Wet-spinning fluorescent alginate fibres achieved by doping PEI modified CPDs for multiple anti-counterfeiting

Sodium alginate based adsorbent: Facile fabrication, extraordinary removal efficacy of anionic dyes and adsorption mechanism

Eco-friendly and renewable sodium alginate, as a potential alternative to fossil resources, has attracted considerable attention in wastewater treatment field. Herein, we develop a SA/PEI/PEG (sodium alginate/polyethyleneimine/polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) adsorbent in which SA was functionalized by PEI/PEG via a facile but effective strategy of one-pot gelation of aqueous SA/PEI/PEG solution. Systematic investigations were accomplished to explore the effects of adsorbent factors on the adsorption performances of the adsorbent towards the anionic dyes CR (congo red), AB-10B (amido black-10B), and AB-25 (acid blue-25). Strikingly, the SA/PEI/PEG exhibited exceptional adsorption performance to CR (2782 mg g-1, 90.6 %), AB-10B (1369 mg g-1, 90.9 %) and AB-25 (4221 mg g-1, 92.6 %) at 30 °C, pH = 3, 200 r min-1 and oscillated 24 h, and demonstrating exceptional reusability after six cycles of adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, the three kinetic, four isothermic and one thermodynamic models were used to investigate the adsorption behaviors of the adsorbent towards these dyes. The possible adsorption mechanism is suggested: Hydrogen bond interactions and electrostatic attractions between SA/PEI/PEG and the dyes primarily contribute to exceptional adsorption capacity. The SA/PEI/PEG adsorbent endowed with easy fabrication, extraordinary adsorption capacity and excellent reusability promises potential application prospects in wastewater purification industry.

Photochromic biomaterials: Synthesis and fluorescence properties of spiroxanthenes-grafted alginate derivatives

Herein, we reported a general and green synthetic strategy for photochromic functional alginate derivatives grafting with isoindolinone spiroxanthenes. Under mild condition, diverse 2-aminoalkyl isoindolinone spiroxanthene derivatives have been prepared from organic photochromic isobenzofuranone spiroxanthenes (including rhodamine B, rhodamine 6G and fluorescein), and grafted on alginate chains through amidation reaction using diamine as a linkage with water as a green solvent at room temperature. The photochromic properties of the fluorophores-modified polymers and the effect of pH value have been explored. Under acid conditions, the spiroisoindolinone rings of alginate derivatives are opened resulting in showing absorption bands and fluorescence with orange to green emission, while the alginate derivatives turned to colourless under basic conditions which is reversibly. In addition to biodegradability and biocompatibility, the polymers exhibit good film-forming properties simultaneously. The films and fibers produced from the alginate derivatives also project good fluorescence properties.

Recent Advances in Flexible CNC-Based Chiral Nematic Film Materials

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is a renewable resource derived from lignocellulosic materials, known for its optical permeability, biocompatibility, and unique self-assembly properties. Recent years have seen great progresses in cellulose nanocrystal-based chiral photonic materials. However, due to its inherent brittleness, cellulose nanocrystal shows limitations in the fields of flexible materials, optical sensors and food freshness testing. In order to solve the above limitations, attempts have been made to improve the flexibility of cellulose nanocrystal materials without destroying their structural color. Despite these progresses, a systematic review on them is lacking. This review aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of the main strategies and the latest research findings on the flexibilization of cellulose nanocrystal-based chiral nematic film materials (FCNM). Specifically, typical substances and methods used for their preparation are summarized. Moreover, different kinds of cellulose nanocrystal-based composites are compared in terms of flexibility. Finally, potential applications and future challenges of flexible cellulose nanocrystal-based chiral nematic materials are discussed, inspiring further research in this field.

Chemical synthesis of carbon dots with blue, green and red emission for dopamine reversible switching probes

Carbon dots (CDs) possess the merits such as energy efficiency, green sustainability and environmental friendliness, comparing with top-down synthesis methods at higher pressure or temperature condition. Here, a variety of emission states CDs were prepared by using the method of room temperature chemistry by selecting green raw materials such as glucose, p-phthalaldehyde and m-diethylaminophenol. The luminescence mechanism was studied in detail. The luminescent center of blue emitting carbon dots (B-CDs) and green emitting carbon dots (G-CDs) is CO bond, and the increased contents of CO bond lead to the creation of new energy levels between the energy gaps of HOMO and LUMO levels, which results in the red shift of luminescence wavelength. The emission state of red emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) is due to the formation of amino N. In addition, R-CDs have an exclusive respond to dopamine (DA) and are regarded as good fluorescent probes for detecting DA. Furthermore, the addition of ascorbic acid (AA) restores the luminescence of R-CDs quenched by DA. Therefore, R-CDs has great application potential as a selective fluorescent "turn on-off" probe.

Heating-free synthesis of red emissive carbon dots through separated processes of polymerization and carbonization

Polymerization and carbonization are believed as two basic processes for the bottom-up synthesis of carbon dots (CDs). Since these two processes usually occur simultaneously due to the high reaction temperature and fast reaction rate, it is still a challenge to separate and control these two processes. In the present work, we reported a new room temperature method, which achieved the separated and controlled polymerization and carbonization processes. The polymerization process is realized by dissolving o-phenylenediamine (OPD) in ethanol at room temperature, and finally obtained polymer dots (PDs) without any lattice with a sphere size of 29.6 nm. The carbonization process begins in a manual way by adding concentrated sulfuric acid. After carbonization, CDs (noted as CPDs in this work) with a size of 3.6 nm and a clear lattice can be obtained. Importantly, the separated polymerization and carbonization make us possible to adjust the composition or interactions of intermediate products during the synthesis process. As a prototype, we added acetic acid (AA) additives into OPD precursors during the polymerization stage. Due to the crosslink enhanced emission (CEE) effect via hydrogen bonds which are produced by the amide groups from AA reaction products with H in the -NH₃⁺ or aromatic ring, the resulted CPDs show improved PLQY from an initial 6.87% (without AA) to 16.47%. The current work realized the separated and controllable polymerization and carbonization processes, opening up the door for tuning the composition and interactions of intermediate products before carbonization.

Janus biomass aerogel for Highly-Efficient steam Generation, Desalination, degradation of organics and water disinfection

Solar-driven water purification has been deemed as a cheap, green and renewable technology to mitigate water shortage and pollution. Herein, a biomass aerogel with hydrophilic-hydrophobic Janus structure has been prepared as solar water evaporator, which is achieved by partially modifying hydrothermal-treated loofah sponge (HLS) with reduced graphene oxide (rGO). It's a rare design philosophy that HLS serves as a substrate with large pores and hydrophilic properties to ensure continuous and effective water transport, and the hydrophobic layer with rGO modification guarantees good salt resistance in seawater desalination with high photothermal conversion efficiency. As a result, the obtained Janus aerogel, p-HLS@rGO-12, exhibits impressive solar-driven evaporation rates of 1.75 kg m^-2h^-1 and 1.54 kg m^-2h^-1 for pure water and seawater respectively, with good cycling stability in the evaporation process. Furthermore, p-HLS@rGO-12 also demonstrates outstanding photothermal degradation of rhodamine B (greater than98.8 % in 2 h) and sterilization of E. coli (nearly 100 % in 2 h). This work offers an unusual approach to achieve highly efficient solar-driven steam generation, seawater desalination, organic pollutant degradation, and water disinfection simultaneously. The prepared Janus biomass aerogel holds great potential application in the field of seawater desalination and wastewater purification.
