Iridium catalysed highly efficient transfer hydrogenation reduction of aldehydes and ketones in water

BICAAC-Derived Covalent and Cationic Ir(I) Complexes: Application of Ir(BICAAC)Cl(COD) Complexes as Catalysts for Transfer Hydrogenation and Hydrosilylation Reactions

The ambiphilic bicyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (Me/iPrBICAAC) upon reaction with [IrCl(COD)]2 smoothly afford mononuclear Ir(I) complexes that have been spectroscopically and structurally characterized. These complexes exhibit good catalytic activity for transfer hydrogenation (TH) of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde using isopropyl alcohol (iPrOH), with turnover frequency values ranging between 6269 and 8093 h-1. Choosing the covalent complex Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) as a catalyst, a wide array of carbonyls and imines functionalized with electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents have been surveyed and afforded their reduced products in moderate-to-good yields. No detachment of the BICAAC unit from the Ir center was observed upon prolonged heating of Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) in toluene-d8 or isopropyl alcohol-d8, which evidenced good thermal stability of the catalyst. Complex Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) was also found to be catalytically active for the hydrosilylation of a variety of aldehydes using triethylsilane (Et3SiH).

Recent advances of Cp*Ir complexes for transfer hydrogenation: focus on formic acid/formate as hydrogen donors

Transfer hydrogenation reactions offer synthetically powerful strategies to deliver various hydrogenated compounds with the advantages of efficiency, atom economy, and practicability. On one hand, formic acid/formate function as promising hydrogen sources owing to their readily obtainable, inexpensive, and easy to handle nature. On the other hand, Cp*Ir complexes show high activities in transfer hydrogenation. This review highlights progress achieved for transfer hydrogenation of CO, CC, and CN bonds of a variety of unsaturated substrates, as well as amides focusing on Cp*Ir complexes as catalysts and formic acid/formate as hydrogen sources.

Water-soluble and reusable Ru-NHC catalyst for aqueous-phase transfer hydrogenation of quinolines with formic acid

Water-soluble Ru-NHC complexes were synthesized and their catalytic activity was tested in the transfer hydrogenation of quinoline-type N-heteroarenes using a formic acid/sodium formate buffer solution. The unique multifunctional features of the designed ligand within the catalyst backbone endowed it with excellent durability, reusability and compatibility with a simple aqueous-phase operation. Thus, it was possible to reuse as little as 0.25 mol% of the catalyst for three consecutive catalytic runs to provide an overall turnover number of around 900. A mechanistic investigation suggested that hydride generation was the rate-limiting step, whereas hydride transfer was relatively facile. Furthermore, computational studies supported that the reaction pathway was dominated by 1,4-hydride insertion at the N-heteroarene substrates.

Visible Light Induced Reduction and Pinacol Coupling of Aldehydes and Ketones Catalyzed by Core/Shell Quantum Dots

We present an efficient and versatile visible light-driven methodology to transform aryl aldehydes and ketones chemoselectively either to alcohols or to pinacol products with CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots as photocatalysts. Thiophenols were used as proton and hydrogen atom donors and as hole traps for the excited quantum dots (QDs) in these reactions. The two products can be switched from one to the other simply by changing the amount of thiophenol in the reaction system. The core/shell QD catalysts are highly efficient with a turn over number (TON) larger than 4 × 10⁴ and 4 × 10⁵ for the reduction to alcohol and pinacol formation, respectively, and are very stable so that they can be recycled for at least 10 times in the reactions without significant loss of catalytic activity. The additional advantages of this method include good functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions, the allowance of selectively reducing aldehydes in the presence of ketones, and easiness for large scale reactions. Reaction mechanisms were studied by quenching experiments and a radical capture experiment, and the reasons for the switchover of the reaction pathways upon the change of reaction conditions are provided.

A facile and highly efficient transfer hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes catalyzed by palladium nanoparticles supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride

A novel transfer hydrogenation methodology for the reduction of ketones (14 examples) and benzaldehyde derivatives (12 examples) to the corresponding alcohols using Pd nanoparticles supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4/Pd) as a reusable catalyst and ammonia borane as a safe hydrogen source in an aqueous solution MeOH/H2O (v/v = 1/1) is described. The catalytic hydrogenation reactions were conducted in a commercially available high-pressure glass tube at room temperature, and the corresponding alcohols were obtained in high yields in 2–5 min. Moreover, the presented transfer hydrogenation protocol shows partial halogen selectivity with bromo-, fluoro-, and chloro-substituted carbonyl analogs. In addition, the present catalyst can be reused up to five times without losing its efficiency, and scaling-up the reaction enables α-methylbenzyl alcohol to be produced in 90% isolated yield.
