Red mud-based catalysts for the catalytic removal of typical air pollutants: A review

Red mud, as a solid waste produced during the alumina production, can cause severe eco-environmental pollution and health risks to human. Therefore, the resourcing of this type of solid waste is an effective way for the sustainable development. This paper reviews the recent progress on red mud-based catalysts for the removal of typical air pollutants, such as the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NO_x) by NH₃ (NH₃-SCR) and the catalytic oxidation of CO and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The factors influencing the catalytic performance and the structure-activity relationship have been discussed. Future prospects and directions for the development of such catalysts are also proposed. This review would benefit for the high value-added utilizations of red mud in mitigating atmospheric pollutions.

Advances in air pollution control for key industries in China during the 13th five-year plan

Industrial development is an essential foundation of the national economy, but the industry is also the largest source of air pollution, of which power plants, iron and steel, building materials, and other industries emit large amounts of pollutants. Therefore, the Chinese government has promulgated a series of stringent emission regulations, and it is against this backdrop that research into air pollution control technologies for key industrial sectors is in full swing. In particular, during the 13th Five-Year Plan, breakthroughs have been made in pollution control technology for key industrial sectors. A multi-pollutant treatment technology system of desulfurization, denitrification, and dust collection, which applies to key industries such as power plants, steel, and building materials, has been developed. High-performance materials for the treatment of different pollutants, such as denitrification catalysts and desulfurization absorbers, were developed. At the same time, multi-pollutant synergistic removal technologies for flue gas in various industries have also become a hot research topic, with important breakthroughs in the synergistic removal of NO_x, SO_x, and Hg. Due to the increasingly stringent emission standards and regulations in China, there is still a need to work on the development of multi-pollutant synergistic technologies and further research and development of synergistic abatement technologies for CO₂ to meet the requirements of ultra-low emissions in industrial sectors.

Advances in the treatment of multi-pollutant flue gas in China's building materials industry

In most of the world's building material industries, the control of flue gas pollutants mainly focuses on a single pollutant. However, given the large capacity and high contribution of China's building materials industry to global air pollution, the need to develop multi-pollutant emission reduction technology is urgent. Recently, China has focused on reducing the emissions of flue gas pollutants in the building materials industry, established many key research and development projects, and gradually implemented more stringent pollutant emission limits. This project focuses on the most recent advances in flue gas emission control technology in China's building materials industry, including denitration, dust removal, desulfurization, synergistic multi-pollutant emission reduction, and the construction of pilot research and demonstration projects for pollutant removal in several building material industries. On this basis, revised pollutant limits in flue gas emitted in China's building material industry are proposed.

Like Cures like: Detoxification Effect between Alkali Metals and Sulfur over the V2O5/TiO2 deNOx Catalyst

The V₂O₅/TiO₂ (VTi) catalyst has been widely employed for the NH₃ selective catalytic reduction (NH₃-SCR) reaction, and sulfur (S) and alkali metals (K) were usually considered as poisons during this reaction. In this work, the synergistic effect of S and K over the VTi catalyst for the NH₃-SCR reaction was analyzed and discussed. It is surprisingly observed that the synergistic effects of S and K exhibited a detoxification effect on the NH₃-SCR reaction. That is, although the VTi catalyst exhibited moderate resistance to S poisoning and unsatisfactory resistance to K deactivation, the SCR activity was restored to close to fresh VTi when K and S coexisted. This detoxification effect also could occur between other alkali metals (e.g., Ca and Na) and sulfur. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and charge density difference studies both indicate that the introduction of K could significantly affect the electronic structure of V, but this toxic effect was recovered by the further addition of S because of the strong interaction between S and K. Therefore, this detoxification effect can occur in the practical reaction atmosphere, which alleviates the alkali metal poisoning of commercial catalysts.

Study on NH3-SCR of Cerium-based Substances in Rare Earth Concentrates from Bayan Obo

In this paper, CePO4 and CeCO3F were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis based on the ratio of bastnaesite to monazite in the process mineralogy of Baiyun Ebo rare earth concentrate. A comparison of the two treatments, ball milling and ball milling sulphation, revealed that the denitrification efficiency of the catalysts treated with ball milling sulphation increased by 20 percentage points, compared to those treated without sulphation, with denitrification efficiencies of up to 80%. The surface properties, redox properties and catalytic mechanism of the samples before and after the sulphation treatment were analyzed, by using XRD, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, XPS and in situ IR characterization. The results showed that the CeF3 diffraction peaks in the XRD patterns disappeared in the sulphated samples, NH3-TPD showed that the adsorption capacity of NH3 on the surface of the samples was enhanced, and the introduction of sulphuric acid provided a large number of acidic sites on the catalyst surface, among which the Lewis acidic sites might be more favorable for the promotion of SCR reaction. The acidification of sulphuric acid greatly increases the redox capacity of the catalyst, and the interconversion between Cen+ was enhanced. XPS showed a significant increase in the amount of adsorbed oxygen on the surface of the sample. The presence of -NO2, an important intermediate in the L-H mechanism, was also detected by IR analysis. reactant species during the L-H mechanism reaction were monodentate nitrate, bridged nitrate and NH4 + species produced by NH3 adsorption on the Brønsted acidic site of the catalyst surface.

Insight on the anti-poisoning mechanism of in situ coupled sulfate over iron oxide catalysts in NOx reduction

In situ coupled sulfate uniquely migrated to the surface of iron oxide catalysts to capture metal poisons and thus maintained efficient adsorption and activation of NH3 and NOx reactants.

Study on the mechanism of synthetic (Ce,La)CO3F sulfuric acid acidification and NH3-SCR loaded with Mn and Fe

A hydrothermal method was used to synthesise (Ce,La)CO3F grain simulated minerals, in accordance with the Ce-La ratio of bastnaesite in the mineralogy of the Bayan Ebo process. The NH3-SCR catalytic activity of the synthesised (Ce,La)CO3F was improved by loading transition metals Mn and Fe and sulphuric acid acidification treatments. The activity test results showed that the catalysts which were simultaneously acidified with sulphuric acid and loaded with transition metals Mn and Fe had a NO x conversion of 92% at 250 °C. XRD, SEM, XPS and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to investigate the physical phase structure, surface morphology, reaction performance and mechanism of the catalysts, to provide theoretical guidance for the specific reaction path of cerium fluorocarbon ore in the NH3-SCR reaction. The results showed that the introduction of transition metals and sulphuric acid greatly increases the proportion of adsorbed oxygen (Oα) and facilitates the adsorption of NH3 and NO. The catalyst surface metal sulphate and metal oxide species act as the main active components on the catalyst surface to promoted the reaction, and cracks and pores appear on the surface to facilitate the adsorption of reactive gases. The reaction mechanism of the SO4 2--Mn-Fe/(Ce,La)CO3F catalyst, and characterisation of the adsorption and conversion behaviour of the reactive species on the catalyst surface, were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the catalyst follows the E-R and L-H mechanisms throughout the reaction, with the E-R mechanism being the main reaction. The reaction species were NH4 +/NH3 species in the adsorbed state and NO. The NH3(ad) species on the Lewis acidic site is the main NH3(g) adsorbed species for the reaction, bonded to Ce4+ in the carrier (Ce,La)CO3F to participate in the acid cycle reaction, and undergo a redox reaction on the catalyst surface to produce N2 and H2O. The SO4 2- present on the catalyst surface can also act as an acidic site for the adsorption of NH3. The above results indicated the excellent performance of the SO4 2--Mn-Fe/(Ce,La)CO3F catalyst, which provided a theoretical basis for the high value utilization of bastnaesite.
