponsive sensory material for efficient detection of Fe3+, Cr2O72-, and p-nitrophenol.

Ionic crosslinking of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan fluorescent hydrogel for bacterial detection and sterilization

Herein, a polysaccharide-based fluorescent hydrogel with multi-responsiveness simply implemented by concurrent effects of ionic crosslinking/rehydration processes is presented. Specifically, the alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan are chosen to prepare the interpenetrating polymer matrix while a pair of metal cations has been selectively sequentially integrated to alter hydrogel mechanical and fluorescent properties. Experimental results indicate the hydrogels show tunable fluorescent emission in response to multiple cations and pH conditions, and display a reversible "ON/OFF" fluorescent response to Mⁿ⁺/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Moreover, this synergistic ionic crosslinking strategy is proved to be highly effective in preparing multifunctional metallohydrogels possessing robust/anisotropic mechanical properties, typical shape memory and cation/pH-responsive fluorescence performance, and a proof-of-application for bacterial detection and sterilization has also been demonstrated. Therefore, we believe this study would provide new insights into multifunctional luminescent hydrogels for advanced biomedical systems.

Xerogels Morphology Details by Multifractal Analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy Images Evaluations of 5-Fluorouracil Release from Chitosan-Based Matrix

Four medicament delivery formulations based on 5-fluorouracil in a chitosan substantial matrix were realized in situ via 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal element hydrogelation. Representative samples of the final realized compounds were investigated from an analytic, constitutional, and morphological viewpoint via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM images of the formulations were investigated in concordance with fractal analysis, and the fractal dimensions and lacunarity were computed. The developed mathematical multifractal model is necessarily confirmed by the experimental measurements corresponding to the 5-fluorouracil release outside the chitosan-formed matrix.

A Multifractal Vision of 5-Fluorouracil Release from Chitosan-Based Matrix

A suite of four drug deliverance formulations grounded on 5-fluorouracil enclosed in a chitosan-founded intercellular substance was produced by 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal with in situ hydrogelation. The formulations have been examined from a morphological and structural point of view by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and microscopy with polarized light, respectively. The polarized optical microscopy (POM) pictures of the three representative formulations obtained were investigated by fractal analysis. The fractal dimension and lacunarity of each of them were thus calculated. In this paper, a novel theoretical method for mathematically describing medicament deliverance dynamics in the context of the polymeric medicament constitution limit has been advanced. Assuming that the polymeric drug motion unfolds only on the so-called non-differentiable curves (considered mathematically multifractal curves), it looks like in a one-dimensional hydrodynamic movement within a multifractal formalism, the drug-release physics models are provided by isochronous kinetics, but at a scale of resolution necessarily non-differentiable.

Infectious Inflammatory Processes and the Role of Bioactive Agent Released from Imino-Chitosan Derivatives Experimental and Theoretical Aspects

The paper focuses on the development of a multifractal theoretical model for explaining drug release dynamics (drug release laws and drug release mechanisms of cellular and channel-type) through scale transitions in scale space correlated with experimental data. The mathematical model has been developed for a hydrogel system prepared from chitosan and an antimicrobial aldehyde via covalent imine bonds. The reversible nature of the imine linkage points for a progressive release of the antimicrobial aldehyde is controlled by the reaction equilibrium shifting to the reagents, which in turn is triggered by aldehyde consumption in the inhibition of the microbial growth. The development of the mathematical model considers the release dynamic of the aldehyde in the scale space. Because the release behavior is dictated by the intrinsic properties of the polymer–drug complex system, they were explained in scale space, showing that various drug release dynamics laws can be associated with scale transitions. Moreover, the functionality of a Schrödinger-type differential equation in the same scale space reveals drug release mechanisms of channels and cellular types. These mechanisms are conditioned by the intensity of the polymer–drug interactions. It was demonstrated that the proposed mathematical model confirmed a prolonged release of the aldehyde, respecting the trend established by in vitro release experiments. At the same time, the properties of the hydrogel recommend its application in patients with intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) complicated by chronic endometritis as an alternative to the traditional antibiotics or antifungals.

Shaping Macromolecules for Sensing Applications—From Polymer Hydrogels to Foldamers

Sensors are tools for detecting, recognizing, and recording signals from the surrounding environment. They provide measurable information on chemical or physical changes, and thus are widely used in diagnosis, environment monitoring, food quality checks, or process control. Polymers are versatile materials that find a broad range of applications in sensory devices for the biomedical sector and beyond. Sensory materials are expected to exhibit a measurable change of properties in the presence of an analyte or a stimulus, characterized by high sensitivity and selectivity of the signal. Signal parameters can be tuned by material features connected with the restriction of macromolecule shape by crosslinking or folding. Gels are crosslinked, three-dimensional networks that can form cavities of different sizes and forms, which can be adapted to trap particular analytes. A higher level of structural control can be achieved by foldamers, which are macromolecules that can attain well-defined conformation in solution. By increasing control over the three-dimensional structure, we can improve the selectivity of polymer materials, which is one of the crucial requirements for sensors. Here, we discuss various examples of polymer gels and foldamer-based sensor systems. We have classified and described applied polymer materials and used sensing techniques. Finally, we deliberated the necessity and potential of further exploration of the field towards the increased selectivity of sensory devices.

Amphiphilic chitosan-g-poly(trimethylene carbonate) - A new approach for biomaterials design

The paper presents the synthesis and characterization of poly(trimethylene carbonate) grafted chitosan as a new water soluble biopolymer suitable for in vivo applications. The synthesis was performed via ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxan-2-one (trimethylene carbonate) (TMC) monomer, initiated by the functional groups of chitosan in the presence of toluene as solvent/swelling agent. By varying the molar ratio between the glucosamine units of chitosan and TMC, a series of chitosan derivatives with different content of poly(trimethylene carbonate) chains was synthetized. The structural characterization of the polymers was realized by FTIR and ¹H NMR spectroscopy and their solubility was assessed in water and in organic solvents as well. The biocompatibility was investigated by MTS assay on Normal Human Dermal Fibroblasts, and the biodegradability was evaluated in lysozyme buffer solution. Further, the surface properties of the polymer films were analyzed by polarized optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and water-to-air contact angle measurements. It was established that, by 5% substitution of chitosan with poly(trimethylene carbonate) chains having an average polymerization degree of 7, a water soluble polymer can be attained. Compared to the pristine chitosan, it has improved biocompatibility in solution and moderate wettability and higher biodegradability rate in solid state, pointing its suitability for in vivo applications.

Fluorescent dialdehyde-BODIPY chitosan hydrogel and its highly sensing ability to Cu2+ ion

Fluorescent hydrogel with proper hydrophilicity and thermal stability, excellent sensitivity and high selectivity has important practical and scientific significance, especially in heavy metal ion detection. In this work, by adjusting the content of [2, 6-Bis-[4-formylthiophene]]-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyl-4, 4-difluoroborazaindoloene (B3), as a cross-linking agent, a series of chitosan- fluoroboron dipyrrole-chitosan-based fluorescent hydrogels (CBC) with large stokes shift were designed and prepared. The hydrogels can be used as fluorescent probes for identifying Cu²⁺ in aqueous solution. The linear quenching range of Cu²⁺ is 0-50 μM, and the detection limit and quenching constant are 4.75 μM and 3.52 × 10⁴ M^-1, respectively. Under the interaction of Cu²⁺, the imine bond CN was converted to C- N bond, which causes the phenomenon of fluorescence quenching. In addition, relatively high crosslink density improves hydrophilicity and thermal stability of initial chitosan, and made the swelling ability better.

N-alkylation briefly constructs tunable multifunctional sensor materials: Multianalyte detection and reversible adsorption

A series of N-alkyl-substituted polybenzimidazoles (SPBIs), synthesized by simple condensation and N-alkylation, act as functional materials with tunable microstructures and sensing performance. For their controllable morphologies, the formation of nano-/microspheres is observed at the n(RBr)/n(PBI) feed ratio of 5:1. Products with different degrees of alkylation can recognize metal ions and nitroaromatic compounds (NACs). For example, SPBI-c, obtained at the feed ratio of 1:1, can selectively detect Cu2+, Fe3+, and NACs. By contrast, SPBI-a, obtained at the feed ratio of 0.1:1, can exclusively detect Cu2+ with high sensitivity. Their sensing mechanisms have been studied by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, XPS, and DFT calculations. Interestingly, the SPBIs can adsorb Cu2+ in solution and show good recyclability. These results demonstrate that polymeric materials with both sensing and adsorption applications can be realized by regulating the alkylation extent of the main chain, thus providing a new approach for the facile synthesis of multifunctional materials.

Chitosan based macromolecular probes for the selective detection and removal of Fe3+ ion

Chitosan has been widely used due to its biodegradable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly properties. Modification of chitosan attracts much attention as promising methods to detect and remove organic and inorganic pollutants. In this work, chitosan-based macromolecular probes were designed and synthesized. The probes can detect Fe³⁺ in the presence of other metal ions. The detection mechanism is investigated as well. The probe's fluorescence quenching upon the addition of Fe³⁺ ion could be ascribed to the complexation between the electron-deficient ion Fe³⁺ and "C=N" (electron-rich group) of fluorescent chitosan probes. What's more, the obtained fluorescent macromolecular probes can be used for the removal of Fe³⁺ in solution. The probes could adsorb the Fe³⁺ in solution and the removal efficiency can reach as high as 62.0% while the removal efficiency of original chitosan is only 16.0%. The probes have good selective detection for Fe³⁺ and the detection limit reaches 1.2 μM.

A theoretical mathematical model for assessing diclofenac release from chitosan-based formulations

The paper reports a new mathematical model for understanding the mechanism delivery from drug release systems. To do this, two drug release systems based on chitosan and diclofenac sodium salt as a drug model, were prepared by in situ hydrogelation in the presence of salicylaldehyde. The morphology of the systems was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and polarized light microscopy and the drug release was in vitro investigated into a medium mimicking the in vivo environment. The drug release mechanism was firstly assessed by fitting the in vitro release data on five traditional mathematical model. In the context of pharmacokinetics behavioral analysis, a new mathematical procedure for describing drug release dynamics in polymer-drug complex systems was proposed. Assuming that the dynamics of polymer-drug system's structural units take place on continuous and nondifferentiable curves (multifractal curves), it was showed that in a one-dimensional hydrodynamic formalism of multifractal variables the drug release mechanism is given through synchronous dynamics at a differentiable and non-differentiable scale resolutions.

Phenothiazine-chitosan based eco-adsorbents: A special design for mercury removal and fast naked eye detection

The aim of the paper was to investigate the ability of an eco-friendly luminescent xerogel prepared by chitosan crosslinking with a phenothiazine luminogen to detect and remove heavy metals. Its ability to give a divergent morphological and optical response towards fifteen environmental relevant metals was investigated by naked eye and UV lamp, fluorescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A distinct response was noted for mercury, consisting in the transformation of the xerogel into a rubber-like material accompanied by the red shifting of the color of emitted light from yellow-green to greenish-yellow domain. The particularities of the metals anchoring into the xerogel were analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The morphological changes and the metal uptake were analyzed by SEM-EDAX, swelling and gravimetric methods. It was concluded that mercury has a superior affinity towards this heteroatoms rich system, leading to a secondary crosslinking. This directed a great absorption capacity of 1673 mg/g and a specific morphological response for mercury ion concentrations up to 0.001 ppm.

Fabrication of CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogels for highly efficient catalytic reduction of organic pollutants

In this study, natural polymer material chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) with large specific surface area were used to prepare a new CS/RGO-based composite hydrogel by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as cross-linking agent. In addition, a CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was prepared by loading palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). The morphologies and microstructures of the prepared hydrogels were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, TG, and BET. The catalytic performance of the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was analyzed, and the experimental results showed that the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel had good catalytic performance for degradation of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) and o-nitroaniline (2-NA). Therefore, this study has potential application prospect in wastewater treatment and provides new information for composite hydrogel design.

New functional CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogels are prepared via a self-assembly process, demonstrating potential applications in catalysis as well as composite materials.

A Novel pH- and Salt-Responsive N-Succinyl-Chitosan Hydrogel via a One-Step Hydrothermal Process

In this study, we synthesized a series of pH-sensitive and salt-sensitive N-succinyl-chitosan hydrogels with N-succinyl-chitosan (NSCS) and the crosslinker glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) via a one-step hydrothermal process. The structure and morphology analysis of the NSCS and glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane-N-succinyl chitosan hydrogel (GNCH) revealed the close relation between the swelling behavior of hydrogels and the content of crosslinker GPTMS. The high GPTMS content could weaken the swelling capacity of hydrogels and improve their mechanical properties. The hydrogels show high pH sensitivity and reversibility in the range of pH 1.0 to 9.0, and exhibit on-off switching behavior between acidic and alkaline environments. In addition, the hydrogels perform smart swelling behaviors in NaCl, CaCl2, and FeCl3 solutions. These hydrogels may have great potential in medical applications.
