Palladium nanoparticles stabilized by aqueous vesicles self-assembled from a PEGylated surfactant ionic liquid for the chemoselective reduction of nitroarenes

Catalytic reduction of nitroarenes by palladium nanoparticles decorated silica@poly(chitosan-N-isopropylacrylamide-methacrylic acid) hybrid microgels

Conversion of toxic nitroarenes into less toxic aryl amines, which are the most suitable precursors for different types of compounds, is done with various materials which are costly or take more time for this conversion. In this regards, a silica@poly(chitosan-N-isopropylacrylamide-methacrylic acid) Si@P(CS-NIPAM-MAA) Si@P(CNM) core-shell microgel system was synthesized through free radical precipitation polymerization (FRPP) and then fabricated with palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) by in situ-reduction method to form Si@Pd-P(CNM) and characterized with XRD, TEM, FTIR, SEM, and EDX. The catalytic efficiency of Si@Pd-P(CNM) hybrid microgels was studied for reduction of 4-nitroaniline (4NiA) under diverse conditions. Different nitroarenes were successfully transformed into their corresponding aryl amines with high yields using the Si@Pd-P(CNM) system as catalyst and NaBH4 as reductant. The Si@Pd-P(CNM) catalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic efficiency and recyclability as well as maintaining its catalytic effectiveness over multiple cycles.

Ionothermal synthesis of magnetic N-doped porous carbon to immobilize Pd nanoparticles as an efficient nanocatalyst for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds

Carbon materials play important roles as catalysts or catalyst supports for reduction reactions owing to their high porosity, large specific surface area, great electron conductivity, and excellent chemical stability. In this paper, a mesoporous N-doped carbon substrate (exhibited as N-C) has been synthesized by ionothermal carbonization of glucose in the presence of histidine. The N-C substrate was modified by Fe3O4 nanoparticles (N-C/Fe3O4), and then Pd nanoparticles were stabilized on the magnetic substrate to synthesize an eco-friendly Pd catalyst with high efficiency, magnetic, reusability, recoverability, and great stability. To characterize the Pd/Fe3O4-N-C nanocatalyst, different microscopic and spectroscopic methods such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM/EDX, and TEM were applied. Moreover, Pd/Fe3O4-N-C showed high catalytic activity in reducing nitroaromatic compounds in water at ambient temperatures when NaBH4 was used as a reducing agent. The provided nanocatalyst's great catalytic durability and power can be attributed to the synergetic interaction among well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles and N-doped carbonaceous support.

Ionic Liquid-Based Surfactants: Recent Advances in Their Syntheses, Solution Properties, and Applications

The impetus for the expanding interest in ionic liquids (ILs) is their favorable properties and important applications. Ionic liquid-based surfactants (ILBSs) carry long-chain hydrophobic tails. Two or more molecules of ILBSs can be joined by covalent bonds leading, e.g., to gemini compounds (GILBSs). This review article focuses on aspects of the chemistry and applications of ILBSs and GILBSs, especially in the last ten years. Data on their adsorption at the interface and micelle formation are relevant for the applications of these surfactants. Therefore, we collected data for 152 ILBSs and 11 biamphiphilic compounds. The head ions of ILBSs are usually heterocyclic (imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrrolidinium, etc.). Most of these head-ions are also present in the reported 53 GILBSs. Where possible, we correlate the adsorption/micellar properties of the surfactants with their molecular structures, in particular, the number of carbon atoms present in the hydrocarbon "tail". The use of ILBSs as templates for the fabrication of mesoporous nanoparticles enables better control of particle porosity and size, hence increasing their usefulness. ILs and ILBSs form thermodynamically stable water/oil and oil/water microemulsions. These were employed as templates for (radical) polymerization reactions, where the monomer is the "oil" component. The formed polymer nanoparticles can be further stabilized against aggregation by using a functionalized ILBS that is co-polymerized with the monomers. In addition to updating the literature on the subject, we hope that this review highlights the versatility and hence the potential applications of these classes of surfactants in several fields, including synthesis, catalysis, polymers, decontamination, and drug delivery.

Co-Ag alloy protected by nitrogen doped carbon as highly efficient and chemoselective catalysts for the hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes

The design of lower-cost alternative heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes using green method to synthesize the corresponding anilines is highly desirable. In this study, Ag was incorporated into the Co-MOFs during the growing process (Co-Ag(n)-MOFs), and then followed the carbothermal reduction process without any additional procedures, we synthesized a series of Co-Ag(n)@NCs. The self-supported catalysts exhibited excellent and stable catalytic performances for the chemoselective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzenes without obvious dehalogenation. The Co-Ag bimetallic alloy nanoparticles were well-dispersed and protected from aggregation and leaching by the porous nitrogen doped carbon. Besides, either hydrazine hydrate (N₂H₄·H₂O, generating byproducts N₂ and H₂O) or H₂ could be used as green reducing agent with excellent selectivity towards synthesizing the corresponding anilines. And when the Co/Ag content ratio was approximate 1:1, the Co-Ag(1:1)@NC showed the best catalytic performance. Moreover, the Co-Ag(1:1)@NC could be efficiently recovered by using an external magnetic force and reused without obvious decrease of catalytic activity. Thus, such highly efficient, inexpensive, stable and magnetically recyclable catalysts could show great potentials in practical applications for many important reactions.
