Recent progress in the design of photocatalytic H2O2 synthesis system

Photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide under mild reaction conditions is a promising technology. This article will review the recent research progress in the design of photocatalytic H₂O₂ synthesis systems. A comprehensive discussion of the strategies that could solve two essential issues related to H₂O₂ synthesis. That is, how to improve the reaction kinetics of H₂O₂ formation via 2e^- oxygen reduction reaction and inhibit the H₂O₂ decomposition through a variety of surface functionalization methods. The photocatalyst design and the reaction mechanism will be especially stressed in this work which will be concluded with an outlook to show the possible ways for synthesizing high-concentration H₂O₂ solution in the future.

Recent Breakthrough in Layered Double Hydroxides and Their Applications in Petroleum, Green Energy, and Environmental Remediation

The fast development of the world civilization is continuously based on huge energy consumption. The extra-consumption of fossil fuel (petroleum, coal, and gas) in past decades has caused several political and environmental crises. Accordingly, the world, and especially the scientific community, should discover alternative energy sources to safe-guard our future from severe climate changes. Hydrogen is the ideal energy carrier, where nanomaterials, like layered double hydroxides (LDHs), play a great role in hydrogen production from clean/renewable sources. Here, we review the applications of LDHs in petroleum for the first time, as well as the recent breakthrough in the synthesis of 1D-LDHs and their applications in water splitting to H2. By 1D-LDHs, it is possible to overcome the drawbacks of commercial TiO2, such as its wide bandgap energy (3.2 eV) and working only in the UV-region. Now, we can use TiO2-modified structures for infrared (IR)-induced water splitting to hydrogen. Extending the performance of TiO2 into the IR-region, which includes 53% of sunlight by 1D-LDHs, guarantees high hydrogen evolution rates during the day and night and in cloudy conditions. This is a breakthrough for global hydrogen production and environmental remediation.

Inorganic Metal-Oxide Photocatalyst for H2 O2 Production

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) is a mild but versatile oxidizing agent with extensive applications in bleaching, wastewater purification, medical treatment, and chemical synthesis. The state-of-art H₂ O₂ production via anthraquinone oxidation is hardly considered a cost-efficient and environment-friendly process because it requires high energy input and generates hazardous organic wastes. Photocatalytic H₂ O₂ production is a green, sustainable, and inexpensive process which only needs water and gaseous dioxygen as the raw materials and sunlight as the power source. Inorganic metal oxide semiconductors are good candidates for photocatalytic H₂ O₂ production due to their abundance in nature, biocompatibility, exceptional stability, and low cost. Progress has been made to enhance the photocatalytic activity toward H₂ O₂ production, however, H₂ O₂ photosynthesis is still in the laboratory research phase since the productivity is far from satisfaction. To inspire innovative ideas for boosting the H₂ O₂ yield in photocatalysis, the most well-studied metal oxide photocatalysts are selected and the modification strategies to improve their activity are listed. The mechanisms for H₂ O₂ production over modified photocatalysts are discussed to highlight the facilitating role of the modification methods. Besides, methods for the quantification of H₂ O₂ and associated radical intermediates are provided to guide future studies in this field.

Radial TiO2 Nanorod-Based Mesocrystals: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications

Radial TiO2 nanorod-based mesocrystals (TiO2-NR MCs) or so-called “sea-urchin-like microspheres” possess not only attractive appearance but also excellent potential as photocatalyst and electrode materials. As a new type of TiO2-NR MCs, we have recently developed a radial heteromesocrystal photocatalyst consisting of SnO2(head) and rutile TiO2 nanorods(tail) (TiO2-NR//SnO2 HEMCs, symbol “//” denotes heteroepitaxial junction) with the SnO2 head oriented in the central direction in a series of the studies on the nanohybrid photocatalysts with atomically commensurate junctions. This review article reports the fundamentals of TiO2-NR MCs and the applications to photocatalysts and electrodes. Firstly, the synthesis and characterization of TiO2-NR//SnO2 HEMCs is described. Secondly, the photocatalytic activity of recent TiO2-NR MCs and the photocatalytic action mechanism are discussed. Thirdly, the applications of TiO2-NR MCs and the analogs to the electrodes of solar cells and lithium-ion batteries are considered. Finally, we summarize the conclusions with the possible future subjects.
