Tailoring the surface properties of meso-CeO2 for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol

Ceria nanocatalyst-supported oxidative organic transformations of aromatic alcohols andp-nitrotoluene

Hydrothermally derived nanocubes of CeO2(10 nm) were explored as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the partial oxidation of aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and aerobic oxidation ofp-nitrotoluene top-nitrobenzoic acid. The CeO2nanocatalyst was characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. TEM/high-resolution TEM micrographs reveal a morphology of mostly cubic nanostructures with exposed highly active {100} and {110} facets. The surface area of nanoceria was determined by BET analysis and found to be 33.8 m2g-1. To demonstrate the universality of the catalytic system, the selective oxidation of different substrates of benzylic alcohol and complete oxidation ofp-nitrotoluene was investigated under mild conditions. Absolute selectivity towards their respective aldehydes was found to be 99.50% (benzaldehyde), 90.18% (p-chlorobenzaldehyde), 99.71% (p-nitrobenzaldehyde), 98.10% (p-fluorobenzaldehyde), 94.66% (p-anisaldehyde) and 86.14% (cinnamaldehyde). Moreover, the catalytic oxidative transformation of nitrotoluene results in 100% conversion with 99.29% selectivity towards nitrobenzoic acid.

A Perspective on Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Selective Oxidation of Alcohols

Selective oxidation of higher alcohols using heterogeneous catalysts is an important reaction in the synthesis of fine chemicals with added value. Though the process for primary alcohol oxidation is industrially established, there is still a lack of fundamental understanding considering the complexity of the catalysts and their dynamics under reaction conditions, especially when higher alcohols and liquid-phase reaction media are involved. Additionally, new materials should be developed offering higher activity, selectivity, and stability. This can be achieved by unraveling the structure-performance correlations of these catalysts under reaction conditions. In this regard, researchers are encouraged to develop more advanced characterization techniques to address the complex interplay between the solid surface, the dissolved reactants, and the solvent. In this mini-review, we report some of the most important approaches taken in the field and give a perspective on how to tackle the complex challenges for different approaches in alcohol oxidation while providing insight into the remaining challenges.

NiFe2O4 nanoparticles: an efficient and reusable catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under mild conditions

Benzaldehyde is one of the most important and versatile organic chemicals for industrial applications. This study explores a milder approach for the fabrication of NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) for use as a catalyst in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. A co-precipitation method coupled with hydrothermal aging has been adopted to synthesize NiFe₂O₄ NPs in the absence of any additive. Different techniques such as electron microscopy, diffractometry, and photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to characterize the products. The results showed that the synthesized NiFe₂O₄ NPs are spherical, pure, and highly crystalline with sizes below 12 nm possessing superparamagnetic behaviour. The catalytic activity of the synthesized NiFe₂O₄ NPs has been assessed in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under ambient reaction conditions. A conversion of 85% benzyl alcohol with 100% selectivity has been attained with t-butyl hydroperoxide at 60 °C in 3 h. With the optimized reaction conditions, the generality of the newly developed protocol has been expanded to a wide array of substituted benzyl alcohols with good performance. The NiFe₂O₄ nanocatalysts are magnetically separable and are reusable up to five cycles without loss of catalytic activity.
