Controlled hydrophobic modification of cellulose nanocrystals for tunable Pickering emulsions

Synthesis and properties of thiol-modified CNC via surface tosylation

SH-containing polymers and nanoparticles are a significant direction in the creation of novel materials. The aim of this work is the synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with a surface modified by tosyl functions (CNC-Ts) and their further modification into SH-containing nanocrystals (CNC-SH). CNC-Ts were synthesized in an aqueous-organic emulsion from never-dried particles, while maintaining the size and supramolecular structure of CNC; the content of Ts-functions is up to 2.5 mmol·g-1. Structure of the derivatives was analyzed by TEM, XRD, CP/MAS 13C NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Nucleophilic substitution and hydrolysis of the obtained thioisouronium salts leads to the production of CNC-SH. To quantify SH-groups we used elemental analysis, potentiometric titration and Folin-Ciocalteu and Ellman's reagents. It is shown that SH-groups on the surface are partially oxidized and are involved in a dense network of hydrogen bonds. Rheological properties of CNC-SH hydrosols are close to those of CNC, addition of H2O2 at acidic pH leads to an increase in viscosity of the system; H2O2 added at neutral pH causes opposite effect - viscosity decreases. CNC-SH have a high capacity for sorption of Cr(VI) in acidic environments and exhibit photoreductive properties under UV irradiation.

Morphological Changes of Polymer-Grafted Nanocellulose during a Drying Process

Nanocellulose is emerging as a sustainable building block in materials science. Surface modification via polymer grafting has proven to be effective in tuning diverse material properties of nanocellulose, including wettability of films and the reinforcement effect in polymer matrices. Despite its widespread use in various environments, the structure of a single polymer-grafted nanocellulose remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the morphologies of polymer-grafted CNFs at water-mica and air-mica interfaces by using all-atom molecular dynamics simulation and atomic force microscopy. We show that the morphologies of the polymer-grafted CNFs undergo a marked change in response to the surrounding environment due to variations in the conformation of the surface polymer chains. Our results provide novel insights into the molecular structure of polymer-grafted CNFs and can facilitate the design and development of innovative biomass-based nanomaterials.

Molecular Insight into the Self-Assembly Process of Cellulose Iβ Microfibril

The self-assembly process of β-D-glucose oligomers on the surface of cellulose Iβ microfibril involves crystallization, and this process is analyzed herein, in terms of the length and flexibility of the oligomer chain, by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The characterization of this process involves the structural relaxation of the oligomer, the recognition of the cellulose I microfibril, and the formation of several hydrogen bonds (HBs). This process is monitored on the basis of the changes in non-bonded energies and the interaction with hydrophilic and hydrophobic crystal faces. The oligomer length is considered a parameter for capturing insight into the energy landscape and its stability in the bound form with the cellulose I microfibril. We notice that the oligomer-microfibril complexes are more stable by increasing the number of hydrogen bond interactions, which is consistent with a gain in electrostatic energy. Our studies highlight the interaction with hydrophilic crystal planes on the microfibril and the acceptor role of the flexible oligomers in HB formation. In addition, we study by MD simulation the interaction between a protofibril and the cellulose I microfibril in solution. In this case, the main interaction consists of the formation of hydrogen bonds between hydrophilic faces, and those HBs involve donor groups in the protofibril.
