Abstract
Thioglycosides are an important class of sugars, since they can be used as non-ionic biosurfactants, biomimetic glycosides, and building blocks for carbohydrate synthesis. Previously, Brønsted- or Lewis-acid-catalyzed dehydrative glycosylations between a 1-hydroxy sugar and a thiol have been reported to yield open-chain dithioacetal sugars as the major products instead of the desired thioglycosides. These dithioacetal sugars are by-products derived from the endocyclic bond cleavage of the thioglycosides. Herein, we report dehydrative glycosylation in water mediated by a Brønsted acid-surfactant combined catalyst (BASC). Glycosylations between 1-hydroxy furanosyl/pyranosyl sugars and primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic/aromatic thiols in the presence of dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) provided the thioglycoside products in moderate to good yields. Microwave irradiation led to improvements in the yields and a shortening of the reaction time. Remarkably, open-chain dithioacetal sugars were not detected in the DBSA-mediated glycosylations in water. This method is a simple, convenient, and rapid approach to produce a library of thioglycosides without the requirement of anhydrous conditions. Moreover, this work also provides an excellent example of complementary reactivity profiles of glycosylation in organic solvents and water.

Abstract
The lack of effective methods to perform direct β-selective glycosylation reactions with 2-deoxy-1,4-dithio-D-erythro-pentofuranosides has long been a significant stumbling block for the multi-gram synthesis of 4'-thio-2'-deoxy nucleosides. In addition, previously reported methods for the preparation of appropriately substituted 2-deoxy-1,4-dithio-D-erythro-pentofuranosides have proven problematic for large scale synthesis. To address these issues, herein we describe the modification and optimization of previously reported methods to allow for the convenient large scale synthesis of benzyl substituted 2-deoxy-1,4-dithio-D-erythro-pentofuranosides. Furthermore, we describe the development of reaction conditions for β-selective glycosylation reactions of benzyl substituted 2-deoxy-1,4-dithio-D-erythro-pentofuranosides with both N4-benzoylcytosine and 5-aza-cytosine to enable the practical multi-gram syntheses of the clinical candidates 4'-thio-2'-deoxycytidine (T-dCyd) and 5-aza-4'-thio-2'-deoxycytidine (aza-T-dCyd). Taken together, these new synthetic developments have made possible the preclinical and early clinical development of these important anticancer agents at the National Cancer Institute.

Abstract
Late oxidation of hexose based building blocks or the use of uronic acid containing building blocks are two complementary strategies in the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans, the latter simplifiying the later stages of the process. Here we report the synthesis and evaluation of various disaccharide donors-uronic acids and their pyranose equivalents-for the synthesis of heparan sulfate, using an established protective group strategy. Hexose based "imidate" type donors perform well in the studied glycosylations, while their corresponding uronate esters fall short; a uronate ester thioglycoside performs equal to, if not better than, a hexose thioglycoside equivalent.

Abstract
In the present study a series of novel pyrazolines derivatives has been synthesized, and their structures assigned on the basis of FT-Raman, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectral data and computational DFT calculations. A joint computational study using B3LYP/6-311G(2d,2p) density functional theory and FT-Raman investigation on the tautomerism of 3-(4-substituted-phenyl)-4,5-dihydro-5-(4-substituted-phenyl)pyrazole-1-carbothioamide and 3-(4-substituted-phenyl)-4,5-dihydro-5-(4-substituted-phenyl)pyrazole-1-carboxamide are presented. The structures were characterized as a minimum in the potential energy surface using DFT. The calculated Raman and NMR spectra were of such remarkable agreement to the experimental results that the equilibrium between tautomeric forms has been discussed in detail. Our study suggests the existence of tautomers, the carboxamide/carbothioamide group may tautomerize, in the solid state or in solution. Thermodynamic data calculated suggests that the R(CS)NH2 and R(CO)NH2 species are more stable than the R(CNH)SH and R(CNH)OH species. Additionally, results found for the (1)H NMR shifting, pointed out to which structure is present.

Abstract
1,2-cis-Glycosyl acetates with the α-configuration were revealed to be very unreactive towards Lewis acid catalyzed thioglycosylations. Optimal and cost-effective conditions for enabling this direct conversion is absent in the literature. Our studies have shown that elevating the reaction temperature with a catalytic amount of BF(3)·OEt(2) was more effective than changing Lewis acids with higher acidities to accommodate the low reactivity of α-glycosyl acetates. The effect of impurities in stored BF(3)·OEt(2) on the reaction is also discussed.

Abstract
Continuing our search for natural product and natural product-based compounds for the control of off-flavor in catfish, 29 stilbene analogues were synthesized and evaluated for algicidal activity against the 2-methylisoborneol (MIB)-producing cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata. The cis and trans isomers of 4-(3,5-dimethoxystyryl)aniline showed moderate and selective algicidal activity toward O. perornata with the lowest observed inhibitory concentration and lowest complete inhibition concentrations of 10 muM. This is the first report on selective stilbene algicidal activity toward a MIB-producing cyanobacteria species.

Abstract
p-Octyloxybenzenethiol (2) was synthesized as a new odorless benzenethiol. Moreover, preparation of thioglycosides using 2 and their application for glycosylation reactions were attempted. As a result, it was found that the thioglycosides were as excellent glycosyl donors as 4-dodecylphenyl 1-thio-glycosides, which were previously reported by our group, and more useful than the previous donors in terms of fine chemistry in glycosylation reaction activated with silver triflate and N-iodosuccinimide (NIS). In addition, this method was applicable to the sialylation with NIS and triflic acid. All procedures from the preparation of thioglycosides to the glycosylation reaction could be attained completely under conditions where no malodor was generated.
