Improving hydraulic permeability, mechanical properties, and chemical functionality of cellulose acetate-based membranes by co-polymerization with tetraethyl orthosilicate and 3-(aminopropyl)triethoxysilane

Ibuprofen-Immobilized Thin Films: A Novel Approach to Improve the Clearance of Protein-Bound Uremic Toxins

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), a pressing global health issue, affects millions and leads to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Hemodialysis (HD) is a crucial treatment for ESRD, yet its limited efficiency in removing protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) results in high morbidity and mortality rates. A high affinity of pharmaceutical drugs for human serum albumin (HSA) can be leveraged to compete effectively with PBUTs for the same HSA binding sites, thereby enabling them to be capable of displacing these toxins. One such drug is ibuprofen (IBF), known for its very high affinity for HSA and sharing the same binding site as indoxyl sulfate (IS). This study explores the development of IBF-immobilized cellulose acetate-based (CA-based) thin films. The films were created by reacting CA with IBF-modified silica precursors at varying concentrations. The presence of IBF in CA/TEOS/APTES-IBF-3 and CA/TEOS-IBF-25 films, containing 3 and 25 wt % IBF, respectively, was confirmed through 1H NMR spectra. Competitive displacement binding assays indicated that while the incorporation of 3 wt % IBF showed no significant enhancement in IS displacement, the 25 wt % IBF film increased the dialyzed IS by 1.3 when normalized to non-IBF films. Furthermore, there was a 1.2-fold decrease in the total percentage of IS, and the free percentage of IS increased 1.3 to 3.0 times. Although direct systemic infusion of IBF in HD patients achieves a 2.4 times higher removal of IS, it is impractical due to the risks it poses to ESRD patients. The IBF-immobilized films offer the advantage of localized binding, thus eliminating the need for systemic exposure. This innovative approach lays a foundation for developing more efficient HD membranes, aiming to address the challenging issue of PBUT elimination and potentially enhance the quality of life and treatment outcomes for ESRD patients.

The potential application of cellulose acetate membrane for CO2 adsorbent

Numerous countries have deployed significant efforts to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. Carbon capture and storage is widely regarded as a mitigation technique that can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. A crucial stage in carbon capture and storage is CO2 adsorption using a membrane. Cellulose acetate has demonstrated excellent properties as a membrane material. In this study, we examined the potential of cellulose acetate membrane (CAM) for CO2 gas capture. Two forms of CAM were developed for this study, with and without the addition of glycerol. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and CO2 adsorption analyses were used to characterise CAM in numerous ways. The analysis revealed that the addition of glycerol improved the gas adsorption properties of the material. The incorporation of glycerol into the cellulose acetate matrix resulted in an observed augmentation in both the diameter and pore size. The adsorption properties of CO2 are significantly influenced by the microscopic structure of the cellulose acetate membrane. The CAM can be viewed as a possible material for CO2 adsorbers.

Improving Structural Homogeneity, Hydraulic Permeability, and Mechanical Performance of Asymmetric Monophasic Cellulose Acetate/Silica Membranes: Spinodal Decomposition Mix

In this paper, we propose an optimized protocol to synthesize reproducible, accurate, sustainable integrally skinned monophasic hybrid cellulose acetate/silica membranes for ultrafiltration. Eight different membrane compositions were studied, divided into two series, one and two, each composed of four membranes. The amount of silica increased from 0 wt.% up to 30 wt.% (with increments of 10 wt.%) in each series, while the solvent composition was kept constant within each series (formamide/acetone ratio equals 0.57 wt.% in series one and 0.73 wt.% in series two). The morphology of the membranes was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and the chemical composition by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, in attenuated total reflection mode (FTIR-ATR). Mechanical tensile properties were determined using tensile tests, and a retest trial was performed to assess mechanical properties variability over different membrane batches. The hydraulic permeability of the membranes was evaluated by measuring pure water fluxes following membrane compaction. The membranes in series two produced with a higher formamide/acetone solvent ratio led to thicker membranes with higher hydraulic permeability values (47.2-26.39 kg·h^-1·m^-2·bar^-1) than for the membranes in series one (40.01-19.4 kg·h^-1·m^-2·bar^-1). Results obtained from the FTIR-ATR spectra suggest the presence of micro/nano-silica clusters in the hybrid membranes of series one, also exhibiting higher Young's modulus values than the hybrid membranes in series two.

A Novel Strategy for Enhanced Sequestration of Protein-Bound Uremic Toxins Using Smart Hybrid Membranes

Currently available hemodialysis (HD) membranes are unable to safely remove protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs), especially those bonded to human serum albumin (HSA). To overcome this issue, the prior administration of high doses of HSA competitive binders, such as ibuprofen (IBF), has been proposed as a complementary clinical protocol to increase HD efficiency. In this work, we designed and prepared novel hybrid membranes conjugated with IBF, thus avoiding its administration to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Two novel silicon precursors containing IBF were synthesized and, by the combination of a sol-gel reaction and the phase inversion technique, four monophasic hybrid integral asymmetric cellulose acetate/silica/IBF membranes in which silicon precursors are covalently bonded to the cellulose acetate polymer were produced. To prove IBF incorporation, methyl red dye was used as a model, thus allowing simple visual color control of the membrane fabrication and stability. These smart membranes may display a competitive behavior towards HSA, allowing the local displacement of PBUTs in future hemodialyzers.

Adsorption- and Displacement-Based Approaches for the Removal of Protein-Bound Uremic Toxins

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients rely on renal replacement therapies to survive. Hemodialysis (HD), the most widely applied treatment, is responsible for the removal of excess fluid and uremic toxins (UTs) from blood, particularly those with low molecular weight (MW < 500 Da). The development of high-flux membranes and more efficient treatment modes, such as hemodiafiltration, have resulted in improved removal rates of UTs in the middle molecular weight range. However, the concentrations of protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) remain essentially untouched. Due to the high binding affinity to large proteins, such as albumin, PBUTs form large complexes (MW > 66 kDa) which are not removed during HD and their accumulation has been strongly associated with the increased morbidity and mortality of patients with ESRD. In this review, we describe adsorption- and displacement-based approaches currently being studied to enhance the removal of PBUTs. The development of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with selective adsorption properties, infusion of compounds capable of displacing UTs from their binding site on albumin, and competitive binding membranes show promising results, but the road to clinical application is still long, and further investigation is required.

Novel Magnetic Mixed Cellulose Acetate Matrix Membranes with Oxygen-Enrichment Potential

This work presents novel magnetic mixed cellulose-based matrix membranes that combine the advantages of a low-cost common polymer matrix, such as cellulose acetate (CA), and a low-cost magnetic filler. Moreover, the presented magnetic mixed CA matrix membranes were fabricated and used without applying an external magnetic field during either the membrane casting or the separating process. Poly(methylmethacrylate) and lithium chloride were used in order to improve the mechanical properties and porosity of the fabricated membranes. The iron-nickel magnetic alloys used were prepared through a simple chemical reduction method with unique morphologies (Fe₁₀Ni₉₀-starfish-like and Fe₂₀Ni₈₀-necklace-like). The novel magnetic mixed CA matrix membranes fabricated were characterized using different analysis techniques, including SEM, EDX, XRD, TGA, and FTIR-ATR analyses. Furthermore, the static water contact angle, membrane thickness, surface roughness, tensile strength, and membrane porosity (using ethanol and water) were determined. In addition, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis was conducted and the oxygen transition rate (OTR) was studied. The magnetic mixed CA matrix membrane containing starfish-like Fe₁₀Ni₉₀ alloy was characterized by high coercivity (109 Oe) and an efficient 1.271 × 10^-5 cm³/(m²·s) OTR compared to the blank CA membrane with 19.8 Oe coercivity and no OTR. The effects of the polymeric matrix composition, viscosity, and compatibility with the alloys/fillers used on the structure and performance of the fabricated mixed CA matrix membranes compared to the previously used poly(ethersufone) polymeric matrix are discussed and highlighted. The novel magnetic mixed CA matrix membranes presented have good potential for use in the oxygen-enrichment process.

Cellulose acetate based sustainable nanostructured membranes for environmental remediation

Membrane-based gas separation has a great potential for reducing environmentally hazardous carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas. The polymeric membranes developed for CO₂ capturing have some limitations in their selectivity and permeability. There is a need to overcome these issues and developed such membranes having high-performance CO₂ capture with cost-effectiveness. The present study aimed to synthesize mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) having improved properties CO₂ adsorption performance and stability than that of pure polymer. Further, the effect on CO₂ adsorption by increasing the filler concentration in MMMs was investigated. The MMMs were synthesized by incorporating (1-5 wt%) Cu-MOF-GO composites as filler into cellulose-acetate (CA) polymer matrix by adopting the solution casting method. The performance of MMMs was studied by changing the Cu-MOF-GO composite concentration (1-5 wt%) in the polymer matrix at 45 °C up to 15 bar. Morphological analysis by using SEM confirms that by increasing the concentration of Cu-MOF-GO more than 3% will result in their agglomeration in MMM. The successful incorporation of MOF within the polymer matrix of MMMs was confirmed through the presence of functional groups using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. XRD analysis revealed that pure CA changes its semi-crystalline behaviour into crystalline by the addition of Cu-MOF-GO. The maximum tensile stress and strain rate of MMMs was 45.1 N/mm² and 12.8%. In addition, with an increase in (4-5 wt%) Cu-MOF-GO concentration the hydrophilicity of MMMs decreases. The maximum uptake rate of CO₂ was 1.79 mmol/g and 7.98 wt% at 15 bar. The adsorption results conclude that Cu-MOF-GO composite and CA-based MMM can be effective for CO₂ capture.

Development and characterization of biodegradable ultraviolet protective and antibacterial polylactic acid-cellulose acetate film modified by phenyl salicylate

The polylactic acid composite films were successfully fabricated via the technique of solvent casting using cellulose acetate (20%, wt) as the reinforcing material and phenyl salicylate as the ultraviolet (UV) absorbent and antibacterial agent. Polylactic acid-cellulose acetate-phenyl salicylate composite films displayed complete absorption effect at the region of UV-C (280-100 nm) and UV-B (315-280 nm), and more than 95% UV absorption effect at the region of UV-A (400-315 nm). These results indicate that the UV shielding performance of the composite films could be significantly improve by addition of phenyl salicylate. Moreover, the addition of 20% phenyl salicylate could improve the steam resistance, mechanical properties and thermal stability of the films, and the composite films had also better antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. The composite films could reduce the decay rate of fresh lilies and extend their storage time. The degradation characteristics of the films were explored in the natural environment and the laboratory level, which provided application prospect for the development of degradable food packaging materials with anti-ultraviolet and anti-bacteria effect.

Interaction of Human Serum Albumin with Uremic Toxins: The Need of New Strategies Aiming at Uremic Toxins Removal

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is acknowledged worldwide to be a grave threat to public health, with the number of US end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients increasing steeply from 10,000 in 1973 to 703,243 in 2015. Protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) are excreted by renal tubular secretion in healthy humans, but hardly removed by traditional haemodialysis (HD) in ESKD patients. The accumulation of these toxins is a major contributor to these sufferers’ morbidity and mortality. As a result, some improvements to dialytic removal have been proposed, each with their own upsides and drawbacks. Longer dialysis sessions and hemodiafiltration, though, have not performed especially well, while larger dialyzers, coupled with a higher dialysate flow, proved to have some efficiency in indoxyl sulfate (IS) clearance, but with reduced impact on patients’ quality of life. More efficient in removing PBUTs was fractionated plasma separation and adsorption, but the risk of occlusive thrombosis was worryingly high. A promising technique for the removal of PBUTs is binding competition, which holds great hopes for future HD. This short review starts by presenting the PBUTs chemistry with emphasis on the chemical interactions with the transport protein, human serum albumin (HSA). Recent membrane-based strategies targeting PBUTs removal are also presented, and their efficiency is discussed.

Study on the Preparation of Cellulose Acetate Separation Membrane and New Adjusting Method of Pore Size

As a kind of eco-friendly (biodegradable) material and with a natural anti-fouling ability, cellulose acetate (CA) is more suitable for single-use membrane (especially in bioprocess). In this study, the method for preparing CA membrane by Vapor-assisted Nonsolvent Induced Phase Separation (VNIPS) was studied. The influences of ratio compositions (solid content, acetone/N,N-Dimethylacetamide ratio, glycerol/CA ratio) and membrane preparation conditions (evaporation time, evaporation temperature and humidity) on the microstructure and other properties were systematically evaluated. Results indicated that acetone/N,N-Dimethylacetamide ratio and glycerol/CA ratio had great influence on the cross-section structure of membranes. Additionally, the membrane with homogeneous sponge-like porous structure could be prepared stably within certain limits of ratios. Under the premise of keeping the content of other components fixed, the separation membrane with a full sponge pore structure can be obtained when the ratio of glycerol/CA is ≥2.5 or the acetone/solvent ratio is between 0.25 and 0.5. Evaporation time and temperature, humidity and other membrane preparation conditions mainly affected the surface morphology and the pore size. This kind of high-performance membrane with homogeneous sponge-like pore and controllable surface morphology could be potentially used for bioseparation processes.

Novel Cellulose Acetate-Based Monophasic Hybrid Membranes for Improved Blood Purification Devices: Characterization under Dynamic Conditions

A novel cellulose acetate-based monophasic hybrid skinned amine-functionalized CA-SiO2-(CH2)3NH2 membrane was synthesized using an innovative method which combines the phase inversion and sol-gel techniques. Morphological characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the chemical composition was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection mode (ATR-FTIR). The characterization of the monophasic hybrid CA-SiO2-(CH2)3NH2 membrane in terms of permeation properties was carried out in an in-house-built single hemodialysis membrane module (SHDMM) under dynamic conditions. Permeation experiments were performed to determine the hydraulic permeability (Lp), molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) and the rejection coefficients to urea, creatinine, uric acid, and albumin. SEM confirmed the existence of a very thin (<1 µm) top dense layer and a much thicker bottom porous surface, and ATR-FTIR showed the main bands belonging to the CA-based membranes. Permeation studies revealed that the Lp and MWCO of the CA-SiO2-(CH2)3NH2 membrane were 66.61 kg·h-1·m-2·bar-1 and 24.5 kDa, respectively, and that the Lp was 1.8 times higher compared to a pure CA membrane. Furthermore, the CA-SiO2-(CH2)3NH2 membrane fully permeated urea, creatinine, and uric acid while completely retaining albumin. Long-term filtration studies of albumin solutions indicated that fouling does not occur at the surface of the CA-SiO2-(CH2)3NH2 membrane.

Cigarette Butt Waste as Material for Phase Inverted Membrane Fabrication Used for Oil/Water Emulsion Separation

The increasing rate of oil and gas production has contributed to a release of oil/water emulsion or mixtures to the environment, becoming a pressing issue. At the same time, pollution of the toxic cigarette butt has also become a growing concern. This study explored utilization of cigarette butt waste as a source of cellulose acetate-based (CA) polymer to develop a phase inverted membrane for treatment of oil/water emulsion and compare it with commercial polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and polysulfone (PSF). Results show that the CA-based membrane from waste cigarette butt offers an eco-friendly material without compromising the separation efficiency, with a pore size range suitable for oil/water emulsion filtration with the rejection of >94.0%. The CA membrane poses good structural property similar to the established PVDF and PSF membranes with equally asymmetric morphology. It also poses hydrophilicity properties with a contact angle of 74.5°, lower than both PVDF and PSF membranes. The pore size of CA demonstrates that the CA is within the microfiltration range with a mean flow pore size of 0.17 µm. The developed CA membrane shows a promising oil/water emulsion permeability of 180 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1 after five filtration cycles. However, it still suffers a high degree of irreversible fouling (>90.0%), suggesting potential future improvements in terms of membrane fouling management. Overall, this study demonstrates a sustainable approach to addressing oil/water emulsion pollution treated CA membrane from cigarette butt waste.

What Is Driving the Growth of Inorganic Glass in Smart Materials and Opto-Electronic Devices?

Inorganic glass is a transparent functional material and one of the few materials that keeps leading innovation. In the last decades, inorganic glass was integrated into opto-electronic devices such as optical fibers, semiconductors, solar cells, transparent photovoltaic devices, or photonic crystals and in smart materials applications such as environmental, pharmaceutical, and medical sensors, reinforcing its influence as an essential material and providing potential growth opportunities for the market. Moreover, inorganic glass is the only material that is 100% recyclable and can incorporate other industrial offscourings and/or residues to be used as raw materials. Over time, inorganic glass experienced an extensive range of fabrication techniques, from traditional melting-quenching (with an immense diversity of protocols) to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), and wet chemistry routes as sol-gel and solvothermal processes. Additive manufacturing (AM) was recently added to the list. Bulks (3D), thin/thick films (2D), flexible glass (2D), powders (2D), fibers (1D), and nanoparticles (NPs) (0D) are examples of possible inorganic glass architectures able to integrate smart materials and opto-electronic devices, leading to added-value products in a wide range of markets. In this review, selected examples of inorganic glasses in areas such as: (i) magnetic glass materials, (ii) solar cells and transparent photovoltaic devices, (iii) photonic crystal, and (iv) smart materials are presented and discussed.
