Formation and structure evolution of starch nanoplatelets by deep eutectic solvent of choline chloride/oxalic acid dihydrate treatment

Corrosion inhibition activity of a natural polysaccharide from Dysosma versipellis using tailor-made deep eutectic solvents

In this work, a total of 18 types of choline chloride, betaine, and L-proline-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized to determine the extraction yield of a natural polysaccharide (PSA) from Dysosma versipellis using an ultrasound-assisted extraction method. Results indicate that the choline-oxalic acid-based DES has the best extraction yield for PSA due to the proper physical-chemical properties between PSA and DES. To evaluate the optimal extraction conditions, a response surface methodology was carried out. Under the optimal conditions, the extraction yield of PSA reaches 10.37 % (± 0.03 %), higher than the conventional extraction methods. Findings from FT-IR and NMR suggest that the extracted PSA belongs to a neutral polysaccharide with (1 → 6)-linked α-d-glucopyranose in the main chain. Interestingly, results from various electrochemical measurements show the extracted PSA exhibits excellent corrosion inhibition performance for mild steel (MS) in a 0.5 M HCl solution, with 90.8 % of maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency at 210 mg L-1. SEM and XPS measurements reveal the formation of a protective layer on the MS surface. The adsorption behaviour of extracted PSA well obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm containing the chemisorption and physisorption. Additionally, theoretical calculations validate the experimental findings.

Bioinspired pullulan-starch nanoplatelets nanocomposite films with enhanced mechanical properties

Inspired by the leaf-vein network structure, the pullulan-starch nanoplatelets (SNPs) bioinspired films with enhanced strength and toughness were successfully fabricated through a water evaporation-induced self-assembly technique. SNPs (SNP200 and SNP600) of two sizes were separated by differential centrifugation. Interactions between SNPs and pullulan during drying resulted in the vein-like network structure in both nanocomposite films when the appropriate amounts of SNP200 or SNP600 were added to pullulan, respectively. The TS and toughness values of pullulan with 1 % w/w SNP200 films reached up to 51.05 MPa and 69.65 MJ·m-3, which were 86 % and 223 % higher than those of the neat pullulan films, respectively. Moreover, the TS and toughness values of pullulan-SNP200 were significantly higher than those of pullulan-SNP600 films, when SNP content exceeded the 1 % w/w level. By applying a graph theory, the network structures were found to correlate with the mechanical properties of the pullulan-SNPs bioinspired films. The new strategy for designing starch nanoplatelets-based edible films that combine mechanical strength and toughness holds promises for the development of novel biobased composite materials for food packaging application.

Supramolecular structure of microwave treated bamboo for production of lignin-containing nanocellulose by oxalic acid dihydrate

Supramolecular structure of cellulosic materials from microwave treatment were throughly investigated for production of lignin-containing nanocellulose. The results revealed that both the intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds were altered by microwave irradiation. Cellulose I_β was the main component in microwave treated bamboo (MTB) with smaller interplanar spacing, and the cellulose molecules were loosely connected resulting in a loose structure. Thereafter, MTB was used to produce lignin-containing nanocellulose by using oxalic acid dihydrate (OAD) to test the feasibility on its efficiency. The chemical consumed for the preparation of lignin-containing nanocellulose (LCN) with a comparable yield (68.08-82.33 %) from MTB was merely 1/10 that from conventional cellulosic materials, indicating the supramolecular structural changes of bamboo cellulose induced by microwave treatment provided suitable conditions for the subsequent hydrolysis of OAD to prepare LCN. The LCN was further added into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix endowed excellent UV shielding property and thermal stability for the PVA/LCN films. This study was aimed to provide an environmentally friendly method on the production and application of LCN from bamboo by employing microwave treatment from the perspective of supramolecular level.

DES: their effect on lignin and recycling performance

Lignocellulosic biomass raw materials are renewable resources with abundant reserves in nature, and have many advantages, such as being green, biodegradable and cheap. Lignin, one of the three significant components of lignocellulose, possesses a chemical structure rich in phenylpropane and is a primary aromatic resource for the bio-based economy. For the extraction and degradation of lignin, the most common method is the pretreatment of lignocellulose with deep eutectic solvents (DES), which have similar physicochemical properties to ionic liquids (ILs) but address the disadvantages associated with ILs (DES have the advantages of low cost, low toxicity, and non-flammability). In lignocellulose pretreatment, a large amount of solvent is generally required to achieve the desired effect. However, after treatment, a substantial volume of solvent will be wasted, and thus, the problem of the recovery and reuse of DES solution needs to be adequately solved. The methods and mechanisms of perfect DES regeneration will be discussed from the perspective of the elemental composition and features of DESs in this review, which will also outline the present DES recovery methods, such as rotary evaporation, membrane separation, freeze-drying, electrodialysis, etc. The detailed process and the advantages and disadvantages of each method since 2018 are introduced in detail. Future DES recovery methods have been prospected, and the optimization of the functional properties of DESs after recovery is discussed. It is expected to find a convenient and efficient application method for DES extraction or degradation of lignin with low energy and low cost.
