Introducing hydroxyl groups as cellulose-binding sites into polymeric solid acids to improve their catalytic performance in hydrolyzing cellulose

Cellulase-responsive hydroxypropyl cellulose-anchored hollow mesoporous silica carriers for pesticide delivery

In this study, a cellulase-responsive controlled-release formulation (FPR-HMS-HPC) was developed by grafting hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) onto fipronil (FPR) loaded hollow mesoporous silica (HMS) nanoparticles via ester linkage. The FPR-HMS-HPC formulation was characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicated that FPR-HMS-HPC exhibited a high loading capacity of 10.0 % (w/w) and demonstrated favorable responsiveness to cellulase enzyme. Moreover, its insecticidal efficacy against Reticulitermes flaviceps surpassed that of an equivalent dose of FPR. Toxicology studies showed that the mortality and hatching rates of zebrafish exposed to FPR-HMS-HPC nanoparticles were reduced by >6.5 and 8.0 times, respectively. Thus, HPC-anchored HMS nanoparticles as insecticide delivery systems present a sustainable method for pest control significantly reducing harm to non-target organisms and the environment.

Bioresource Upgrade for Sustainable Energy, Environment, and Biomedicine

We conceptualize bioresource upgrade for sustainable energy, environment, and biomedicine with a focus on circular economy, sustainability, and carbon neutrality using high availability and low utilization biomass (HALUB). We acme energy-efficient technologies for sustainable energy and material recovery and applications. The technologies of thermochemical conversion (TC), biochemical conversion (BC), electrochemical conversion (EC), and photochemical conversion (PTC) are summarized for HALUB. Microalgal biomass could contribute to a biofuel HHV of 35.72 MJ Kg-1 and total benefit of 749 $/ton biomass via TC. Specific surface area of biochar reached 3000 m2 g-1 via pyrolytic carbonization of waste bean dregs. Lignocellulosic biomass can be effectively converted into bio-stimulants and biofertilizers via BC with a high conversion efficiency of more than 90%. Besides, lignocellulosic biomass can contribute to a current density of 672 mA m-2 via EC. Bioresource can be 100% selectively synthesized via electrocatalysis through EC and PTC. Machine learning, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle analysis are essential to various upgrading approaches of HALUB. Sustainable biomaterials, sustainable living materials and technologies for biomedical and multifunctional applications like nano-catalysis, microfluidic and micro/nanomotors beyond are also highlighted. New techniques and systems for the complete conversion and utilization of HALUB for new energy and materials are further discussed.

The Impact of Isocyanate Index and Filler Functionalities on the Performance of Flexible Foamed Polyurethane/Ground Tire Rubber Composites

The structure and performance of polyurethane (PU) foams are strongly driven by the stoichiometry of the polyaddition reaction, quantitatively described by the isocyanate index. It determines the balance between isocyanate and hydroxyl groups in the reacting system and is affected by the introduction of additional functionalities originated, e.g., from applied fillers. Nevertheless, this issue is hardly taken into account in research works. Herein, the structure and performance of PU/ground tire rubber (GTR) composites differing in their isocyanate index (from 0.8 to 1.2) and prepared with and without considering the GTR functionalities in formulation development were investigated. Incorporating GTR into the PU matrix led to a reduction in average cell diameter (from 2 to 30% depending on the isocyanate index) compared to unfilled foams. However, formulation adjustments did not show a significant impact on cellular structure. The only decrease in open cell content was noted, from 10% for the 0.9 index to 40% for 1.2. Such changes were related to the increasing strength of the PU cellular structure able to maintain inside the increasing amount of carbon dioxide. On the other hand, considering hydroxyl values of GTR noticeably affected the thermomechanical performance of composites. The shift of glass transition temperature (T_g), even by 10 °C for 1.2 isocyanate index, enhanced the performance of materials, which was expressed in an 8-62% drop in the composite performance factor, pointing to the enhanced reinforcing effect resulting from filler incorporation. The stiffening of foams, related to the variations in PU segmental structure, also caused minor changes in the course of thermal degradation of PU/GTR composites due to the inferior thermal stability of hard segments. The obtained results provide important insights into the development of formulations of PU composites filled with materials containing reactive functional groups able to disrupt the stoichiometric balance of the polyaddition reaction.

Bioinspired Cellulase-Mimetic Solid Acid Catalysts for Cellulose Hydrolysis

Glucose produced by catalytic hydrolysis of cellulose is an important platform molecule for producing a variety of potential biobased fuels and chemicals. Catalysts such as mineral acids and enzymes have been intensively studied for cellulose hydrolysis. However, mineral acids show serious limitations concerning equipment corrosion, wastewater treatment and recyclability while enzymes have the issues such as high cost and thermal stability. Alternatively, solid acid catalysts are receiving increasing attention due to their high potential to overcome the limitations caused by conventional mineral acid catalysts but the slow mass transfer between the solid acid catalysts and cellulose as well as the absence of ideal binding sites on the surface of the solid acid catalysts are the key barriers to efficient cellulose hydrolysis. To bridge the gap, bio-inspired or bio-mimetic solid acid catalysts bearing both catalytic and binding sites are considered futuristic materials that possess added advantages over conventional solid catalysts, given their better substrate adsorption, high-temperature stability and easy recyclability. In this review, cellulase-mimetic solid acid catalysts featuring intrinsic structural characteristics such as binding and catalytic domains of cellulase are reviewed. The mechanism of cellulase-catalyzed cellulose hydrolysis, design of cellulase-mimetic catalysts, and the issues related to these cellulase-mimetic catalysts are critically discussed. Some potential research directions for designing more efficient catalysts for cellulose hydrolysis are proposed. We expect that this review can provide insights into the design and preparation of efficient bioinspired cellulase-mimetic catalysts for cellulose hydrolysis.
