Abstract
In the present investigation, new formulations of CMCS/AA hydrogels with varying composition of Carboxymethyl chitosan, acrylic acid, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were prepared by free radical polymerization technique using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst. The bioavailability of 5-FU through the oral route is very limited owing to its rapid metabolism and clearance from the general circulation. Current work was aimed at increasing the bioavailability of 5-FU via smart hydrogels and at investigating their potential in delivering 5-FU to target colon cancer. Swelling studies were carried out on dried hydrogel discs in different USP phosphate buffer solutions of various pH values. Porosity and gel fraction of all the samples were measured. 5-FU was used as a model drug and loaded in selected hydrogel samples. The amount of drug loaded and released was determined. Experimental data was fitted to various model equations, and corresponding parameters were calculated to study the release mechanism. Many structural parameters were calculated. The prepared hydrogels were also characterized by FTIR and SEM to study the structure, crystallinity, compatibility, and morphology of the smart hydrogels. The biocompatibility and cytotoxic potential blank and drug-loaded hydrogels were assessed through MTT assay. The prepared hydrogels were found to be an excellent carrier for 5-FU in targeting colon cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present work aimed to design and synthesize pH-sensitive cross-linked Ge/SA hydrogels using different ratios of each polymer, and to investigate the effect of each polymer on dynamic, equilibrium swelling, and in vitro release pattern of cetirizine hydrochloride, which was selected as a model drug. MATERIALS AND METHODS These gelatin and sodium alginate hydrogels were prepared at room temperature through free radical polymerization using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker. These polymeric composites were used as model systems to envisage various important characterizations. The in vitro release pattern of drug was investigated in three different mediums (phosphate buffer solution of pH 1.2, 5.5, 7.5 whose ionic strength was kept constant). Various structure property relationships that affect its release behavior were determined such as swelling analysis, porosity, sol-gel analysis, average molecular weight between crosslinks (Mc), solvent interaction parameter (χ), volume fraction of polymer (V2,s) and diffusion coefficient. The structural, crystallinity, and thermal stability were confirmed using FTIR, XRD, and DSC analysis. RESULTS These hydrogels showed maximum swelling at pH 1.2. Zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Peppas models were applied to demonstrate the release pattern of drug. The release of drug occurred through non-Fickian diffusion or anomalous mechanism. Porosity was found increased with an increase in concentration of both polymers, and porosity decreased when the concentration of the crosslinker was increased. Gel fraction increased with an increase in concentration of SA, Ge, and glutaraldehyde. CONCLUSION The prepared pH sensitive hydrogels can be used as a potential carrier for the sustained delivery of cetirizine hydrochloride.

Abstract
For the delivery of bioactive components to the colon, an oral colon-specific controlled release system coated with a resistant starch-based film through aqueous dispersion coating process was developed. Starch was modified by a high-temperature-pressure reaction, enzymatic debranching, and retrogradation, resulting in a dramatic increase in the resistibility against enzymatic digestion (meaning the formation of resistant starch, specifically RS3). This increase could be associated with an increase in the relative crystallinity, a greater amount of starch molecular aggregation structure, and the formation of a compact mass fractal structure, resulting from the treatment. The microparticles coated with this RS3 film showed an excellent controlled release property. In streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type II diabetic rats, the RS3 film-coated insulin-loaded microparticles exhibited the ability to steadily decrease the plasma glucose level initially and then maintain the plasma glucose level within the normal range for total 14-22 h with different insulin dosages after oral administration; no glycopenia or glycemic fluctuation was observed. Therefore, the potential of this new RS3 film-coated microparticle system has been demonstrated for the accurate delivery of bioactive polypeptides or protein to the colon.

Abstract
We report synthesis, characterization, and drug release attributes of a series of novel pH-sensitive poly(acrylic-co-vinylsulfonic) acid hydrogels. These hydrogels were prepared by employing free radical polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and benzyl peroxide (BPO) as cross-linker and initiator, respectively. Effect of acrylic acid (AA), polyvinylsulfonic acid (PVSA), and EGDMA on prepared hydrogels was investigated. All formulations showed higher swelling at high pHs and vice versa. Formulations containing higher content of AA and EGDMA show reduced swelling, but one with higher content of PVSA showed increased swelling. Hydrogel network was characterized by determining structural parameters and loaded with isosorbide mononitrate. FTIR confirmed absence of drug polymer interaction while DSC and TGA demonstrated molecular dispersion of drug in a thermally stable polymeric network. All the hydrogel formulations exhibited a pH dependent release of isosorbide mononitrate which was found to be directly proportional to pH of the medium and PVSA content and inversely proportional to the AA contents. Drug release data were fitted to various kinetics models. Results indicated that release of isosorbide mononitrate from poly(AA-co-VSA) hydrogels was non-Fickian and that the mechanism was diffusion-controlled.

Abstract
A chitosan material, cross-linked and grafted with N-(2-carboxybenzyl) groups, was evaluated as adsorbent to sufficiently remove both positively charged ions (Cu(II), Ni(II)) and negatively charged ones (Cr(VI), As(V)) from aqueous solutions. After complete characterization study with FTIR, SEM and BET analysis, the evaluation of adsorption was done with experiments at pH range 2-12 and then varying the initial concentrations of ions. Langmuir-Freundlich equation was used to fit the adsorption data and showed maximum adsorption capacities 308 mg/g at 25 °C for copper and 381 mg/g for nickel ions. The adsorption capacity of As(V) was 208 mg/g and 175 mg/g for Cr(VI). Also, a mechanistic (phenomenological) model of adsorption kinetics is employed to fit the kinetic data found using parameters with physical meaning, and clearly understand the process dynamics. The regeneration of adsorbents was presented in ten cycles of reuse (adsorption-desorption), showing the strong reuse potential of the adsorbent used.

Abstract
Anti-washout CaF(2) stabilized C(3)S (F-C(3)S) bone cement was prepared by adding water-soluble carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) to the hydration liquid. The setting time, compressive strength and in vitro bioactivity of the CMCS modified F-C(3)S (CMCS-C(3)S) pastes were evaluated. The results indicate that CMCS-C(3)S pastes could be stable in the shaking simulated body fluid (SBF) after immediately mixed. The addition of CMCS significantly enhances the cohesion of particles, at the same time restrains the penetration of liquid, and thus endows the anti-washout ability. The setting times of the pastes increase with the increase of CMCS concentrations in the hydration liquid. Besides, the compressive strengths of CMCS-C(3)S pastes after setting for 1-28 days are lower than that of the pure F-C(3)S paste, but the sufficient strengths would be suitable for the clinical applications. The crystalline apatite deposited on the paste surface is retarded from 1 to 2 days for the addition of CMCS, but the quantities of deposited apatite are same after soaking in SBF for 3 days. As the result that pure C(3)S paste has shorter setting times than pure F-C(3)S paste, CMCS modified pure C(3)S pastes would have better anti-washout ability. Our study provides a convenient way to use C(3)S bone cement with excellent anti-washout ability when the pastes are exposed to biological fluids. The novel anti-washout CMCS-C(3)S bone cement with suitable setting times, sufficient strengths and in vitro bioactivity would have good prospects for medical application.

Abstract
In the present work crosslinked hydrogels based on chitosan (CS) and acrylic acid (AA) were prepared by free radical polymerization with various feed compositions using N,N methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinking agent. Benzoyl peroxide was used as catalyst. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) confirmed the formation of the crosslinked hydrogels. This hydrogel is formed due to electrostatic interaction between cationic groups in CS and anionic groups in AA. Prepared hydrogels were used for dynamic and equilibrium swelling studies. For swelling behavior, effect of pH, polymeric and monomeric compositions and degree of crosslinking were investigated. Swelling studies were performed in USP phosphate buffer solutions of varying pH 1.2, 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5. Results showed that swelling increased by increasing AA contents in structure of hydrogels in solutions of higher pH values. This is due to the presence of more carboxylic groups available for ionization. On the other hand by increasing the chitosan content swelling increased in a solution of acidic pH, but this swelling was not significant and it is due to ionization of amine groups present in the structure of hydrogel. Swelling decreased with increase in crosslinking ratio owing to tighter hydrogel structure. Porosity and sol-gel fraction were also measured. With increase in CS and AA contents porosity and gel fraction increased, whereas by increasing MBA content porosity decreased and gel fraction increased. Furthermore, diffusion coefficient (D) and the network parameters i.e., the average molecular weight between crosslinks (M(c)), polymer volume fraction in swollen state (V(2s)), number of repeating units between crosslinks (M(r)) and crosslinking density (q) were calculated using Flory-Rehner theory. Selected samples were loaded with a model drug verapamil. Release of verapamil depends on the ratios of CS/AA, degree of crosslinking and pH of the medium. The release mechanisms were studied by fitting experimental data to model equations and calculating the corresponding parameters. The result showed that the kinetics of drug release from the hydrogels in both pH 1.2 and 7.5 buffer solutions was mainly non-Fickian diffusion.

Abstract
beta-Cyclodextrin (beta-CD) hydrogel was prepared in a strong alkali condition using epichlorohydrin (EPI) as a cross-linker, where the molar ratios of EPI to beta-CD were 8:1, 10:1, and 15:1. In order to endow a pH sensitivity to the hydrogel, naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) was loaded in the hydrogel by taking advantage of its hydrophobic interaction with the cavities of beta-CD. The releases of blue dextran (a water-soluble dye) from the hydrogels were promoted, as the pHs of the media increased. When the molar ratio of EPI to beta-CD was lower, the degrees of release were higher, and the pH dependency of the release became more prominent. In fact, the swelling ratio of the hydrogels having a lower molar ratio of EPI to beta-CD was higher. The higher swelling ratio would account for the higher degree of release and the marked pH sensitivity.
