Chitin Nanofiber-Reinforced Waterborne Polyurethane Nanocomposite Films with Enhanced Thermal and Mechanical Performance

Environmentally friendly strategy to access self-healable, reprocessable and recyclable chitin, chitosan, and sodium alginate based polysaccharide-vitrimer hybrid materials

Natural polysaccharides show enviable advantages for preparation of sustainable hybrid materials. However, in most cases, complex chemical modifications of natural polysaccharides are required, which not only causes changes of the inherent properties of polysaccharides, but also increases the manufacturing costs of the final materials. Therefore, it is highly desired to develop efficient and low-cost ways to access polysaccharides-containing hybrid materials. In this work, we report the environmentally friendly preparation of a new kind of polysaccharide-based materials, called polysaccharide-vitrimer hybrid materials, for the first time. The vitrimer synthesis and hybridization with polysaccharides can be achieved via a convenient one-pot method in absence of solvent and catalyst. In addition, time-consuming and labor-intensive physical/chemical modifications of natural polysaccharides are completely avoided. The resultant hybrid materials show good mechanical performance (tensile toughness is up to 13.7 MJ/m³), high thermal stability (T_d,max is up to 457 °C), fast self-healing ability (self-healing efficiency is up to 99 % within 20s at 80 °C) and excellent reprocessability and recyclability (at least three cycles). Especially, conductive polysaccharide-vitrimer hybrid materials could be readily prepared from the resultant materials, exhibiting novel applications as flexible sensors and electromagnetic shielding materials (the EMI SE is up to 24.93 dB).

Polyurethane films formation from microcrystalline cellulose as a polyol and cellulose nanocrystals as additive: Reactions favored by the low viscosity of the source of isocyanate groups used

To simultaneously form films while synthesizing solvent-free and catalyst-free bio-based polyurethanes, hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer was selected as an isocyanate group source to produce a low-viscosity reaction medium for dispersing high contents of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC, polyol) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). Castor oil was used as an additional polyol source. Up to 80 % of the MCC was dispersed, producing a film exhibiting the highest T_g (72 °C), tensile strength (18 MPa), and Young's modulus (522.4 MPa). 12.5 % (30 % MCC) and 7.5 % (50 % MCC) of CNC dispersed in the reaction medium formed films stiffer than their counterparts. All the films exhibited transparency and high crystallinity. The contact angle/zeta potential (ζ) indicated hydrophobic film surfaces. At pH 7.4, ζ suggested that the films interacted with physiological fluids favorably. The films were non-cytotoxic, and the composites exhibited cell growth compared with the control. The reported results, as far as it is known, are unprecedented.

Efficient downstream valorization of lignocellulose after organosolv fractionation: Synergistic enhancement of waterborne coatings by co-assembled lignin@cellulose nanocrystals

The simultaneous downstream valorization of cellulose and lignin is an important aspect of efficiently extracting value from lignocellulose. The present work, we demonstrated the preparation of a novel bio-based filler by the co-assembly of cellulose and lignin obtained from a one-pot ethanosolv lignocellulose fractionation process. The cellulose was valorized by forming cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) through simple bleaching and ultrasonication processes. The lignin fractions demonstrated greater solubility (19.2 mg/mL) and lower molecular weight (6980 g/mol) than conventional industrial lignins. Various lignin@CNCs specimens were prepared via a facile co-assembly of the lignin and CNCs. These entirely bio-based materials could be used as a multifunctional filler to enhance the properties of a waterborne coating (WBC). Specifically, the mechanical properties, coating performance and ultraviolet resistance of a WBC were all significantly improved, demonstrating a synergistic enhancement effect obtained from the CNCs and lignin. In this manner, both cellulose and lignin components were efficiently transformed to value-added fillers for WBC, demonstrating a highly efficient pathway for lignocellulose utilization and downstream value-added applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Biopolyol-Based Waterborne Polyurethane Modified through Complexation with Chitosan

In this study, a series of castor oil-based anionic waterborne polyurethane (CWPU) systems, which it has been suggested may be suitable for use as green elastomers with diverse applications in films and coatings, was prepared by modified with O-carboxymethyl chitosan (CS) as not only a reinforcing filler, but a chain-extender of polyurethane prepolymer to enhance the properties of polyurethanes. Moreover, not only was the system obtained with castor oil-based polyol in the absence of a catalyst, but it was maintained with low viscosity by using acetone instead of toxic methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) during the synthesis process. The sizes, zeta potential, chemical formation, and morphology of the CWPU-CS composites had been investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the results show that the modification allows to enhance storage/loss modulus, tensile properties, thermal stability at high temperature, and biocompatibility of CWPU and CWPU/CS nanocomposites according to various contents of CS.

Preparation and Properties of Self-Healing Waterborne Polyurethane Based on Dynamic Disulfide Bond

A self-healing waterborne polyurethane (WPU) materials containing dynamic disulfide (SS) bond was prepared by introducing SS bond into polymer materials. The zeta potential revealed that all the synthesized WPU emulsions displayed excellent stability, and the particle size of them was about 100 nm. The characteristic peaks of N-H and S-S in urethane were verified by FTIR, and the chemical environment of all elements were confirmed by the XPS test. Furthermore, the tensile strength, self-healing process and self-healing efficiency of the materials were quantitatively evaluated by tensile measurements. The results showed that the self-healing efficiency could reach 96.14% when the sample was heat treated at 70 °C for 4 h. In addition, the material also showed a good reprocessing performance, and the tensile strength of the reprocessed film was 3.39 MPa.
