Fabrication of water/oil-resistant paper by nanocellulose stabilized Pickering emulsion and chitosan

Developing plastic/fluorine/silicon-free and degradable water/oil-resistant coatings for paper-based packaging materials to replace disposable plastic products is a very effective way to solve the problem of 'white pollution' or microplastics pollution. A novel water/oil-resistant coating was developed by alkyl ketene dimer (AKD)-based Pickering emulsion and chitosan in this work. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were used as a stabilizing solid for AKD emulsion, with the addition of chitosan as an oil-resistance agent. The coating provides excellent hydrophobicity, water/oil resistance as well as good barrier properties. The water contact angle was as high as 130° and the minimum Cobb60 value was 5.7 g/m2, which was attributed to the hydrophobicity of AKD. In addition, the kit rating reached maximum 12/12 at coating weight of 8.26 g/m2 and the water vapor transmittance rate (WVTR) was reduced to 153.4 g/(m2⋅day) at the coating weight of 10.50 g/m2. The tensile strength of the paper was increased from 28.1 to 43.6 MPa after coating. Overall, this coating can effectively improve the performance of paper-based materials, which may play an important role in the process of replacing disposable plastic packaging with paper-based materials.

Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes as Flocculants and Retention Aids in Wet-End Papermaking

As the criteria of energy conservation, emission reduction, and environmental protection become more important, and with the development of wet-end papermaking, developing excellent retention aids is of great significance. Spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPBs) bearing polyelectrolyte chains grafted densely to the surface of core particle have the potential to be novel retention aids in wet-end papermaking not only because of their spherical structure, but also due to controllable grafting density and molecular weight. Such characteristics are crucial in order to design multi-functional retention aids in sophisticated papermaking systems. This review presents some important recent advances with respect to retention aids, including single-component system and dual-component systems. Then, basic theory in papermaking is also briefly reviewed. Based on these advances, it emphatically describes spherical polyelectrolyte brushes, focused on their preparation methods, characterization, conformation, and applications in papermaking. This work is expected to contribute to improve a comprehensive understanding on the composition, properties, and function mechanisms of retention aids, which helps in the further investigation on the design of novel retention aids with excellent performance.

Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride: The Question of Covalent Bonding and Chemistry Considerations for Better Sizing-Review

Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride (ASA) is a sizing agent used in papermaking to increase the water repellency of paper. Almost 60 years after the introduction of the chemical in papermaking, scientists still have differing views on how ASA interacts with cellulose. Several experiments were conducted to bring more clarity to the ASA sizing mechanism, especially on the contentious question of ASA-cellulose covalent bonding or the esterification reaction between ASA and cellulose during papermaking. Herein, research papers and patents, including experiments and results, from the 1960s to 2020 were reviewed. Our investigation revealed that the ester bond formation between ASA and cellulose is insignificant and is not a prerequisite for sizing effectiveness; the main ASA-related material found in sized paper is hydrolyzed ASA or both hydrolyzed ASA and ASA salt. In addition, ASA emulsion stability and ASA emulsion retention are important for sizing efficiency improvement.

A Colorimetric Ag+ Probe for Food Real-Time Visual Monitoring

Monitoring food quality throughout the food supply chain is critical to ensuring global food safety and minimizing food losses. Here we find that simply by mixing an aqueous solution of sugar-stabilized Ag+ and amines in an open vessel leads to the generation of Ag NPs and an intelligent evaluation system based on a colorimetric Ag+ probe is developed for real-time visual monitoring of food freshness. The self-assembly reaction between methylamine (MA) generated during meat storage and the colorimetric Ag+ probe produces different color changes that indicate changes in the quality of the meat. The colorimetric Ag+ probe was integrated into food packaging systems for real-time monitoring of chilled broiler meat freshness. The proposed evaluation system provides a versatile approach for detecting biogenic amines and monitoring chilled broiler meat freshness and it has the advantages of high selectivity, real-time and on-site measurements, sensitivity, economy, and safety and holds great public health significance.
