Selective oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde over VSB-5 and isomorphously substituted cobalt VSB-5

Selective Styrene Oxidation Catalyzed by Phosphate Modified Mesoporous Titanium Silicate

Selective oxidation of organics over an efficient heterogeneous catalyst under mild liquid phase conditions is a very demanding chemical reaction. Herein, we first report the modification of the surface of mesoporous silica MCM-41 material by phosphate for the efficient incorporation of Ti(IV) in the silica framework to obtain highly ordered 2D hexagonal mesoporous material STP-1. STP-1 has been synthesized by using tetraethyl orthosilicate, triethyl phosphate, and titanium isopropoxide as Si, P, and Ti precursors, respectively, in the presence of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) under hydrothermal conditions. The observed specific surface area and pore volume of STP-1 were 878 m2g−1 and 0.75 ccg−1, respectively. Mesoporous STP-1 has been thoroughly characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM analyses. Titanium incorporation (Ti/Si = 0.006) was confirmed from the EDX analysis. This mesoporous STP-1 was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the selective oxidation of styrene into benzaldehye in the presence of dilute aqueous H2O2 as an oxidizing agent. Various reaction parameters such as the reaction time, the reaction temperature, and the styrene/H2O2 molar ratio were systematically studied in this article. Under optimized reaction conditions, the selectivity of benzaldehyde could reach up to 93.8% from styrene over STP-1. Further, the importance of both titanium and phosphate in the synthesis of STP-1 for selective styrene oxidation was examined by comparing the catalytic result with only a phosphate-modified mesoporous silica material, and it suggests that both titanium and phosphate synergistically play an important role in the high selectivity of benzaldehyde in the liquid phase oxidation of styrene.

Rational Regulation of Crystalline/Amorphous Microprisms-Nanochannels Based on Molecular Sieve (VSB-5) for Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Rational regulation of the composition and structure of electrocatalysts is crucial to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a new electrocatalyst of nickel phosphate microprism (VSB/NiPO) is developed via a simple solvothermal reaction. The microprism is mainly composed of Versailles-Santa Barbara-5 (VSB-5, molecular sieve) with unique nanochannels, which contribute to accelerating mass transfer and exposing more active sites, thus displaying excellent HER activity. Subsequently, the crystallinity and electronic structure of the framework are modulated by incorporating Fe with the combination of calcination and impregnation. The nanochannels are converted to the amorphous arrangement, and the Ni centers are regulated to the higher valence. The resultant Fe-VSB/NiPO-500 exhibits a low OER overpotential of 227 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 . Interestingly, an integrated electrolyzer assembled by VSB/NiPO(-) and Fe-VSB/NiPO-500(+) performs well for overall water splitting, which requires only 1.487 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 , and remains stable at 100 mA cm^-2 over 100 h. This finding opens a new avenue for developing VSB-5 in the field of electrocatalysis.

Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Thermal, and Catalytic Properties of Eight New Complexes of Metal(II) Formates or Propionates with Imidazole; Relationship between the Carbon Chain Length and Catalytic Activity

In one of our previously published articles, we reported the synthesis, spectroscopic, thermal, and catalytic properties of four new M(II) acetate (where M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) complexes with imidazole. Presented compounds exhibited activity in the reaction on catalytic oxidation of styrene. In this study we have synthesized and investigated properties of analogous compounds, however using formates or propionates of mentioned metal cations instead of acetates. Such an approach allowed us to draw valuable conclusions concerning the relationship between the carbon chain length and catalytic activity, which is an important factor for catalyst modeling. Synthesized compounds have been thoroughly investigated using appropriate analytic techniques: AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometry), FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), and TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). Catalytic properties have been studied under the same previous conditions, using GC-FID (GC-chromatograph equipped with FID detector).

Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Thermal and Catalytic Properties of Four New Metal (II) Complexes with Selected N- and O-Donor Ligands

Four solid compounds with formulae: Co(OAc)₂(Im)·H₂O (I), Ni(OAc)₂(Im)_1.5·2H₂O (II), Cu₂(OAc)₄(Im) (III) and Zn(OAc)₂(Im)·H₂O (IV) (where: Im = 1H-Imidazole) were prepared and characterized by chemical and elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction patterns and FTIR spectroscopy. Catalytic properties of each complex for styrene oxidation reaction were investigated. Furthermore, thermal properties of compounds were studied using the TG-DTG and DSC techniques under dry air atmosphere. Additionally, volatile thermal decomposition and fragmentation products were also investigated using the TG-FTIR spectra in air.

Titania-Catalyzed H2O2 Thermal Oxidation of Styrenes to Aldehydes

We investigated the selective oxidation of styrenes to benzaldehydes by using a non-irradiated TiO₂–H₂O₂ catalytic system. The oxidation promotes multi-step reactions from styrenes, including the cleavage of a C=C double bond and the addition of an oxygen atom selectively and stepwise to provide the corresponding benzaldehydes in good yields (up to 72%). These reaction processes were spectroscopically shown by fluorescent measurements under the presence of competitive scavengers. The absence of the signal from OH radicals indicates the participation of other oxidants such as hydroperoxy radicals (•OOH) and superoxide radicals (•O₂⁻) into the selective oxidation from styrene to benzaldehyde.

Noble metal-free V2O5/g-C3N4 composites for selective oxidation of olefins using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant

Vanadium pentoxide modified graphitic carbon nitride (V2O5/g-C3N4) composites were prepared through a method of wet impregnation and calcination. The obtained samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, electron spin resonance and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. Oxidation of olefins was employed to evaluate the catalytic and photocatalytic activities of the prepared V2O5/g-C3N4 composites. Different weight ratios (1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%) of V2O5 loaded composites were prepared and a 3% loaded composite was found to show optimal catalytic performance for the reaction. This noble metal-free catalyst showed excellent performance in the oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde with high conversion (98.7%) and selectivity (88.4%) under visible light irradiation. A plausible mechanism was proposed for this oxidation reaction with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. Other styrene substrates were also selectively transformed to their corresponding aldehydes with high yields (up to 92%), using such a noble metal-free catalytic system.

Highly selective oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde over a tailor-made cobalt oxide encapsulated zeolite catalyst

A tailor-made catalyst with cobalt oxide particles encapsulated into ZSM-5 zeolites (Co₃O₄@HZSM-5) was prepared via a hydrothermal method with the conventional impregnated Co₃O₄/SiO₂ catalyst as the precursor and Si source. Various characterization results show that the Co₃O₄@HZSM-5 catalyst has well-organized structure with Co₃O₄ particles compatibly encapsulated in the zeolite crystals. The Co₃O₄@HZSM-5 catalyst was employed as an efficient catalyst for the selective oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as a green and economic oxidant. The effect of various reaction conditions including reaction time, reaction temperature, different kinds of solvents, styrene/H₂O₂ molar ratio and catalyst dosage on the catalytic performance were systematically investigated. Under the optimized reaction condition, the yield of benzaldehyde can achieve 78.9% with 96.8% styrene conversion and 81.5% benzaldehyde selectivity. Such an excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the confined reaction environment and the proper acidic property. In addition, the reaction mechanism with Co₃O₄@HZSM-5 as the catalyst for the selective oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde was reasonably proposed.

Study of Two Catalyst Configurations under Microwave Irradiation for the Selective Benzaldehyde Production over Co-ZSM-11 and Fe-ZSM-11

Intensification process by the use of microwave heating was investigated by testing two catalyst configurations on the selective styrene oxidation for benzaldehyde production. The oxidation reaction was studied over Co-ZSM-11 and Fe-ZSM-11 catalysts. Their catalytic activity was evaluated by using these catalysts in two different forms: compacted pellets and fine particles. Thus, two reaction systems were studied under microwave: a batch system with fine particles in suspension (system 1) and a recirculating batch liquid through a fixed bed system comprising the compact catalyst pellets (system 2). Despite a better microwave interaction with the catalyst in the pellet form, the fixed bed configuration did not lead to a significant intensification of the process. At 60°C, the styrene molar conversions by using Co-ZSM-11 catalyst were found to be 33% and 3% for systems 1 and 2, respectively. With fine particles, the catalytic activity was higher since the styrene oxidation was able to occur without significant internal diffusional resistance of the reagents toward the active acid sites of the zeolite structure.

A new layered metal-organic framework as a promising heterogeneous catalyst for olefin epoxidation reactions

A new layered MOF material [Co(Hoba)(2)·2H(2)O] (1) (H(2)oba = 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid)) has been synthesized and used as a highly recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for olefin epoxidation reactions. Both high conversion (96%) and high selectivity of epoxide products (96%) are achieved.
