Insights into the Properties and Potential Applications of Renewable Carbohydrate-Based Ionic Liquids: A Review

Carbohydrate-derived ionic liquids have been explored as bio-alternatives to conventional ionic liquids for over a decade. Since their discovery, significant progress has been made regarding synthetic methods, understanding their environmental effect, and developing perspectives on their potential applications. This review discusses the relationships between the structural properties of carbohydrate ionic liquids and their thermal, toxicological, and biodegradability characteristics in terms of guiding future designs of sugar-rich systems for targeted applications. The synthetic strategies related to carbohydrate-based ionic liquids, the most recent relevant advances, and several perspectives for possible applications spanning catalysis, biomedicine, ecology, biomass, and energy conversion are presented herein.

Herbicidal ionic liquids derived from renewable sources

A new family of herbicidal ionic liquids based on d-glucose and MCPA or 2,4-D anions has been synthesized and the physicochemical, surface active and herbicidal properties of the obtained salts were characterized.

DFT studies of conversion of methyl chloride and three substituted chloromethyl tetrahydrofuran derivatives during reaction with trimethylamine

B3LYP/6-31+G** level computations were performed for the formation of four trimethylammonium salts in the reaction of methyl chloride (1a), (S)-1,4-andydro-5-chloro-2,3,5-trideoxypentitol (2a), (2S,5S)-2,5-andydro-6-chloro-1,3,4,6-tetradeoxyhexitol (3a) and methyl 5-chloro-2,3,5-trideoxy-β-D-pentofuranoside (4a) with trimethylamine. All the structures were fully optimized in the gas phase, in chloroform and water. In addition, B3LYP/6-311++G** and MPW1K/6-31+G** level calculations were carried out to estimate activation barrier heights in the gas phase. A detailed description of all stationary points is presented, and the conformational behavior of the THF ring is discussed. B3LYP and MPW1K activation barriers indicate the reaction between methyl chloride and trimethylamine to be the fastest, whereas reaction 4 is the slowest one, both in the gas phase and in solvents. THF ring conformation changes were observed for reactions 2 and 3 along the reaction pathway, whereas it was almost unchanged for reaction 4, in the gas phase. In the case of reactions 2 and 3, different shapes of the THF ring were found for the transition state geometry in the gas phase and in water. The ⁵E→E₄ and ³E→E₅ conformational changes were observed for reactions 2 and 3, respectively.

N,N,N-Trimethyl-N-(methyl 5-de-oxy-2,3-O-iso-propyl-idene-β-d-ribo-furan-osid-5-yl)ammonium 4-methyl-benzene-sulfonate sesquihydrate

The structure of the title compound, [C₁₂H₂₄NO₄][C₇H₇O₃S]·1.5H₂O, contains alternating layers parallel to (001) of hydro­phobic and polar character, stabilized by C—H⋯O hydrogen bonding. The furan ring adopts an envelope conformation with the C(OMe) atom as the flap, and the dioxolane ring is twisted about one of the O—C(methine) bonds. A comparison to related compounds is presented. The tosyl­ate-O atoms were disordered over two positions with the major component having a site occupancy factor = 0.566 (12). The structure was refined as a rotary twin with regard to rotation about the c axis with the contribution of the second component being 0.0048 (6). Solvate water mol­ecules are highly disordered and were removed using the SQUEEZE procedure; the unit cell characteristics take into account the presence of the disordered solvent. High-resolution ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopic data are also presented.

DFT studies of the conversion of four mesylate esters during reaction with ammonia

The energetics of the Menshutkin-like reaction between four mesylate derivatives and ammonia have been computed using B3LYP functional with the 6-31+G** basis set. Additionally, MPW1K/6-31+G** level calculations were carried out to estimate activation barrier heights in the gas phase. Solvent effect corrections were computed using PCM/B3LYP/6-31+G** level. The conversion of the reactant complexes into ion pairs is accompanied by a strong energy decrease in the gas phase and in all solvents. The ion pairs are stabilized with two strong hydrogen bonds in the gas phase. The bifurcation at C2 causes a significant activation barrier increase. Also, bifurcation at C5 leads to noticeable barrier height differentiation. Both B3LYP/6-31+G** and MPW1K/6-31+G** activation barriers suggest the reaction 2 (2a + NH3) to be the fastest in the gas phase. The reaction 4 is the slowest one in all environments.

Analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: an update for the period 2005-2006

This review is the fourth update of the original review, published in 1999, on the application of MALDI mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2006. The review covers fundamental studies, fragmentation of carbohydrate ions, method developments, and applications of the technique to the analysis of different types of carbohydrate. Specific compound classes that are covered include carbohydrate polymers from plants, N- and O-linked glycans from glycoproteins, glycated proteins, glycolipids from bacteria, glycosides, and various other natural products. There is a short section on the use of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for the study of enzymes involved in glycan processing, a section on industrial processes, particularly the development of biopharmaceuticals and a section on the use of MALDI-MS to monitor products of chemical synthesis of carbohydrates. Large carbohydrate-protein complexes and glycodendrimers are highlighted in this final section.
