Glucaric acid additives for the antiplasticization of fibers wet spun from cellulose acetate/acetic acid/water

Highly flexible carbon nitride-polyethylene glycol-cellulose acetate film with photocatalytic antibacterial activity for fruit preservation

Cellulose acetate film, as a biodegradable and biomass-derived material, has great potential applications in food packaging. However, the poor mechanical and antibacterial properties limit its applications. Herein, a highly flexible carbon nitride-polyethylene glycol-cellulose acetate (CN-PEG-CA) film was successfully prepared by combining graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst with cellulose acetate (CA). The g-C3N4 enables the film with antibacterial activity, as a green photocatalyst. PEG softens the rigid polymer CA and crosslinks CA, PEG, and g-C3N4 together by hydrogen bonding, as a flexible crosslinker. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) characterizations confirmed the successful preparation of the CN-PEG-CA film. The mechanical property tests demonstrated that adding PEG increased the elongation at break of the film by about 4 times. The composite film had high antibacterial activity, and the bactericidal rates on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 99.98 % and 99.89 %, respectively. It effectively extended the shelf life of strawberries to 96 h and effectively maintained the quality of strawberries during storage. After 96 h, the weight loss rate of strawberries packaged with 15 % CN-PEG-CA film was 21.83 %, vitamin C content was 45.47 %, titratable acidity content was 0.89 %, and color, hardness and total soluble solids were well maintained. And biocompatibility test results showed that the film was safe and nontoxic. From the ecological and economic point of view, the highly flexible and biodegradable films with efficient photocatalytic antibacterial activity synthesized in this paper have great potential in the field of food packaging.

Using Sodium Polyacrylate to Gel-Spin Lignin/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Fiber at High Lignin Content

Lignin is the world’s most naturally abundant aromatic polymer, which makes it a sustainable raw material for engineered polymers and fiber manufacturing. Dry-jet gel-spinning was used to fabricate poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fibers having 30% or more of the lignin biopolymer. To achieve this goal, 0.45 wt.% of aqueous sodium polyacrylate (SPA, at 0.55 wt.% solids) was added to spinning dopes of PVA dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). SPA served to enable the spinning of fibers having high lignin content (i.e., above 30%) while eliminating the aging of as-spun gel fiber prior to elevated temperature drawing. SPA impedes the migration of acetone soluble lignin from the skin of as-spun gel fibers, because SPA is insoluble in acetone, which is also a nonsolvent coagulant for PVA. PVA fibers having 30% lignin exhibited the highest tenacity of 1.3 cN/dtex (centinewton/decitex) and specific modulus 35.7 cN/dtex. The drawn fiber of 70% lignin to PVA, showed tenacity and specific modulus values of 0.94 cN/dtex and 35.3 cN/dtex, respectively. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed evidence of hydrogen bonding between lignin and PVA among the drawn fibers. The modification of PVA/lignin dopes with SPA, therefore, allowed for the fabrication of gel-spun biobased fibers without the previously required step of gel aging.

Identifying Citric Acid Esters, a Class of Phthalate Substitute Plasticizers, in Indoor Dust via an Integrated Target, Suspect, and Characteristic Fragment-Dependent Screening Strategy

Citrate acid esters (CAEs) have been proposed as a class of phthalate substitute plasticizers; however, information on their occurrence in indoor environments is rare. By using liquid chromatography coupled with a quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometer, we developed an integrated strategy that can be applied for target, suspect, and characteristic fragment-dependent screening of CAEs. In n = 50 indoor dust samples collected from Nanjing City (China), three CAEs, namely, acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC; mean: 412,000 ng/g), tributyl citrate (TBC, 11,600 ng/g), and triethyl citrate (TEC, 10,900 ng/g), exhibited the greatest contamination levels. Total concentrations of CAEs (∑₈CAEs) were statistically significantly (p < 0.01) greater than those of common organophosphate triesters (OPTEs), a class of ubiquitous contaminants in dust. Suspect and characteristic fragment-dependent screening (m/z 111.0078 ([C₅H₃O₃]⁺) and m/z 129.0181 ([C₅H₅O₄]⁺)) of CAEs were further conducted for the same batch of samples. We tentatively identified six novel CAEs, and the most frequent and abundant CAE was fully identified as tributyl aconitate (TBA). Statistically significant correlation relationships were observed on dust levels between TBA vs ATBC (r = 0.650; p < 0.01) and TBA vs TBC (r = 0.384; p < 0.01), suggesting their similar sources in dust samples.

Strengthening Regenerated Cellulose Fibers Sourced from Recycled Cotton T-Shirt Using Glucaric Acid for Antiplasticization

The recycling of cellulose from cotton textiles would minimize the use of virgin crop fibers, but recycled polymers are generally inferior in mechanical performance to those made from virgin resins. This challenge prompted the investigation of biobased additives that were capable of improving the mechanical properties of fibers by means of antiplasticizing additives. In this study, regenerated cellulose (RC) fibers were spun from cellulose found in cotton T-shirts, and fibers were mechanically strengthened with glucaric acid (GA), a nontoxic product of fermentation. The recycled pulp was activated using aqueous sodium hydroxide and then followed by acid neutralization, prior to the direct dissolution in lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide (LiCl/DMAc) at 3 wt.% cellulose. At 10% (w/w) GA, the tensile modulus and strength of regenerated cellulose from recycled cotton fibers increased five-fold in contrast to neat fibers without GA. The highest modulus and tenacity values of 664 cN/dtex and of 9.7 cN/dtex were reported for RC fibers containing GA.
