A green methodology for the selective catalytic oxidation of styrene by magnetic metal-transition ferrite nanoparticles

An Investigation of N-Hydroxyphthalimide Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidation of Toluene without Metal Ions in Liquid Phase: Effect of Solvents and Phase Transfer Catalysts

The selective oxidation of toluene to yield value-added oxygenates, such as benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, and benzoic acid, via dioxygen presents a chlorine-free approach under benign conditions. Metal-free catalytic processes are preferred to avoid metal ion contamination. In this study, we employed N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) as a catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of toluene to its oxygenated derivatives. The choice of solvent exerted a significant impact on the catalytic activity and selectivity of the catalyst NHPI at reaction temperatures exceeding 70 °C. Notably, hexafluoroisopropanol substantially enhanced the selective production of benzaldehyde. Furthermore, we identified didecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide, featuring two symmetrical long hydrophobic chains, as a potent enhancer of NHPI for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of toluene. This effect is ascribed to its unique symmetrical structure, extraction capabilities, and resistance to thermal and acid/base conditions. Based on the product distribution and control experiments, we proposed a plausible reaction mechanism. These findings may inform the industrial synthesis of oxygenated derivatives from toluene.

Oxyfunctionalization of Benzylic C-H Bonds of Toluene Mediated by Covalently Anchored Co-Schiff Bases

Oxyfunctionalization of toluene to value-added benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid is of great significance. In this work, Co-Schiff bases were immobilized on commercial silica gel by covalent anchoring, and resulting catalysts were used to catalyze the oxidation of toluene in the presence of the cocatalyst N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). The catalysts exhibited excellent textural and structural properties, reliable bonding and a predomination of the cobaltous ions. The catalyst synthesized by diethylamino salicylaldehyde (EASA) possessed a grafting density of 0.14 mmol/g and exhibited a toluene conversion of 37.5%, with predominant selectivities to benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid under solvent-free conditions. It is concluded that the effect of ligands on their catalytic performance might be related to their electron-donating or -withdrawing properties.

Polyoxometalate-Incorporated Metal-Organic Network as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Aryl Alkenes

Selective oxidation of aryl alkenes is important for chemical synthesis reactions, in which the key lies in the rational design of efficient catalysts. Herein, four polyoxometalate (POM)-incorporated metal-organic networks, with the formulas of [Co(ttb)(H₂O)₃]₂[SiMo₁₂O₄₀]·2H₂O (1), [Co(ttb)(H₂O)₂]₂[SiW₁₂O₄₀]·8H₂O (2), [Zn(Httb)(H₂ttb)][BW₁₂O₄₀]·9H₂O (3) and {[Zn(H₂O)₃(ttb)]₄[Zn₃(H₂O)₆]}[H₃SiW_10.5Zn_1.5O₄₀]₂·24H₂O (4) (ttb = 1,3,5-tri(1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene), were hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Structural analysis showed that compound 1 consists of a POM-encapsulated three-dimensional (3-D) supramolecular framework; compound 2 is composed of a POM-supported 3-D coordination network; and compounds 3-4 show POM-incorporated 3-D supramolecular networks. Using selective catalytic oxidation of styrene as the model reaction, compounds 1-4 as heterogeneous catalysts display excellent performance with the double advantages of high styrene conversion and benzaldehyde selectivity owing to the synergistic effect among POM anions and transition metal (TM) centers. Among them, compound 1 exhibits the highest performance with ca. 96% styrene conversion and ca. 99% benzaldehyde selectivity in 3 h. In addition, compound 1 also displays excellent substrate compatibility, good reusability, and structural stability. Thus, a plausible reaction pathway for the selective oxidation of styrene is proposed. This study on the structure-function relationship paves a way for the rational design of POM-based heterogeneous catalysts for important catalysis applications.

An investigation of two copper(ii) complexes with a triazole derivative as a ligand: magnetic and catalytic properties

Two new copper(ii) complexes [Cu2(L)2(OAc)2(H2O)2] (1) (L = 3-methyl-5-pyridin-2-yl-1,2,4-triazole) and [CuL2] (2) were prerared and thoroughly studied. The complexes are able to selectively catalyze the oxidation of styrene towards benzaldehyde and of cyclohexane to KA oil. The 2D coordination polymer 1 showed an antiferromagnetic behaviour attributed to the intrachain magnetic coupling.

Selective Styrene Oxidation to Benzaldehyde over Recently Developed Heterogeneous Catalysts

The selective oxidation of styrene under heterogeneous catalyzed conditions delivers environmentally friendly paths for the production of benzaldehyde, an important intermediate for the synthesis of several products. The present review explores heterogeneous catalysts for styrene oxidation using a variety of metal catalysts over the last decade. The use of several classes of supports is discussed, including metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, carbon materials and silicas, among others. The studied catalytic systems propose as most used oxidants tert-butyl hydroperoxide, and hydrogen peroxide and mild reaction conditions. The reaction mechanism proceeds through the generation of an intermediate reactive metal-oxygen species by catalyst-oxidant interactions. Overall, most of the studies highlight the synergetic effects among the metal and support for the activity and selectivity enhancement.

Catalytic Performance of a Magnetic Core-Shell Iron(II) C-Scorpionate under Unconventional Oxidation Conditions

For the first time, herein is reported the use of a magnetic core-shell support for a C-scorpionate metallic complex. The prepared hybrid material, that consists on the C-scorpionate iron(II) complex [FeCl₂{κ³-HC(pz)₃}] (pz, pyrazolyl) immobilized at magnetic core-shell particles (Fe₃O₄/TiO₂), was tested as catalyst for the oxidation of secondary alcohols using the model substrate 1-phenylethanol. Moreover, the application of alternative energy sources (e.g., ultrasounds, microwaves, mechanical or thermal) for the peroxidative alcohol oxidation using the magnetic heterogenized iron(II) scorpionate led to different/unusual outcomes that are presented and discussed.
