Interaction of hairy carboxyalkyl cellulose nanocrystals with cationic surfactant: Effect of carbon spacer

Modification and characterization of a novel and fluorine-free cellulose nanofiber with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties

In this study, a brand-new, easy, and environmentally friendly approach for chemically functionalizing 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) to produce modified cellulose nanofiber (octadecylamine-citric acid-CNF) was proposed. Effects of octadecylamine (ODA)/TOCNF mass ratio on the chemical structure, morphology, surface hydrophobicity and oleophobicity were studied. According to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, ODA was successfully grafted onto the TOCNF by simple citric acid (CA) esterification and amidation reactions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that a new rough structure was formed on the ODA-CA-CNF surface. The water contact angle (WCA) and the castor oil contact angle (OCA) of the ODA-CA-CNF reached 139.6° and 130.6°, respectively. The high-grafting-amount ODA-CA-CNF was sprayed onto paper, and the OCA reached 118.4°, which indicated good oil-resistance performance. The low-grafting-amount ODA-CNF was applied in a pH-responsive indicator film, exhibiting a colour change in response to the pH level, which can be applied in smart food packaging. The ODA-CA-CNF with excellent water/oil-resistance properties and fluorine-free properties can replace petrochemical materials and can be used in the fields of fluorine-free oil-proof paper.

Assessing the complementarity of time domain NMR, solid-state NMR and dynamic vapor sorption in the characterization of polysaccharide-water interactions

Characterizing the hygroscopic behavior of macromolecular assemblies is crucial for understanding biological processes as well as to develop tailor-made polysaccharides-based products. In this work, assemblies consisting of nanocelluloses (CNC or CNF) and/or glucomannan in different ratio were studied at different water activity levels, using a multi-analytical approach that combined Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS), Time-Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (TD-NMR) and solid-state NMR (ss-NMR). The water retention capacity of the films, as a function of their composition, showed that an enrichment in konjac glucomannan in association with cellulose increased the water absorption capacity but decreased the water retention capacity. In addition, the combination of CNC and glucomannan appears to reduce the water absorption capacity of each polymer. Correlating the findings from the various methods allowed us to propose the use of TD-NMR data for predicting the water retention capacity. These results, summarized in a schematic representation, offer new insights into the organization of water molecules in polysaccharide assemblies in various humidity conditions.

Amino-functionalized nanocellulose aerogels for the superior adsorption of CO2 and separation of CO2/CH4 mixture gas

Nanocellulose-based aerogels have been considered as one of the ideal candidates for CO2 capture in practical applications owing to their lightweight and porous properties. Additionally, various adsorbents with amine groups have been widely used as effective CO2 capture and storage strategies. Herein, amino-functionalized aerogels were prepared by sol-gel and freeze-drying methods using two typical nanocelluloses (cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)) as substrates. In addition, the reaction parameters for grafting and amino functionalization were optimized. The CNC and CNF aerogels could be easily modified by the hydrothermal growth of the amino group, and they exhibited attractive properties in terms of CO2 adsorption, recyclability, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and CO2/CH4 mixture separation. The amino-functionalized CNF aerogel exhibited superior performance to the CNC aerogel, which was attributed to the increased cross-linking binding sites for hydrogen bonding in the CNF aerogel. The results of this study indicated that amino-functionalized nanocellulose aerogels can be considered a promising biodegradable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly material for CO2 capture and removal of CO2 from CH4.

One-pot synthesis of magnetic cellulose nanocrystal and its post-functionalization for doxycycline adsorption

The composite of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is considered a potential adsorbent for water treatment and environmental remediation. In the current study, a one-pot hydrothermal procedure was utilized for magnetic cellulose nanocrystal (MCNC) development from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in the presence of ferric chloride, ferrous chloride, urea, and hydrochloric acid. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of CNC and Fe₃O₄, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis verified their respective sizes (< 400 nm and ≤ 20 nm) in the generated composite. To have an efficient adsorption activity for doxycycline hyclate (DOX), the produced MCNC was post-treated using chloroacetic acid (CAA), chlorosulfonic acid (CSA), or iodobenzene (IB). The introduction of carboxylate, sulfonate, and phenyl groups in the post-treatment was confirmed by FTIR and XPS analysis. Such post treatments decreased the crystallinity index and thermal stability of the samples but improved their DOX adsorption capacity. The adsorption analysis at different pHs revealed the increase in the adsorption capacity by reducing the basicity of the medium due to decreasing electrostatic repulsions and inducing strong attractions.

Flow and assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC): A bottom-up perspective - A review

Cellulosic sources, such as lignocellulose-rich biomass, can be mechanically or acid degraded to produce inclusions called cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). They have several uses in the sectors of biomedicine, photonics, and material engineering because of their biodegradability, renewability, sustainability, and mechanical qualities. The processing and design of CNC-based products are inextricably linked to the rheological behaviour of CNC suspension or in combination with other chemicals, such as surfactants or polymers; in this context, rheology offers a significant link between microstructure and macro scale flow behaviour that is intricately linked to material response in applications. The flow behaviour of CNC items must be properly specified in order to produce goods with value-added characteristics. In this review article, we provide new research on the shear rheology of CNC dispersion and CNC-based hydrogels in the linear and nonlinear regime, with storage modulus values reported to range from ~10^-3 to 10³ Pa. Applications in technology and material science are also covered simultaneously. We carefully examined the effects of charge density, aspect ratio, concentration, persistence length, alignment, liquid crystal formation, the cause of chirality in CNCs, interfacial behaviour and interfacial rheology, linear and nonlinear viscoelasticity of CNC suspension in bulk and at the interface using the currently available literature.

Advanced cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) aerogels: Bottom-up assembly perspective for production of adsorbents

The most common and abundant polymer in nature is the linear polysaccharide cellulose, but processing it requires a new approach since cellulose degrades before melting and does not dissolve in ordinary organic solvents. Cellulose aerogels are exceptionally porous (>90 %), have a high specific surface area, and have low bulk density (0.0085 mg/cm³), making them suitable for a variety of sophisticated applications including but not limited to adsorbents. The production of materials with different qualities from the nanocellulose based aerogels is possible thanks to the ease with which other chemicals may be included into the structure of nanocellulose based aerogels; despite processing challenges, cellulose can nevertheless be formed into useful, value-added products using a variety of traditional and cutting-edge techniques. To improve the adsorption of these aerogels, rheology, 3-D printing, surface modification, employment of metal organic frameworks, freezing temperature, and freeze casting techniques were all investigated and included. In addition to exploring venues for creation of aerogels, their integration with CNC liquid crystal formation were also explored and examined to pursue "smart adsorbent aerogels". The objective of this endeavour is to provide a concise and in-depth evaluation of recent findings about the conception and understanding of nanocellulose aerogel employing a variety of technologies and examination of intricacies involved in enhancing adsorption properties of these aerogels.
