Abstract
Antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging films play a crucial role in extending food shelf life, maintaining quality, and enhancing safety by inhibiting microbial growth and slowing oxidation processes. However, most commercial preservative films suffer from limited antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Moreover, these films are made from petroleum-based materials that degrade into microplastics, resulting in environmental contamination and potential health risks for humans. Herein, an antibacterial and antioxidant food packaging film (CS-SAP@R) is developed by integrating star-shaped amphiphilic polypeptides (SAP) and resveratrol (R) into the chitosan (CS) matrix. The incorporation of SAP not only effectively addresses the existing compatibility issues between the highly hydrophobic resveratrol and water-soluble CS film, but also significantly enhances the antimicrobial properties of CS. Additionally, the well-integrated resveratrol molecules endow the film with superior antioxidant properties. Furthermore, CS-SAP@R has achieved bacterial killing rates of 97.31% against E. coli and 99.05% against S. aureus. The enhanced characteristics of the CS-SAP@R film contribute to its exceptional preservation performance, effectively extending the shelf life of perishable products by ≈3 days when stored at 4 °C. These remarkable attributes underscore the benefits of polypeptide-based biopolymers and demonstrate the potential applicability of the CS-SAP@R film in effectively safeguarding perishable products.

Abstract
There is growing interest in the use of bio-based materials as viable alternatives to petrochemical-based packaging. However, the practical application of bio-based films is often hampered by their poor barrier and poor mechanical properties. In this context, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their exceptional biodegradability, high aspect ratio, and large surface area. The extraction of CNFs from agricultural waste or non-food biomass represents a sustainable approach that can effectively balance cost and environmental impacts. The functionalization of CNFs improves the economics of raw materials and production processes while expanding their applications. This paper reviews recent advances in cellulose nanofibers, including their sources, surface modification, and characterization techniques. Furthermore, we systematically discuss the interactions of CNFs with different composites in the development of functional food films. Finally, we highlight the application of cellulose nanofiber films in food preservation. Due to their environmentally friendly properties, CNFs are a promising alternative to petroleum-based plastics. The aim of this paper is to present the latest discoveries and advances in CNFs while exploring the future prospects for edible food films, thereby encouraging further research and application of CNFs in the field of active food packaging.

Abstract
In this study, O-quaternary ammonium chitosan (O-HTCC) containing bicationic antibacterial active groups was synthesized to develop an O-HTCC/PVA porous nanofibrous film to enhance antibacterial activity, leveraging surface modification and nano-porous structure design. Uniform and smooth nanofibrous structures (average diameter: 72-294 nm) were successfully obtained using a simple and feasible electrospinning method. A response surface model via Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to clarify the interaction relationship between O-HTCC fiber diameter and three critical electrospinning parameters (O-HTCC concentration, applied voltage, feed flow rate), predicting that the minimum O-HTCC fiber diameter (174 nm) could be achieved with 7 wt% of O-HTCC concentration, 14 kV of voltage, and 0.11 mL/h of feed flow rate. Linear regression (R2 = 0.9736, Radj2 = 0.9716) and the Anderson Darling test demonstrated the excellent fit of the RSM-BBD model. Compared to N-HTCC/PVA nanofibrous film, the O-HTCC/PVA version showed increased growth inhibition and more effective antibacterial efficacies against Escherichia coli (E. coli) (~;86.34 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (~;99.99 %). DSC revealed improved thermal stability with an increased melting temperature (238 °C) and endothermic enthalpy (157.7 J/g). This study holds potential for further development of antibacterial packaging to extend food shelf-life to reduce bacterial infection.

Abstract
In future, global demand for low-cost-sustainable materials possessing good strength is going to increase tremendously, to replace synthetic plastic materials, thus motivating scientists towards green composites. The PLA has been the most promising sustainable bio composites, due to its inherent antibacterial property, biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and good thermal and mechanical characteristics. However, PLA has certain demerits such as poor water and gas barrier properties, and low glass transition temperature, which restricts its use in food packaging applications. To overcome this, PLA is blended with polysaccharides such as gum and cellulose to enhance the water barrier, thermal, crystallization, degradability, and mechanical properties. Moreover, the addition of these polysaccharides not only reduces the production cost but also helps in manufacturing packaging material with superior quality. Hence this review focuses on various fabrication techniques, degradation of the ternary composite, and its application in the food sector. Moreover, this review discusses the enhanced barrier and mechanical properties of the ternary blend packaging material. Incorporation of gum enhanced flexibility, while the reinforcement of cellulose improved the structural integrity of the ternary composite. The unique properties of this ternary composite make it suitable for extending the shelf life of food packaging, specifically for fruits, vegetables, and fried products. Future studies must be conducted to investigate the optimization of formulations for specific food types, explore scalability for industrial applications, and integrate these composites with emerging technologies (3D/4D printing).

Abstract
Strong, tough and sustainable materials are in high demand in various engineering applications. We demonstrate a potential sustainable hybrid film made from natural cellulose and a biobased slurry. Through a simple and scalable approach, cellulose can be processed into an advanced material with over 2.8 and 9.2-fold increase in dry strength and toughness after curing and a 728-fold increase in wet strength, respectively. In addition, these hybrid composite films display an outstanding antioxidant activity surpassing 90 %, along with excellent ultraviolet radiation shielding and thermal insulation properties. Further, the hybrid films can be fabricated by integrating all-natural materials and still guarantee their unique functionality. We also demonstrate the feasibility of a circular bioeconomy by recycling the hybrid film using a green, deep eutectic solvent to fabricate a recycled hybrid film that displays excellent mechanical and optical properties. When recycling is unsuitable or economical, the hybrid film can naturally degrade in the soil under 6 months. These encouraging findings suggest the promise of cellulose hybrid films as a renewable, low-cost, tough, and strong material with the potential to replace nonrenewable synthetic plastics and products.

Abstract
It is essential to use environment-friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable and sustainable materials for various applications. Biopolymers are derived from renewable sources like plants, microorganisms, and agricultural wastes. Unlike conventional polymers, biopolymer has a lower carbon footprint and contributes less to greenhouse gas emission. All biopolymers are biodegradable, meaning natural processes can break them down into harmless products such as water and biomass. This property is of utmost importance for various sustainable applications. This review discusses different classifications of biopolymers based on origin, including plant-based, animal-based and micro-organism-based biopolymers. The review also discusses the desirable properties that are required in materials for their use as packaging material. It also discusses the different processes used in modifying the biopolymer to improve its properties. Finally, this review shows the recent developments taking place in using specifically animal origin-based biopolymer and its use in packaging material. It was observed that animal-origin-based biopolymers, although they possess unique properties however, are less explored than plant-origin biopolymers. The animal-origin-based biopolymers covered in this review are chitosan, gelatin, collagen, keratin, casein, whey, hyaluronic acid and silk fibroin. This review will help in renewing research interest in animal-origin biopolymers. In summary, biopolymer offers a sustainable and environment-friendly alternative to conventional polymers. Their versatility, biocompatibility will help create a more sustainable future.

Abstract
Self-healing hydrogels have received considerable attention as a promising material for flexible electronic devices given their mechanical durability and structurally tunable properties. In this study, a highly stretchable self-healing hydrogel with dual cross-linking network was developed via borate ester bonds generated by polyvinyl alcohol and borax, and acylhydrazone bonds formed by aldehyde nanocellulose with adipic acid dihydrazide-modified alginate. Compared with the single network hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol and borax, the introduction of dynamic acylhydrazone bonds greatly increases the flexibility of the hydrogel. The elongation rate increased from 480 % to approximately 1440 %, and the self-healing efficiency increased from 84.6 % to 92.7 % after healing for 60 min at ambient temperature without any stimulus. Moreover, the longer the self-healing time, the more evident the self-healing effect of the acylhydrazone bonds. In addition, electrical measurements confirmed a wide working strain range (ca.1000 %), durability, and reliability. Once assembled as a strain sensor, the hydrogel is able to monitor both large and subtle human motions. Besides, this hydrogel exhibited desirable biocompatibility, as demonstrated by in vitro cytotoxicity towards NIH 3T3 cells. These integrated properties make this nanocomposite hydrogel a promising candidate for future applications as green, flexible, and smart sensors.

Abstract
Surface treatment by adhesive polymers is a promising solution to immobilize and study bacteria cells through microscopic assays and, for example, control their growth or determine their susceptibility to antibiotic treatment. The stability of such functional films in wet conditions is crucial, as the film degradation would compromise a persistent use of the coated devices. In this work, low roughness chitosan thin films of degrees of acetylation (DA) ranging from 0.5 % to 49 % were chemically grafted onto silicon and glass substrates and we have demonstrated how the physicochemical properties of the surfaces and the bacterial response were DA-dependent. A fully deacetylated chitosan film presented an anhydrous crystalline structure while the hydrated crystalline allomorph was the preferred structure at higher DA. Moreover, their hydrophilicity increased at higher DA, leading to higher film swelling. Low DA chitosan-grafted substrate favored bacterial growth away from the surface and could be envisioned as bacteriostatic surfaces. Contrarily, an optimum of Escherichia coli adhesion was found for substrates modified with chitosan of DA = 35 %: these surfaces are adapted for the study of bacterial growth and antibiotic testing, with the possibility of reusing the substrates without affecting the grafted film - ideal for limiting single-use devices.
