Abstract
Marine oligosaccharides have now been applied in a wide range of industry due to various kinds of physiological activities. However, the oligosaccharides with different polymeric degrees (Dps) differed in physiological activities and applicable fields. So it is promising and essential to separate, purify and structurally characterize these oligosaccharides for understanding their structure-function relationship. This review will summarize the lasted developments in the separation, purification and structural characterization of marine oligosaccharides, including the alginate oligosaccharides, carrageenan oligosaccharides, agar oligosaccharides, chitin oligosaccharides and chitosan oligosaccharides, emphasizing the successful examples of methods for separation and purification. Furthermore, an outlook for preparation of functional oligosaccharides in food biotechnology and agriculture fields is also included. This comprehensive review could definitely promote the utilization of marine functional polysaccharides for food and agriculture.

Abstract
Approximately 30% or more of the total proteins annotated from sequenced bacteria genomes are annotated as hypothetical or uncharacterized proteins. However, elucidation on the function of these proteins is hindered by the lack of simple and rapid screening methods, particularly with novel or hard-to-transform bacteria. In this report, we employed cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) -peptide nucleotide acid (PNA) conjugates to elucidate the function of such uncharacterized proteins in vivo within the native bacterium. Paenibacillus, a hard-to-transform bacterial genus, was used as a model. Two hypothetical genes showing amino acid sequence similarity to ι-carrageenases, termed cgiA and cgiB, were identified from the draft genome of Paenibacillus sp. strain YYML68, and CPP-PNA probes targeting the mRNA of the acyl carrier protein gene, acpP, and the two ι-carrageenase candidate genes were synthesized. Upon direct incubation of CPP-PNA targeting the mRNA of the acpP gene, we successfully observed growth inhibition of strain YYML68 in a concentration-dependent manner. Similarly, both the function of the candidate ι-carrageenases were also inhibited using our CPP-PNA probes allowing for the confirmation and characterization of these hypothetical proteins. In summary, we believe that CPP-PNA conjugates can serve as a simple and efficient alternative approach to characterize proteins in the native bacterium.

Abstract
Honey is a natural product that could be easily adulterated with various cheaper sweeteners. In the present study, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) was applied for the detection of honey adulteration based on oligosaccharide and polysaccharide profiles. MS-based strategy could reveal the presence of polysaccharides with higher degree of polymerization (DP ≥ 13) and abnormal trends of saccharides in adulterated honey samples, which could be used as indicators for the identification of honey adulteration with high-fructose corn syrup and corn syrup. MS/MS-based strategy was proposed to characterize the difference in the composition of oligosaccharide isomers between honey samples and adulterated ones with corn syrup or invert syrup, in which the [M+Cl]- of disaccharides, trisaccharides, and tetrasaccharides were fragmented to give diagnostic product ion pairs. The method is effective and robust for the high-throughput monitoring of honey adulteration, and provides a new perspective for the identification of other high-carbohydrate foods.

Abstract
This review is the sixth update of the original article published in 1999 on the application of MALDI mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2010. General aspects such as theory of the MALDI process, matrices, derivatization, MALDI imaging, arrays and fragmentation are covered in the first part of the review and applications to various structural typed constitutes the remainder. The main groups of compound that are discussed in this section are oligo and polysaccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosides and biopharmaceuticals. Many of these applications are presented in tabular form. Also discussed are medical and industrial applications of the technique, studies of enzyme reactions and applications to chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Red algae (Rhodophyta) are known as the source of unique sulfated galactans, such as agar, agarose, and carrageenans. The wide practical uses of these polysaccharides are based on their ability to form strong gels in aqueous solutions. Gelling polysaccharides usually have molecules built up of repeating disaccharide units with a regular distribution of sulfate groups, but most of the red algal species contain more complex galactans devoid of gelling ability because of various deviations from the regular structure. Moreover, several red algae may contain sulfated mannans or neutral xylans instead of sulfated galactans as the main structural polysaccharides. This chapter is devoted to a description of the structural diversity of polysaccharides found in the red algae, with special emphasis on the methods of structural analysis of sulfated galactans. In addition to the structural information, some data on the possible use of red algal polysaccharides as biologically active polymers or as taxonomic markers are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Sulfated polysaccharides and their lower molecular weight oligosaccharide derivatives from marine macroalgae have been shown to possess a variety of biological activities. The present paper will review the recent progress in research on the structural chemistry and the bioactivities of these marine algal biomaterials. In particular, it will provide an update on the structural chemistry of the major sulfated polysaccharides synthesized by seaweeds including the galactans (e.g., agarans and carrageenans), ulvans, and fucans. It will then review the recent findings on the anticoagulant/antithrombotic, antiviral, immuno-inflammatory, antilipidemic and antioxidant activities of sulfated polysaccharides and their potential for therapeutic application.
