Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a significant danger to global health, and the need for more effective antimicrobial resistance (AMR) control has been highlighted. Cinnamic acid is abundant in plant products and is a potential starting material for further modification, focusing on the development of new antimicrobial compounds. In the following review, we describe the classification of critical antibacterial-guided reactions applied to the main skeleton structure of cinnamic acid derivatives over the last decade. Of all of the main parts of cinnamic acids, the phenyl ring and the carboxylic group significantly affect antibacterial activity. The results presented in the following review can provide valuable insights into considerable features in the organic modification of cinnamic acids related to antibacterial medication development and the food industry.

Abstract
Chitosan, a cost-effective and eco-friendly natural polymeric material, possesses excellent film-forming properties. However, it has low solubility and biological activity, which hinders its widespread applications. To overcome these limitations, researchers have developed phenolic acid-chitosan derivatives that greatly enhance the mechanical, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of chitosan, expanding its potential application, particularly in food preservation. This review aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the structure and biological activity of chitosan and phenolic acid, as well as various synthetic techniques employed in their modification. Phenolic acid-chitosan derivatives exhibit improved physicochemical properties, such as enhanced water solubility, thermal stability, rheological properties, and crystallinity, through grafting techniques. Moreover, these derivatives demonstrate significantly enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Through graft modification, phenolic acid-chitosan derivatives offer promising applications in food preservation for diverse food products, including fruits, vegetables, meat, and aquatic products. Their ability to improve the preservation and quality of these food items makes them an appealing option for the food industry. This review intends to provide a deeper understanding of phenolic acid-chitosan derivatives by delving into their synthetic technology, characterization, and application in the realm of food preservation.

Abstract
To fabricate multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) based on chitosan (CS) derivative, we first prepared quaternized CS (2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride CS, HTCC) via a one-step approach, then synthesized p-coumaric acid (p-CA) modified HTCC (HTCC-CA) for the first time through amide reaction, and finally fabricated a series of NPs (HTCC-CA NPs) using HTCC-CAs with different substitution degrees and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) by ionic gelation. Newly-prepared HTCC and HTCC-CAs were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, elemental analysis (EA), full-wavelength UV scanning, silver nitrate titration, and Folin-Ciocalteu methods. DLS and TEM results demonstrated that three selected HTCC-CA NPs had moderate size (< 350 nm), good dispersion (PDI < 0.4), and positive zeta potential (11-20 mV). The HTCC-CA NPs had high antibacterial activity against six bacterial strains, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were almost the same as the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values (250-1000 μg/mL). Also, the HTCC-CA NPs had good antioxidation (radical scavenging ratio > 65 %) and low cytotoxicity (relative cell viability >80 %) to the tested cells. Totally, HTCC-CA NPs with high antibacterial activity, great antioxidation, and low cytotoxicity might serve as new biomedical materials for promoting skin wound healing.

Abstract
Chitosan is a marine-origin polysaccharide obtained from the deacetylation of chitin, the main component of crustaceans’ exoskeleton, and the second most abundant in nature. Although this biopolymer has received limited attention for several decades right after its discovery, since the new millennium chitosan has emerged owing to its physicochemical, structural and biological properties, multifunctionalities and applications in several sectors. This review aims at providing an overview of chitosan properties, chemical functionalization, and the innovative biomaterials obtained thereof. Firstly, the chemical functionalization of chitosan backbone in the amino and hydroxyl groups will be addressed. Then, the review will focus on the bottom-up strategies to process a wide array of chitosan-based biomaterials. In particular, the preparation of chitosan-based hydrogels, organic–inorganic hybrids, layer-by-layer assemblies, (bio)inks and their use in the biomedical field will be covered aiming to elucidate and inspire the community to keep on exploring the unique features and properties imparted by chitosan to develop advanced biomedical devices. Given the wide body of literature that has appeared in past years, this review is far from being exhaustive. Selected works in the last 10 years will be considered.

Abstract
The development of a long-acting orally administered dosage form is a challenge. Here, we report development of a multi-layered mucoadhesive gastric patch that could deliver entrapped chemotherapeutic agent for eight days after oral administration. The multi-layered patch was designed to contain core layer, mucoadhesive layer and backing layer. The core layer contained the model chemotherapeutic agent, regorafenib. The mucoadhesive layer made of chitosan-hydrocaffeic acid conjugate showed greatest mucoadhesion strength of 18.1 ± 0.78 kPa in freshly excised rat gastric mucosa. The backing layer made of hydrophobic polycaprolactone-polydimethylsiloxane composite showed the contact angle of 120 ± 4.7° after placement of water drop. The entrapped regorafenib predominantly released from the mucoadhesive-side of the patch into simulated gastric fluid and showed a zero-order release profile. The patches were found to be stable for desired characteristics for up to 3 months in long term storage conditions. The pharmacokinetic studies in rat model revealed constant plasma concentration of regorafenib sustained for 8 days after oral administration of gastric patch. The gastric tissue where the patch adhered for 8 days did not show any significant histological changes compared with the normal gastric tissue. The oral administration of single dose of regorafenib-loaded gastric patch in FaDu cell xenografted tumor bearing athymic nude mice has shown significant (P < 0.05) reduction in the tumor volume over 7 days compared to the control group. Taken together, the multi-layered mucoadhesive gastric patch can be developed as a long-acting oral drug delivery system.

Abstract
Over the past thirty years, research has shown the huge potential of chitosan in biomedical applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering and regeneration, cancer therapy, and antimicrobial treatments, among others. One of the major advantages of this interesting polysaccharide is its modifiability, which facilitates its use in tailor-made applications. In this way, the molecular structure of chitosan has been conjugated with multiple molecules to modify its mechanical, biological, or chemical properties. Here, we review the conjugation of chitosan with some bioactive molecules: hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs); since these derivatives have been probed to enhance some of the biological effects of chitosan and to fine-tune its characteristics for its application in the biomedical field. First, the main characteristics of chitosan and HCAs are presented; then, the currently employed conjugation strategies between chitosan and HCAs are described; and, finally, the studied biomedical applications of these derivatives are discussed to present their limitations and advantages, which could lead to proximal therapeutic uses.

Abstract
The development of new antimicrobial agents is important to combat infections caused by pathogenic bacteria. Herein, Hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPCS), a hydrophilic modified product of chitosan (CS), was employed as a carrier of the photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) through an amide bond to obtain the products (HPCS-Ce6 conjugates) with a degree of substitution (DS) ranging from 2.95% to 5.25%. The UV-vis absorption spectra and 1H NMR spectra confirmed the successful synthesis of the products. The products have a better and more stable reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capacity and higher bacterial affinity than Ce6. At a very low dose (1.8 μg/mL), the highest DS product (HPCS-Ce6-3) can effectively kill Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) under 660 nm irradiation. In addition, the HPCS-Ce6 conjugates showed high biocompatibility in the CCK-8 test. The HPCS-Ce6 conjugates could be a photodynamic antibacterial agent with good water solubility, high biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity.
