Mixed Oxides Derived from Hydrotalcites Mg/Al Active in the Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
Herein, a family of Mg/Al hydrotalcites was synthesized as catalytic precursors of MgAlOx mixed oxides. Both hydrotalcites and mixed oxides were characterized and the mixed oxides were tested in the reduction of furfural to yield furfuryl alcohol by MPV reaction using isopropanol as hydrogen donor. Different catalytic parameters were tested, such as the type of alcohol, calcination temperature of the hydrotalcite, and reaction temperature. Furfural and isopropanol were adsorbed on the MgAl-3 catalyst to follow the species adsorbed on the catalyst by FTIR analysis. The results showed that the isopropanol was activated as isopropoxide and furfural changed the adsorption site with increasing temperature but maintaining the h1-conformation. The catalytic performances were associated with the basicity of the catalysts and the deactivation processes have been attributed to the existence of adsorbed species on the surface, mainly due to furfural-derived compounds. The catalysts were reused in three consecutive cycles showing a sharp drop of catalytic activity. To recover the activity, the catalysts were calcined at 500 °C but the activity was only partially recovered. The XPS analysis after reactivation showed that the catalyst surface was modified due to the segregation of hydroxides of Mg and Al.

Abstract
Catalytic reduction of α,β-unsaturated ketones with MgO has been found to improve selectivity to the desired unsaturated alcohol product. Using the density functional theory, we have studied the competitive hydrogenation of C=O and C=C bonds on Mg(100) employing two α,β-unsaturated ketones: mesityl oxide (MO) and 2-cyclohexenone (CH), with isopropanol (IPA) as hydrogen source. For both ketones, MgO promotes the formation of a six-membered cyclic transition state for selective C=O reductions via a Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley mechanism. Similar concerted mechanism is also possible for the C=C hydrogenation following an Eley-Rideal mechanism, in which IPA interacts directly with the adsorbed ketone. The activation barriers are smaller for C=O reduction because this bond is activated on MgO(100). The selective C=O reduction is more favorable for CH than for MO due to the tendency of CH to be perpendicularly oriented. The desorption energies of the unsaturated alcohol are lower than the subsequent C=C reductions.

Abstract
The activity of the Cr_ZrO2 catalyst is attributed to the Cr–Zr electronic interaction, which resulted in the enhanced surface acidity on ZrO2.

MPV Reduction of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol on Mg, Zr, Ti, Zr–Ti, and Mg–Ti Solids: Influence of Acid–Base Properties. Catalysts 2018. Abstract
The Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley (MPV) reaction is an environmentally-friendly process consisting of the reduction of a carbonyl compound through hydrogen transfer from a secondary alcohol. This work deals with MPV reduction of furfural to furfuryl alcohol on different ZrOx, MgOx, TiOx, and Mg–Ti, as well as Zr–Ti mixed systems. The solids were synthesized through the sol–gel process and subsequently calcined at 200 °C. Characterization was performed using a wide range of techniques: ICP-MS, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, EDX, TGA-DTA, XRD, XPS, TEM, TPD of pre-adsorbed pyridine (acidity) and CO2 (basicity), DRIFT of adsorbed pyridine, and methylbutynol (MBOH) test reaction. ZrOx showed the highest conversion and selectivity values, which was attributed to the existence of acid–base pair sites (as evidenced by the MBOH test reaction), whereas the introduction of titanium resulted in the drop of both conversion and selectivity probably due to the increase in Brönsted-type acidity. As for MgOx, it had a predominantly basic character that led to the production of the condensation product of one molecule of furfural and one molecule of acetone, and thus resulted in a lower selectivity to furfuryl alcohol. The TiOx solid was found to be mainly acidic and exhibited both Lewis and Brönsted acid sites. The presence of the latter could account for the lower selectivity to furfuryl alcohol. All in all, these results seemed to suggest that the MPV reaction is favored on Lewis acid sites and especially on acid–base pair sites. The process was accelerated under microwave irradiation.

Abstract
In this work, the kinetics of Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley chemoselective reduction of carbonyl compounds was studied in monolithic continuous-flow microreactors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the MPV reaction kinetics performed in a flow process. The microreactors are a very attractive alternative to the batch reactors conventionally used in this process. The proposed micro-flow system for synthesis of unsaturated secondary alcohols proved to be very efficient and easily controlled. The microreactors had reactive cores made of zirconium-functionalized silica monoliths of excellent catalytic properties and flow characteristics. The catalytic experiments were carried out with the use of 2-butanol as a hydrogen donor. Herein, we present the kinetic parameters of cyclohexanone reduction in a flow reactor and data on the reaction rate for several important ketones and aldehydes. The lack of diffusion constraints in the microreactors was demonstrated. Our results were compared with those from other authors and demonstrate the great potential of microreactor applications in fine chemical and complex intermediate manufacturing.

Abstract
Dehydrogenative synthesis of esters from primary alcohols proceeded efficiently over a ZrO2-supported copper catalyst. A variety of esters were obtained from primary alcohols as well as diols in good to high yields. The key to the dehydrogenative synthesis of esters is the concerted effect of the acid-base pairs on ZrO2 and metallic copper.
