Abstract
The development of flexible wearable multifunctional electronics has gained great attention in the field of human motion monitoring. However, developing mechanically tough, highly stretchable, and recyclable composite conductive materials for application in multifunctional sensors remained great challenges. In this work, a mechanically tough, highly stretchable, and recyclable composite conductive elastomer with the dynamic physical-chemical dual-crosslinking network was fabricated by the combination of multiple hydrogen bonds and dynamic ester bonds. To prepare the proposed composite elastomers, the polyaniline-modified carboxylate cellulose nanocrystals (C-CNC@PANI) were used as both conductive filler to yield high conductivity of 15.08 mS/m, and mechanical reinforcement to construct the dynamic dual-crosslinking network with epoxidized natural rubber latex to realize the high mechanical strength (8.65 MPa) and toughness (29.57 MJ/m3). Meanwhile, the construction of dynamic dual-crosslinking network endowed the elastomer with satisfactory recyclability. Based on these features, the composite conductive elastomers were used as strain sensors, and electrode material for assembling flexible and recyclable self-powered sensors for monitoring human motions. Importantly, the composite conductive elastomers maintained reliable sensing and energy harvesting performance even after multiple recycling process. This study provides a new strategy for the preparation of recyclable, mechanically tough composite conductive materials for wearable sensors.

Abstract
A cellulose-reinforced eutectogel was constructed by deep eutectic solvent (DES) and cotton linter cellulose. Cellulose was dispersed in the ternary DES consisting of acrylic acid, choline chloride and AlCl3·6H2O. The photoinitiator was then introduced into the system to in situ polymerize acrylic acid monomer to form transparent and ionic conductive eutectogels while keeping all the DES. The crosslinks formed by Al3+ induced ionic bonds and reversible links formed by hydrogen bonds give the eutectogels high stretchability (3200 ± 200 % tensile strain), self-adhesive (52.1 kPa to glass), self-healing and good mechanical strength (670 kPa). The eutectogels were assembled into sensors and epidermal patch electrodes that demonstrated high quality human motion sensing and physiological signal detection (electrocardiogram and electromyography). This work provides a facile way to design flexible electronics for sensing.

Abstract
A kind of ionic conductive gel (also named eutectogel) is developed from an inorganic salt (ZnCl2)-based deep eutectic solvent (DES). The ternary DES consists of ZnCl2, acrylic acid, and water, and cotton linter cellulose is introduced into the DES system to tailor its mechanical and conductive properties. Enabled by the extensive hydrogen bonds and ion-dipole interactions, the obtained eutectogel displays superior ionic conductivity (0.33 S/m), high stretchability (up to 2050%), large tensile strength (1.82 MPa), and wide temperature tolerance (-40 to 60 °C). In particular, the water-induced coordination interactions can tune the strength of hydrogen/ionic bonds in the eutectogels, imparting them with appealing humidity sensing ability in complex and extreme conditions.

Insight into the Feasibility of Fatty Acyl Chlorides with 10-18 Carbons for the Ball-Milling Synthesis of Thermoplastic Cellulose Esters. Biomacromolecules 2024; 25:1923-1932. Abstract
Fatty acid cellulose esters (FACE) are common cellulose-based thermoplastics, and their thermoplasticity is determined by both the contents and the lengths of the side chains. Herein, various FACE were synthesized by the ball-milling esterification of cellulose and fatty acyl chlorides containing 10-18 carbons, and their structures and thermoplasticity were thoroughly studied. The results showed that FACE with high degrees of substitution (DS) and low melting flow temperatures (Tf) were achieved as the chain lengths of the fatty acyl chlorides were reduced. In particular, a cellulose decanoate with a DS of 1.85 and a Tf of 186 °C was achieved by feeding 3 mol of decanoyl chloride per mole anhydroglucose units of cellulose. However, cellulose stearate (DS = 1.53) synthesized by the same protocols cannot melt even at 250 °C. More interestingly, the fatty acyl chlorides with 10 and 12 carbons resulted in FACE with superior toughness (elongation at break up to 94.4%). In contrast, due to their potential crystallization of the fatty acyl groups with 14-18 carbons, the corresponding FACE showed higher tensile strength and Young's modulus than the others. This study provides some theoretical basis for the mechanochemical synthesis of thermoplastic FACE with designated properties.

Abstract
Near-infrared (NIR) transparent optical filters show great promise in night vision and receiving windows. However, NIR optical filters are generally prepared by laborious, environmentally unfriendly processes that involve metal oxides or petroleum-based polymers. We propose a lignin capturing-fusing approach to manufacturing optical biofilters based on molecular collaboration between lignin and cellulose from waste agricultural biomass. In this process, lignin is captured via self-assembly in a cellulose network; then, the lignin is fused to fill gaps and hold the cellulose fibers tightly. The resulting optical biofilter featured a dense structure and smooth surface with NIR transmittance of ~90%, ultralow haze of close to 0%, strong ultraviolet-visible light blocking (~100% at 400 nm and 57.58% to 98.59% at 550 nm). Further, the optical biofilter has comprehensive stability, including water stability, solvent stability, thermal stability, and environmental stability. Because of its unique properties, the optical biofilter demonstrates potential applications in the NIR region, such as an NIR-transmitting window, NIR night vision, and privacy protection. These applications represent a promising route to produce NIR transparent optical filters starting from lignocellulose biomass waste.

Abstract
Sustainable food packaging is a necessary element to ensure the success of a food system, the accomplishment of which is weighed in terms of quality retention and ensured products safety. Irrespective of the raised environmental concerns regarding petroleum-based packaging materials, a sustainable analysis and a lab to land assessment should be a priority to eliminate similar fates of new material. Functionalized bio-based hydrogels are one of the smartest packaging inventions that are expected to revolutionize the food packaging industry. Although in this review, the focus relies on recent developments in the sustainable bio-based hydrogel packaging materials, natural biopolymers such as proteins and polysaccharides from which hydrogels could be obtained, the challenges encountered in hydrogel-based packaging materials and the future prospects of hydrogel-based food packaging materials are also discussed. Moreover, the need for 'Life Cycle Assessment' (LCA), stress on certifications and a sustainable waste management system is also suggested which can bring both food and packaging into the same recycling bins.

Abstract
This review summarizes the recent advances in preparing cellulose hydrogels via ionic liquid-based processes and the applications of regenerated cellulose hydrogels/iongels in electrochemical materials, separation membranes, and 3D printing bioinks. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer, which has attracted great attention due to the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable materials. The sustainability of cellulose products also depends on the selection of the dissolution solvent. The current state of knowledge in cellulose preparation, performed by directly dissolving in ionic liquids and then regenerating in antisolvents, as described in this review, provides innovative ideas from the new findings presented in recent research papers and with the perspective of the current challenges.

Abstract
The delicate design of photocatalyst monoliths is of great significance for the practical applications of artificial photocatalysis. An in-situ synthesis to prepare ZnIn2S4/cellulose foam was developed. Cellulose is dispersed in a highly concentrated ZnCl2 aqueous solution to prepare Zn2+/cellulose foam. Zn2+ ions are pre-anchored by hydrogen bonds on cellulose and become in-situ sites for synthesizing ultra-thin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets. This synthesis method makes ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and cellulose tightly bound and prevents ZnIn2S4 nanosheets from stacking in multiple layers. As a proof of concept, the prepared ZnIn2S4/cellulose foam exhibits a favorable performance for photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light. By adjusting the concentration of zinc ions, the optimal ZnIn2S4/cellulose foam is capable to completely reduce Cr(VI) in 2 h and the photocatalytic activities show no decrease after 4 cycles. This work could inspire people to build floating cellulose-based photocatalysts via in-situ synthesis.

Abstract
Cellulose-based ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) have found extensive applications in flexible electronics and multifunctional sensors. However, simultaneous realization of sufficient conductivity, superior mechanical property and extreme environment tolerance for ICHs remains to be a huge challenge. In this work, a facile one-pot approach was developed to fabricate ICHs by directly dissolving cotton linter cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in a concentrated ZnCl2 solution. By regulating the content of PVA in ICHs, the optimal hydrogel (Gel-5) exhibits a tensile strength of 0.30 MPa, a compressive strength of 2.05 MPa and a conductivity of 8.16 S m-1. Moreover, the resulting dual-network ICHs present high transparency, good thermal reversibility and desirable ionic conductivity. Due to the high concentration of inorganic salts in the porous dual-network structure, the ICH presents good anti-drying and anti-freezing (as low as -90 °C) properties. Such hydrogel can be assembled into multi-functional sensors for human motion and temperature monitoring, and they demonstrate durable sensitivity, cycling stability in a wide operating temperature. This work will shed light on the design of cellulose-based hydrogels with good ionic conductivity and mechanical performance under extreme conditions.

Abstract
Cellulose-based functional gels have received considerable attention because of their good mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and low cost. However, the preparation of cellulose gels with self-adhesion, mechanical robustness, ionic conductivity, anti-freezing ability, and environmental stability remains a challenge. Here, gallic acid esterified microcrystalline cellulose (MCC-GA) was obtained by grafting gallic acid (GA) onto the macromolecular chains of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) through a one-step esterification method. Then the prepared MCC-GA was dissolved in Lithium chloride/dimethyl sulfoxide (LiCl/DMSO) system and polymerized with acrylic acid (AA) to prepare a multi-functional cellulose-based organogel. The prepared MCC-GA/polyacrylic acid (PAA) organogels exhibited enhanced interfacial adhesion through hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, and electrostatic interactions. Additionally, the MCC-GA/PAA organogels could withstand 95 % of the compressive deformation and rapidly self-recover owing to chemical cross-linking and dynamic non-covalent interactions. The organogels also exhibited excellent anti-freezing properties (up to -80 °C), solvent retention, and ionic conductivity. Considering its excellent overall performance, the MCC-GA/PAA organogel was used as an effective flexible sensor for human motion detection and is expected to play an important role in the future development of flexible bioelectronics.

Abstract
Hydrogels based on the supramolecular host-guest concept can be prepared if at least one constituent is a polymer chain modified with supramolecular host or guest (or both) units. Low-molecular-weight multitopic counterparts can also be used, however, guest molecules in the role of cross-linking agents are seldom reported, although such an approach offers wide-ranging possibilities for tuning the system properties via easily achievable structural modifications. In this paper, a series of adamantane-based star-like guest molecules was used for cross-linking of two types of β-cyclodextrin-modified hyaluronan (CD-HA). The prepared 3D supramolecular networks were characterised using nuclear magnetic resonance, titration calorimetry and rheological measurements to confirm the formation of the host-guest complexes between adamantane moieties and β-cyclodextrin units, including their typical properties such as self-healing and dynamic nature. The results indicate that the nature of the cross-linker (amides versus esters) has a greater impact on mechanical properties than the length of the guest's arms. In addition, the results show that the length of the HA polymer chain is more important than the degree of modification with supramolecular units. In conclusion, it was proven that the modular concept employing low-molecular-weight cross-linking guests is valuable for the formulation of supramolecular networks, including hydrogels.

Abstract
Ionic conducting hydrogels (ICHs) are emerging materials for multi-functional sensors in the fields of healthcare monitoring and flexible electronics. However, there is a long-standing dilemma between ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of the ICHs. In this work, ionic conductive, flexible, transparent, and anti-freezing hydrogels are fabricated by dissolving cotton linter pulp in ZnCl2/CaCl2 solution and cross-linking with epichlorohydrin (ECH). The presence of inorganic salt imparts the hydrogel with high ionic conductivity and low-temperature tolerance. While the introduction of ECH as the second network gives the hydrogel with desirable mechanical performance. By tailoring the ECH addition, the tensile strength, compressive strength, elongation at break, and conductivity of the hydrogel could reach 0.82 MPa, 2.80 MPa, 260 %, and 5.48 S m-1, respectively. The prepared ICHs are fabricated into sensors for detecting full-range human body motions, and they demonstrate fast response and durable sensitivity to both tensile strain and compressive deformation. Moreover, flexible sensors can work at subzero temperatures. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of cellulose-based hydrogels with good ionic conductivity and mechanical properties under extreme conditions.

Abstract
Lignin-containing cellulose nanopapers are emerging multifunctional materials in the fields of coatings, films, and packaging. However, the forming mechanism and properties of nanopapers with various lignin content have not been thoroughly studied. In this work, a mechanically strong nanopaper was fabricated based on lignin-containing cellulose micro- and nano-hybrid fibrils (LCNFs). The influence of lignin content and fibrils morphology on the formation process of nanopapers was investigated to understand the strengthening mechanism of nanopapers. LCNFs with high lignin content provided nanopapers with intertwined micro- and nano-hybrid fibrils layers with small layer spacing, while LCNFs with low lignin content offered nanopapers interlaced nanofibrils layers with large layer spacing. Although lignin was expected to interfere with hydrogen bonds between fibrils, the uniformly distributed lignin contributed to the stress transfer between fibrils. Due to the good coordination between microfibrils, nanofibrils and lignin (as network skeleton, filler and natural binder, respectively), the well-designed LCNFs nanopapers with lignin content of 14.5 % showed excellent mechanical properties, including tensile strength (183.8 MPa), Young's modulus (5.6 GPa) and elongation (9.2 %). This work deeply reveals the relationship between lignin content, morphology and strengthening mechanism of nanopapers, and providing theoretical guidance for employing LCNFs as structural and reinforcing materials to design robust composites.

Abstract
In this study, a heat-resistant and high-wettability lithium-ion batteries separator (PI-CPM-PI) composed of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and aramid fibers (PMIA chopped fiber/PPTA pulp) with the reinforced concrete structure was fabricated via a traditional heterogeneous paper-making process. CNF played crucial roles in optimizing the pore structure and improving the wettability of PI-CPM-PI separator. The effects of composition on separator properties were investigated and the results indicated that the optimal compositions were 0.5 wt% CNF, 0.5 wt% PMIA chopped fiber/PPTA pulp (ratio of 5:5), 0.05 wt% diatomite and 1.5 wt% polyimide. Relevant tests demonstrated that the performance advantages of PI-CPM-PI separators were exhibited at the wettability and thermal stability compared to the commercial separator (PP). Additionally, batteries assembled with PI-CPM-PI separators showed excellent electrochemical and cycling performance (ionic conductivity of 1.041 mS.cm-1, the first discharge capacity of 158.2 mAh.g-1 at 0.2C and capacity retention ratio of 99.76 % after 100 cycles).

Abstract
A great paradigm for foremost food packaging is to use renewable and biodegradable lignocellulose−based materials instead of plastic. Novel packages were successfully prepared from the cellulose paper by coating a mixture of polylactic acid (PLA) with cinnamaldehyde (CIN) as a barrier screen and nano silica−modified stearic acid (SA/SiO2) as a superhydrophobic layer. As comprehensively investigated by various tests, results showed that the as−prepared packages possessed excellent thermal stability attributed to inorganic SiO2 incorporation. The excellent film−forming characteristics of PLA improved the tensile strength of the manufactured papers (104.3 MPa) as compared to the original cellulose papers (70.50 MPa), enhanced by 47.94%. Benefiting from the rough nanostructure which was surface−modified by low surface energy SA, the contact angle of the composite papers attained 156.3°, owning superhydrophobic performance for various liquids. Moreover, the composite papers showed excellent gas, moisture, and oil bacteria barrier property as a result of the reinforcement by the functional coatings. The Cobb300s and WVP of the composite papers were reduced by 100% and 88.56%, respectively, and their antibacterial efficiency was about 100%. As the novel composite papers have remarkable thermal stability, tensile strength, and barrier property, they can be exploited as a potential candidate for eco−friendly, renewable, and biodegradable cellulose paper−based composites for the substitute of petroleum−derived packages.

Abstract
It is still a challenge to find an effective solvent system that can simultaneously dissolve the cellulose and lignin in biomass residues to fabricate lignocellulose hydrogels (LHs). Herein, corncob residues from furfural production were pretreated with alkaline peroxide to regulate the lignin content. The lignin/cellulose composites with various lignin content were then dissolved and regenerated by a green and facile ZnCl2/CaCl2 solvent system. The inorganic salt solvents were served as linkers and flexible LHs were obtained. Substrate material containing 10.75% lignin shows the best compressive stress (76.71 kPa). Inspired by its superior ionic conductivity, the hydrogels were assembled into a solid-state electrolyte for a zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor. This research develops a feasible, simple, and low-cost route for lignin-containing hydrogel preparation and offers insights into the high-value application of agro-industrial lignocellulosic wastes.

Abstract
It is highly desirable to develop a safe, highly efficient, and biodegradable drug carrier with an enhanced drug transport efficiency. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and chitosan (CS) composite hydrogels are promising candidate carriers with biological compatibility and non-cytotoxicity. Herein, the CNF/CS composite beads were prepared by dissolving cellulose and CS in LiBr molten salt hydrate and regenerating in ethanol. This preparation method is facile and efficient, and the obtained porous CNF/CS beads with the weight ratio of 8:2 exhibited a large specific surface area, uniform micro-nano-sized pores, strong mechanical property, and water absorption-resistance. Moreover, these beads as drug (tetracycline hydrochloride, TH) carriers showed a higher encapsulation efficiency (47.4%) at the TH concentration of 5 mg/mL in 24 h, and a higher drug loading rate (12.0%) than pure CNF and other CNF/CS beads prepared with different ratios. In addition, the TH releasing behavior of CNF/CS (8:2) beads fitted well into the zero-order, first-order, and Higuchi models under an acid condition, indicating that the drug release of these pH-sensitive beads was mainly affected by drug concentration under an acid condition. Therefore, these CNF/CS beads have great potential to be used as drug carriers for medical applications.

Abstract
The application of cellulose in the food packaging field has gained increasing attention in recent years, driven by the desire for sustainable products. Cellulose can replace petroleum-based plastics because it can be converted to biodegradable and nontoxic polymers from sustainable natural resources. These products have increasingly been used as coatings, self-standing films, and paperboards in food packaging, owing to their promising mechanical and barrier properties. However, their utilization is limited because of the high hydrophilicity of cellulose. With the presence of a large quantity of functionalities within pristine cellulose and its derivatives, these building blocks provide a unique platform for chemical modification via covalent functionalization to introduce stable and permanent functionalities to cellulose. A primary aim of chemical attachment is to reduce the probability of component leaching in wet and softened conditions and to improve the aqueous, oil, water vapor, and oxygen barriers, thereby extending its specific use in the food packaging field. However, chemical modification may affect the desirable mechanical, thermal stabilities and biodegradability exhibited by pristine cellulose. This review exhaustively reports the research progress on cellulose chemical modification techniques and prospective applications of chemically modified cellulose for use in food packaging, including active packaging.

Abstract
In this paper, nano/microfibrils were applied to enhance the mechanical and hydrophobic properties of the sugarcane bagasse fiber films. The successful preparation of nano/microfibrils was confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fiber length analyzer (FLA), and ion chromatography (IC). The transparency, morphology, mechanical and hydrophobic properties of the cellulose films were evaluated. The results show that the nanoparticle was formed by the hemicellulose diffusing on the surface of the cellulose and agglomerating in the film-forming process at 40 °C. The elastic modulus of the cellulose film was as high as 4140.60 MPa, and the water contact angle was increased to 113°. The micro/nanostructures were formed due to hemicellulose adsorption on nano/microfilament surfaces. The hydrophobicity of the films was improved. The directional crystallization of nano/microfibrous molecules was found. Cellulose films with a high elastic modulus and high elasticity were obtained. It provides theoretical support for the preparation of high-performance cellulose film.
