Abstract
In this work, we studied the effect of alkali-activated zeolite foams modifications on properties and catalytic activity of cobalt phases in the process of catalytic decomposition of N2O. The zeolite foam supports were prepared by alkali activation of natural zeolite followed by acid leaching and ion exchange. The cobalt catalysts were synthesised by a different deposition technique (direct ion exchange (DIE) and incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) method of cobalt on zeolite foams. For comparison, catalysts on selected supports were prepared and the properties of all were compared in catalytic tests in the pellet form and as crushed catalysts to determine the effect of internal diffusion. The catalysts and supports were in detail characterized by a variety of techniques. The catalyst activity strongly depended on the structure of support and synthesis procedure of a cobalt catalyst. Ion exchange method provided active phase with higher surface areas and sites with better reducibility, both of these factors contributed to higher N2O conversions of more than 80% at 450 °C. A large influence can also be attributed to the presence of alkali metals, in particular, potassium, which resulted in a modification of electronic and acid base properties of the cobalt oxide phase on the catalyst surface. The promotional effect of potassium is better reducibility of cobalt species.

Abstract
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an industrial emission that causes the greenhouse effect and damages the ozone layer. Density functional theory study on the N2O direct catalytic decomposition over Cu–ZSM-5 has been performed in this paper. Two possible reaction mechanisms for N2O direct catalytic decomposition over Cu-ZSM-5 were proposed (O2 formation mechanism and Nitric oxide (NO) formation mechanism). The geometrical parameters, vibration frequency and thermodynamic data of the intermediate states in each step have been examined. The results indicate that N2O can be adsorbed on active site Cu in two ways (O-terminal or N-terminal), and N2O decomposition reactions can occur in both cases. The NO formation mechanism exhibits higher N2O dissociation reaction due to lower energy barrier.

Abstract
Although epoxidation of alkenes by N2O catalyzed by Mn-substituted polyoxometalates (POMs) has been studied both experimental and theoretical methods, a complete catalytic cycle has not been established currently. In the present paper, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to explore possible reaction mechanism about this catalytic cycle. Our DFT studies reveal that the reaction pathway starts from a low-valent Keggin-type POM aquametal derivative [PW11O39MnIIIH2O]4-. In the presence of N2O pressure, the formation of the active catalytic species [PW11O39MnVO]4- involves a ligand-substituted reaction about replacement of the aqua ligand with N2O to generation of POM/N2O adduct [PW11O39MnIIION2]4- and dissociation of N2 from this adduct. The calculated free energy indicates that the ligand-substituted reaction is endergonic both in gas phase or various solvents. The partial optimization method reveals that the dissociation of N2 from [PW11O39MnIIION2]4- involves crossing of the quintet state with a low-lying triplet state. Due to the high reactivity, the high-valent MnV-oxo species, [PW11O39MnVO]4-, may react with the excess N2O and alkenes. Thus, two alternative reaction pathways corresponding to activation of N2O and epoxidation of alkenes have been considered in this work. The calculated free energy profile indicates that epoxidation of alkenes pathway is the favorable routes. Finally, a complete catalytic cycle for this reaction has been proposed. The rate-determining step in this catalytic cycle is the dissociation of N2 from the low-valent POM/N2O adduct according to our DFT-M06L calculations.

Abstract
In this review we focus on the catalytic removal of a series of N-containing exhaust gases with various valences, including nitriles (HCN, CH3CN, and C2H3CN), ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), and nitric oxides (NO(x)), which can cause some serious environmental problems, such as acid rain, haze weather, global warming, and even death. The zeolite catalysts with high internal surface areas, uniform pore systems, considerable ion-exchange capabilities, and satisfactory thermal stabilities are herein addressed for the corresponding depollution processes. The sources and toxicities of these pollutants are introduced. The important physicochemical properties of zeolite catalysts, including shape selectivity, surface area, acidity, and redox ability, are described in detail. The catalytic combustion of nitriles and ammonia, the direct catalytic decomposition of N2O, and the selective catalytic reduction and direct catalytic decomposition of NO are systematically discussed, involving the catalytic behaviors as well as mechanism studies based on spectroscopic and kinetic approaches and molecular simulations. Finally, concluding remarks and perspectives are given. In the present work, emphasis is placed on the structure-performance relationship with an aim to design an ideal zeolite-based catalyst for the effective elimination of harmful N-containing compounds.

Abstract
The adsorption of nitrous oxide (N2O) on metal-porphyrins (metal: Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn) has been theoretically investigated using density functional theory with the M06L functional to explore their use as potential catalysts for the direct decomposition of N2O. Among these metal-porphyrins, Ti-porphyrin is the most active for N2O adsorption in the triplet ground state with the strongest adsorption energy (-13.32 kcal/mol). Ti-porphyrin was then assessed for the direct decomposition of N2O. For the overall reaction mechanism of three N2O molecules on Ti-porphyrin, two plausible catalytic cycles are proposed. Cycle 1 involves the consecutive decomposition of the first two N2O molecules, while cycle 2 is the decomposition of the third N2O molecule. For cycle 1, the activation energies of the first and second N2O decompositions are computed to be 3.77 and 49.99 kcal/mol, respectively. The activation energy for the third N2O decomposition in cycle 2 is 47.79 kcal/mol, which is slightly lower than that of the second activation energy of the first cycle. O2 molecules are released in cycles 1 and 2 as the products of the reaction, which requires endothermic energies of 102.96 and 3.63 kcal/mol, respectively. Therefore, the O2 desorption is mainly released in catalytic cycle 2 of a TiO3-porphyrin intermediate catalyst. In conclusion, regarding the O2 desorption step for the direct decomposition of N2O, the findings would be very useful to guide the search for potential N2O decomposition catalysts in new directions.

Abstract
The mechanism of direct oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde by N2O has been theoretically investigated by means of density functional theory over an extra framework species in ZSM-5 zeolite represented by a [(SiH3)4AlO4](1-)[V-O](1+) cluster model. The catalytic reactivity of these species is compared with that of mononuclear (Fe-O)(1+) sites in ZSM-5 investigated in our earlier work at the same level of theory (J. Catal. 2011, 282, 191). The [V-O](1+) site in ZSM-5 zeolite shows an enhanced catalytic activity for the reaction. The calculated vibrational frequencies for grafted species on vanadium sites on the surface are in good agreement with the experimental values. According to the theoretical results obtained in this study the [V-O](1+) site in the ZSM-5 catalyst has an important role in the direct catalytic oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde by N2O.

Abstract
To find an effective strategy for the capture and decomposition of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) is very important in order to protect the ozone layer and control the effects of global warming. Based on first-principles calculations, such a strategy is proposed by the systemic study of N(2)O interaction with pristine and Al (or Ga)-doped graphene, and N(2)O dissociation on the surface of Al (or Ga)-doped graphene in an applied electric field. The calculated adsorption energy value shows the N(2)O molecule more firmly adsorbs on the surface of Al (or Ga)-doped graphene than that of pristine graphene, deriving from a stronger covalent bond between the N(2)O molecule and the Al (or Ga) atom. Furthermore, our study suggests that N(2)O molecules can be easily decomposed to N(2) and O(2) with the appropriate electric field, which reveals that Al-doped graphene may be a new candidate for control of N(2)O.

Abstract
No laughing matter, nitrous oxide's role in stratospheric ozone depletion and as a greenhouse gas has stimulated great interest in developing and understanding its decomposition, particularly through the use of transition-metal promoters. Recent advances in our understanding of the reaction pathways for N(2)O reduction by metal ions in the gas phase and in heterogeneous, homogeneous, and biological catalytic systems have provided provocative ideas about the structure and properties of metal N(2)O adducts and derived intermediates. These ideas are likely to inform efforts to design more effective catalysts for N(2)O remediation.
