Hydrogen electrooxidation on PdAu supported nanoparticles: An experimental RDE and kinetic modeling study

Multidimensional Electrochemistry Decodes the Operando Mechanism of Hydrogen Oxidation

Being an efficient approach to the utilization of hydrogen energy, the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is of particular significance in the current carbon-neutrality time. Yet the mechanistic picture of the HOR is still blurred, mostly because the elemental steps of this reaction are rapid and highly entangled, especially when deviating from the thermodynamic equilibrium state. Here we report a strategy for decoding the HOR mechanism under operando conditions. In addition to the wide-potential-range I-V curves obtained using gas diffusion electrodes, we have applied the AC impedance spectroscopy to provide independent and complementary kinetic information. Combining multidimensional data sources has enabled us to fit, in mathematical rigor, the core kinetic parameter set in a 5-D data space. The reaction rate of the three elemental steps (Tafel, Heyrovsky, and Volmer reactions), as a function of the overpotential, can thus be distilled individually. Such an undocumented kinetic picture unravels, in detail, how the HOR is controlled by the elemental steps on polarization. For instance, at low polarization region, the Heyrovsky reaction is relatively slow and can be ignored; but at high polarization region, the Heyrovsky reaction will surpass the Tafel reaction. Additionally, the Volmer reaction has been the fastest within overpotentials of interest. Our findings not only offer a better understanding of the HOR mechanism, but also lay the foundation for the development of improved hydrogen energy utilization systems.

Accelerated Hydrogen "Spill-Over" Enhances Anode Performance of Tensile Strained Pd-Based Fuel Cell Electrocatalysts

Development of efficient electrocatalysts usually relies on half-cell electrochemical tests for rapid material screening, which however are not always consistent with the associated full cell evaluation. This study designs a tensile-strained Pd anode and reveals that with a lower apparent activity toward the hydrogen oxidation reaction as compared to the unstrained one, it exhibits a surprisingly high activity in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). With an ultralow Pd loading of 4.5 µg cm^-2 , the tensile-strained Pd achieves a maximum power density of 1048 mW cm^-2 , indicating a 30-fold improvement in power efficiency than that of commercial Pd/C, nearly four times of that of the unstrained one. This discrepancy can be ascribed to the hydrogen-rich surface in the H₂ atmosphere of PEMFCs owing to the accelerated hydrogen "spill-over" in the tensile-strained Pd with a standout hydrogen storage property.

Hydrogen evolution reaction on palladium multilayers deposited on Au(111): a theoretical approach

We have investigated the electrocatalytic properties of multilayers of Pd epitaxially deposited on Au(111). In contrast to the numerous previous works in this area, we have focused on the kinetics of the electrochemical step for hydrogen adsorption (Volmer reaction) and determined its energies of activation. We have used a combination of density functional theory calculations and our own theory of electrocatalysis, which allows us to investigate the systems in an electrochemical environment. Contrary to our previous work with a submonolayer of Pd in Au(111), the activation barrier for the hydrogen adsorption process from proton is very low or almost zero for all bimetallic systems investigated. It is about 0.2 eV for pure Pd(111). In the case of two layers of Pd on Au(111) containing absorbed hydrogen in the subsurface, the adsorption free energy is less negative and the barrier lower than for the other investigated systems. This is in agreement with experimental data that shows a larger activity for hydrogen oxidation with hydride Pd systems.
