Abstract
Cyclitols are polyhydroxy cycloalkanes, each containing at least three hydroxyls attached to a different ring carbon atom. The most important cyclitol derivatives are inositols, quercitols, conduritols and pinitols, which form a group of naturally occurring polyhydric alcohols and are widely found in plants. In addition, synthetic production of cyclitols has gained importance in recent years. Cylitols are molecules synthesized in plants as a precaution against salt or water stress. They have important functions in cell functioning as they exhibit important properties such as membrane biogenesis, ion channel physiology, signal transduction, osmoregulation, phosphate storage, cell wall formation and antioxidant activity. The biological activities of these very important molecules, obtained both synthetically and from the extraction of plants, are described in this review.

Abstract
This study describes the synthesis and radiosynthesis of eight new [18F]fluoro-inositol-based radiotracers in myo- and scyllo-inositol configuration. These radiotracers are equipped with a propyl linker bearing fluorine-18. This fluorinated arm is either on a hydroxyl group, i.e. O-alkylated inositols, or on the cyclohexyl backbone, i.e. C-branched derivatives. To modulate lipophilicity, inositols were synthesized in acetylated or hydroxylated form. Automated radiosynthesis was performed on the AllInOne module and the radiotracers were produced in good radiochemical yields (15-31.5% dc). Preliminary in vivo preclinical evaluation of these eight [18F]fluoro-inositols as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging agents in a breast tumour-bearing mouse model was performed and compared with [18F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ([18F]FDG). Amongst the different inositols, [18F]myo-2 showed the highest tumour uptake 2.34±0.39%ID/g, revealing the potential of this tracer for monitoring breast cancer.

Abstract
Efficient routes were developed for the diastereoselective synthesis of new O-alkylated and C-branched inositols and their corresponding fluoro analogues. The key steps of the synthesis were the easy accessibility of different types of arms in term of configuration (myo and scyllo), the linking method and length, which could modulate the biological properties. These inositol derivatives, bearing an arm terminated either with a hydroxy group or a fluorine atom, could be interesting candidates for diastereoisomeric intermediates and biological evaluations, especially for PET imaging experiments.

Abstract
Cell signaling via inositol phosphates, in particular via the second messenger myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, and phosphoinositides comprises a huge field of biology. Of the nine 1,2,3,4,5,6-cyclohexanehexol isomers, myo-inositol is pre-eminent, with "other" inositols (cis-, epi-, allo-, muco-, neo-, L-chiro-, D-chiro-, and scyllo-) and derivatives rarer or thought not to exist in nature. However, neo- and d-chiro-inositol hexakisphosphates were recently revealed in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, thus highlighting the paucity of knowledge of the origins and potential biological functions of such stereoisomers, a prevalent group of environmental organic phosphates, and their parent inositols. Some "other" inositols are medically relevant, for example, scyllo-inositol (neurodegenerative diseases) and d-chiro-inositol (diabetes). It is timely to consider exploration of the roles and applications of the "other" isomers and their derivatives, likely by exploiting techniques now well developed for the myo series.

Abstract
The α-fluorination of α- and β-C-ethanals of galactose using Jørgensen catalysts and NFSI was investigated. The crude reaction products were transformed to their primary alcohol or methylenated derivatives, which are versatile precursors to biologically interesting fluorinated glycomimetics. The α-C-glycoside substrate gave moderate to high yields of fluorinated α-C-glycosides with minor amounts of β-C-glycoside analogues. The reactions on the β-C-glycoside were lower yielding but gave exclusively fluorinated β-C-glycosides. For both α- and β-C-glycoside substrates (R) and (S) catalyst showed complementary stereoselectivity. The preparation of difluorinated materials required the use of racemic catalyst as enantiomerically pure catalyst gave intractable mixtures of products. These results are in line with the results for simple achiral aldehydes, and suggest that stereochemistry in the reactions of these chiral, highly substituted, carbohydrate-derived aldehydes are controlled primarily by the chirality in the catalyst.

Abstract
A conformationally locked fluoropentol undergoes an interesting transformation to (trans,anti,trans,anti,trans)-perhydro-2,3,4a,6,7,8a-naphthalenehexol essentially under conditions of base-induced transesterification. The proposed rationale for the observed metamorphosis involves a nucleophilic displacement of fluoride, and subsequent stereo- and regioselective anti-Fürst-Plattner-type ring-opening of the epoxide thus formed.

Abstract
The preparation of 2,3,6-O-tribenzyl- and 2,6-O-dibenzyl-myo-inositols with beta-primary, secondary, and tertiary 4-C-alkyl or aryl groups is reported. Five of these novel polyols are elaborated to 4-C-alkyl Ins(1,4,5)P(3) and Ins(1,3,4,5)P(4) analogues. Regio- and stereoselective introduction of 4-C-alkyl or aryl substituents proceeded via a 4-exo-methylene oxide. Subsequent regioselective reduction of an orthobenzoate provided a divergent method to access both InsP(3) and InsP(4) precursors. Previously unreported phosphorylation of the tertiary hydroxyl and global deprotection afforded novel analogues that retain their full complement of polar and charged binding features.

Abstract
An asymmetric synthesis of enantioenriched, highly functionalized fluorinated carbocycles has been developed based on an enantioselective Sharpless dihydroxylation of cyclohexadienylsilanes, combined with a diastereoselective electrophilic fluorodesilylation. Several parameters define the level of diastereocontrol for the fluorination step. These include the relative stereochemistry of the starting endocyclic allylsilanes and the structural features of the reactants. As expected for an S(E)2' mechanism, the fluorodesilylation occurred with clean transposition of the double bond, with the attack of the electrophilic fluorinating agent taking place preferentially anti to the silyl group. For the fluorination step, the best selectivities were observed for the monocyclic anti, syn benzyl-protected precursors and for the syn,syn starting allylsilane. Full NMR spectroscopic analysis of the fluorinated monocyclic compounds, which possess an endocyclic double bond flanked by two electronegative groups (the methoxy group and the fluorine substituent) revealed that a subtle combination of steric (1,3-axial/pseudoaxial interaction) and stereoelectronic effects (pi-sigma* interaction) favours the preferential conformers featuring the methoxy group in a pseudoaxial position.

Ether, urethane and ethylidene acetal functions were simultaneously cleaved by the reagent, whereas the trichloroethylidene groups were still intact or were only removed in small quantities. Especially, the urea function of D-5-O-benzyl-4-O-cyclohexylcarbamoyl-3-deoxy-3-(N,N'-dicyclohexylureido)-6-O-methyl-1,2-O-(2,2,2-trichloroethylidene)-chiro-inositol was decomposed to a cyclohexylamino group. The three synthetic steps-hydrodehalogenation, HI-deprotection and peracylation- were combined without purification of the intermediates.

Abstract
A difluorinated dienophile underwent cycloaddition reactions with a range of furans to afford cycloadducts which could be processed regio- and stereoselectively via episulfonium ions, generated by the reaction between their alkenyl groups and phenylsulfenyl chloride. The oxabicyclic products were oxidised to the phenylsulfonyl level and ring opened via E1(C)B or reductive desulfonative pathways to afford, ultimately, difluorinated cyclohexene or cyclohexane polyols.
