Recent advances in heterogeneous Mn-based electrocatalysts toward biological photosynthetic Mn4Ca cluster

Amorphous mixed-valent Mn-containing nanozyme with cocklebur-like morphology for specific colorimetric detection of cancer cells via Velcro effects

Designing nanozymes with excellent catalytic activity through valence state engineering and defect engineering is a widely applicable strategy. However, their development is hindered by the complexity of the design strategies. In this work, we employed a simple calcination method to regulate the valence of manganese and crystalline states in manganese oxide nanozymes. The oxidase-like activity of the nanozymes was found to benefit from a mixed valence state dominated by Mn (III). And the amorphous structure with more active defect sites significantly enhanced the catalytic efficiency. Moreover, we demonstrated that amorphous mixed-valent Mn-containing (amvMn) nanozymes with unique cocklebur-like biomimetic morphology achieved specific binding to cancer cells through the Velcro effects. Subsequently, the nanozymes mediated TMB coloration through their oxidase-like activity, enabling the colorimetric detection of cancer cells. This work not only provides guidance for optimizing nanozyme performance, but also inspire the development of equipment-free visual detection methods for cancer cells.

Light polarization dependency existing in the biological photosystem and possible implications for artificial antenna systems

The processes of biological photosynthesis provide inspiration and valuable lessons for artificial energy collection, transfer, and conversion systems. The extraordinary efficiency of each sequential process of light to biomass conversion originates from the unique architecture and mechanism of photosynthetic proteins. Near 100% quantum efficiency of energy transfer in biological photosystems is achieved by the chlorophyll assemblies in antenna complexes, which also exhibit a significant degree of light polarization. The three-dimensional chiral assembly of chlorophylls is an optimized biological architecture that enables maximum energy transfer efficiency with precisely designed coupling between chlorophylls. In this review, we summarize the key lessons from the photosynthetic processes in biological photosystems, and move our focus to energy transfer mechanisms and the chiral structure of the chlorophyll assembly. Then, we introduce recent approaches and possible implications to realize the biological energy transfer processes on bioinspired scaffold-based artificial antenna systems.

Kinetics and mechanisms of catalytic water oxidation

The kinetics and mechanisms of thermal and photochemical oxidation of water with homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, including conversion from homogeneous to heterogeneous catalysts in the course of water oxidation, are discussed in this review article. Molecular and homogeneous catalysts have the advantage to clarify the catalytic mechanisms by detecting active intermediates in catalytic water oxidation. On the other hand, heterogeneous nanoparticle catalysts have advantages for practical applications due to high catalytic activity, robustness and easier separation of catalysts by filtration as compared with molecular homogeneous precursors. Ligand oxidation of homogeneous catalysts sometimes results in the dissociation of ligands to form nanoparticles, which act as much more efficient catalysts for water oxidation. Since it is quite difficult to identify active intermediates on the heterogeneous catalyst surface, the mechanism of water oxidation has hardly been clarified under heterogeneous catalytic conditions. This review focuses on the kinetics and mechanisms of catalytic water oxidation with homogeneous catalysts, which may be converted to heterogeneous nanoparticle catalysts depending on various reaction conditions.

Involvement of high-valent manganese-oxo intermediates in oxidation reactions: realisation in nature, nano and molecular systems

Manganese plays multiple role in many biological redox reactions in which it exists in different oxidation states from Mn(II) to Mn(IV). Among them the high-valent manganese-oxo intermediate plays important role in the activity of certain enzymes and lessons from the natural system provide inspiration for new developments of artificial systems for a sustainable energy supply and various organic conversions. This review describes recent advances and key lessons learned from the nature on high-valent Mn-oxo intermediates. Also we focus on the elemental science developed from the natural system, how the novel strategies are realised in nano particles and molecular sites at heterogeneous and homogeneous reaction conditions respectively. Finally, perspectives on the utilisation of the high-valent manganese-oxo species towards other organic reactions are proposed.
