Abstract
Abstract
We review scientific works carried out on the influence of surface hydrophobicity on activity and product selectivity of supported cobalt and iron catalysts during Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The characteristics of the surface of catalyst support may influence metal-support interactions, which leads to various degrees of metal dispersion and reducibility. Also, these support surface properties may influence the mass transfer of reactants and products at the catalyst active sites and subsequently affects the performance of the catalyst during FTS. Pre-silylated and post-silylated catalysts have been used to study the influence of surface hydrophobicity on the performance of FTS catalysts. The enhancement of FTS activity by hydrophobicity was mainly ascribed to the improved reducibility of metal oxide species. Furthermore, post-silylated supported iron catalysts favoured the suppression of water-gas shift (WGS) reaction, thereby hindering CO2 formation.

Abstract
Supported nanoparticles are commonly applied in heterogeneous catalysis. The catalytic performance of these solid catalysts is, for a given support, dependent on the nanoparticle size, shape, and composition, thus necessitating synthesis techniques that allow for preparing these materials with fine control over those properties. Such control can be exploited to deconvolute their effects on the catalyst's performance, which is the basis for knowledge-driven catalyst design. In this regard, bottom-up synthesis procedures based on colloidal chemistry or atomic layer deposition (ALD) have proven successful in achieving the desired level of control for a variety of fundamental studies. This review aims to give an account of recent progress made in the two aforementioned synthesis techniques for the application of controlled catalytic materials in gas-phase catalysis. For each technique, the focus goes to mono- and bimetallic materials, as well as to recent efforts in enhancing their performance by embedding colloidal templates in porous oxide phases or by the deposition of oxide overlayers via ALD. As a recent extension to the latter, the concept of area-selective ALD for advanced atomic-scale catalyst design is discussed.

Abstract
Metal nanoparticles have attracted much attention over the last decade owing to their unique properties, different to their bulk counterparts, which pave the way for their application in different fields from materials science and engineering to biomedical applications. Of particular interest, the use of metal nanoparticles in catalysis has brought superior efficiency in terms of activity, selectivity and lifetime to heterogeneous catalysis. This article reviews the recent developments in the synthesis routes and the catalytic performance of metal nanoparticles depending on the solvent used for various organic and inorganic transformations. Additionally, we also discuss the prevalent complications and their possible solutions plus future prospects in the field of nanocatalysis.

Abstract
Air-stable magnetic cobalt nanocrystals have been conveniently prepared via a reverse micellar synthesis, followed by a hydrothermal treatment. The synthesis was carried out by first mixing an aqueous solution containing cobalt chloride and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) with an organic mixture containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to form reverse micelles, followed by reducing cobalt ions with sodium borohydride. The resultant nanoparticles were then undergone a hydrothermal treatment at 165 degrees C for 8 h to generate well-dispersed CTAB/PSS-encapsulated cobalt nanocrystals with an average diameter of 3.5 +/- 0.5 nm. The nanoparticles were highly crystalline with a hexagonal close-packed crystal phase. The presence of CTAB/PSS complex coatings was identified by FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopies as well as thermogravimetry analyses. The nanocrystals exhibited superparamagnetic property at room temperature with a saturation magnetization (M(s)) of 95 emu/g. The magnetization could be largely preserved after storage at room temperature for 4 months as the M(s) value only slightly decreased to 88 emu/g (measured at 300 K). Thus, the polymer encapsulation could not only improve thermal stability of the micelles for the growth and nucleation of Co atoms but also protect the resulting cobalt nanocrystals from oxidation through forming an oxygen impermeable sheath.

Abstract
Metal nanoparticles have attracted much attention over the last decade owing to their unique properties as compared to their bulk metal equivalents, including a large surface-to-volume ratio and tunable shapes. To control the properties of nanoparticles with particular respect to shape, size and dispersity is imperative, as these will determine the activity in the desired application. Supported metal nanoparticles are widely employed in catalysis. Recent advances in controlling the shape and size of nanoparticles have opened the possibility to optimise the particle geometry for enhanced catalytic activity, providing the optimum size and surface properties for specific applications. This Review describes the state of the art with respect to the preparation and use of supported metal nanoparticles in catalysis. The main groups of such nanoparticles (noble and transition metal nanoparticles) are highlighted and future prospects are discussed.
