Solvent-free selective hydrogenation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene catalyzed by palladium incorporated TUD-1

The surface chemistry of norbornadiene and norbornene on Pd(111) and Pd(100): a comparative DFT study

CONTEXT

The interaction of norbornadiene (NBD) and norbornene (NBE) with the palladium (111) and (100) surfaces have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Five configurations of adsorbed NBD may be formed on Pd(111): endo-tetra-σ, endo-di-σ,π, endo-di-π, exo-di-σ, and exo-π. The NBE molecule adsorbed on Pd(111) may exist in 4 configurations: endo-di-σ, endo-π, exo-di-σ, and exo-π. On Pd(100), a smaller number adsorption configurations of NBD and NBE are formed, since the double bonds of these molecules in the endo-orientation are bound only in a di-σ mode. The adsorption energy of NBD and NBE molecules on Pd(100) is noticeably higher compared to Pd(111), which is due to the surface geometry of Pd(100). The most stable configurations on both Pd facets are endo-tetra-σ for NBD and exo-di-σ for NBE. However, due to smaller adsorption area of the exo-di-σ configuration on Pd(111), a larger number of NBD molecules may adsorbed on the same surface area. Energetically favorable endo-tetra-σ (NBD) and exo-di-σ (NBE) configurations are very mobile on Pd(111). On Pd(100), only NBE molecules can migrate, while NBD migration is hindered due to the high activation barrier.

METHODS

All DFT calculations were performed using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof density functional (PBE) with the relativistic SBK effective core potential and TZ2P basis set in the PRIRODA program.

A ruthenium nanocatalyst for the atmospheric hydrogenation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene

A ruthenium nanocatalyst is utilized for the first time for the highly efficient and selective hydrogenation of 1,5-cyclooctadiene under atmospheric hydrogen pressure. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of 1,5-cyclooctadiene and the selectivity for cyclooctene are >99% and 95%, respectively. The turnover frequency is 451 h−1, which is higher than that ever reported for Ru complex catalysts.

Rhodium Nanoparticles Incorporated Mesoporous Silica as an Active Catalyst for Cyclohexene Hydrogenation under Ambient Conditions

Rhodium (Rh) nanoparticles were embedded in the mesopores of TUD-1 siliceous material and denoted as Rh-TUD-1. Five samples of Rh-TUD-1 were prepared with different loadings of Rh that ranged from 0.1 to 2 wt% using the sol-gel technique. The prepared samples were characterized by means of several chemical and physical techniques. The obtained characterization results show the formation of highly distributed Rh0 nanoparticles with an average size ranging from 3 to 5 nm throughout the three-dimensional silica matrix of TUD-1. The catalytic activity of the prepared catalysts was evaluated in the solvent-free hydrogenation of cyclohexene to cyclohexane at room temperature using 1atm of hydrogen gas. The obtained catalytic results confirm the high activity of Rh-TUD-1, in which a turn over frequency (TOF) ranging from 4.94 to 0.54 s−1 was obtained. Moreover, the change in reaction temperature during the reaction was monitored, and it showed an obvious increase in the reaction temperature as an indication of the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the reactions. Other optimization parameters, such as the substrate/catalyst ratio, and performing the reaction under non-ambient conditions (temperature = 60 °C and hydrogen pressure = 5 atm) were also investigated. Rh-TUD-1 exhibited a high stability in a consecutive reaction of five runs under either ambient or non-ambient conditions.

Solvent-free hydrogenation of cyclohexene over Rh-TUD-1 at ambient conditions

Rhodium nanoparticles (≈3–5 nm) were incorporated into the 3D mesoporous TUD-1 material by using sol–gel technique. The prepared catalyst shows high activity in the liquid phase conversion of cyclohexene to cyclohexane at room temperature (298 K), 1 atm H₂ pressure, and under solvent-free conditions. Rhodium nanoparticles exhibited high stability, reusability and negligible leaching.

Total conversion of cyclohexene to cyclohexane was achieved in a liquid phase hydrogenation reaction at room temperature, 1 atm H₂ pressure and solvent-free system.
