Synthesis and performance of vanadium-based catalysts for the selective oxidation of light alkanes

Opportunities of MXenes in Heterogeneous Catalysis: V2C as Aerobic Oxidation Catalyst

MXenes are two-dimensional nanomaterials having alternating sheets of one atom-thick early transition metal layer and one atom-thick carbide or nitride layer. The external surface contains termination groups, whose nature depends on the etching agent used in the preparation procedure from the MAX phase. The present concept proposes that, due to their composition, the metal-surface termination groups make MXenes particularly suited as heterogeneous catalysts for some reactions. This proposal comes from the consideration that early transition metal atoms bonded to hydroxyl and oxo groups are a general type of active sites in heterogeneous catalysis and that similar catalytic centers can also be present in the MXene structure. After having presented the concept, we have selected V2C Mxene as an example to illustrate its catalytic activity and to show how the catalytic performance varies when the surface groups are modified. As a test reaction, we selected the aerobic oxidation of indane to the corresponding indanol/indanone mixture using molecular oxygen as terminal oxidizing reagent. Two previously reported procedures to modify the surface groups, namely surface dehydroxylation by thermal treatment under diluted hydrogen flow and surface oxidation with ammonium persulfate to convert some surface groups into oxo groups were used, observing in both cases a decrease in the catalytic activity of V2C. Based on this, VIII/IV-OH are proposed as catalytic centers in this aerobic oxidation. Overall, the present concept shows the merits of MXenes in heterogeneous catalysis, based on their chemical composition and the surface functionality.

Preformed Pt Nanoparticles Supported on Nanoshaped CeO2 for Total Propane Oxidation

Pt-based catalysts have been widely used for the removal of short-chain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as propane. In this study, we synthesized Pt nanoparticles with a size of ca. 2.4 nm and loaded them on various fine-shaped CeO2 with different facets to investigate the effect of CeO2 morphology on the complete oxidation of propane. The Pt/CeO2-o catalyst with {111} facets exhibited superior catalytic activity compared to the Pt/CeO2-r catalyst with {110} and {100} facets. Specifically, the turnover frequency (TOF) value of Pt/CeO2-o was 1.8 times higher than that of Pt/CeO2-r. Moreover, Pt/CeO2-o showed outstanding long-term stability during 50 h. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) revealed that the excellent performance of Pt/CeO2-o is due to the prevalence of metallic Pt species, which promotes C-C bond cleavage and facilitates the rapid removal of surface formate species. In contrast, a stronger metal-support interaction in Pt/CeO2-r leads to easier oxidation of Pt species and the accumulation of intermediates, which is detrimental to the catalytic activity. Our work provides insight into the oxidation of propane on different nanoshaped Pt/CeO2 catalysts.

Recent Advances in the Valorization of Biodiesel By-Product Glycerol to Solketal

The exponential rise of the biodiesel production has resulted in a considerable amount of glycerol as a by-product, which must be valorized to ensure the sector’s long-term viability. As a result, cost-effective glycerol conversions for significant value-added chemicals are essential for the biodiesel production in the long run. Solketal, a glycerol by-product, is obtained as a potential fuel additive in the biodiesel industry. Recently, several heterogeneous acid-catalysts stand out as a promising catalyst for solketal production where biomass-based catalyst gained attraction owing to their biodegradability, eco-friendly, and abundant availability. Furthermore, magnetic nanoparticles-derived catalysts along with sulfonated functionalized catalyzed, zeolites, resins, enzymatic, etc. have proved their efficiency in solketal production. In this review, a wider study on the recent advances of the catalysts has been discussed along with their preparation, various reaction parameters, its application, and efficiency for biodiesel industry. This study opens up incredible prospects for us to use renewable energy sources, which will benefit the industry, the environment, and the economy.

Synthesis and oxidation catalysis of a difluoride-incorporated polyoxovanadate and isolation of active vanadium alkylperoxo species

Haloperoxidase-mimetic peroxo-vanadium species on an inorganic support showed catalytic reactivity for the epoxidation and bromination of alkenes. The structures of both native and peroxo forms were determined via single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Selective Oxidation of Isobutane to Methacrylic Acid and Methacrolein: A Critical Review

Selective oxidation of isobutane to methacrolein (MAC) and methacrylic acid (MAA) has received great interest both in the chemical industry and in academic research. The advantages of this reaction originate not only from the low cost of the starting material and reduced process complexity, but also from limiting the use of toxic reactants and the production of wastes. Successive studies and reports have shown that heteropolycompounds (HPCs) with Keggin structure (under the form of partially neutralized acids with increased stability) can selectively convert isobutane to MAA and MAC due to their strong and tunable acidity and redox properties. This review hence aims to discuss the Keggin-type HPCs that have been used in recent years to catalyze the oxidation of isobutane to MAA and MAC, and to review alternative metal oxides with proper redox properties for the same reaction. In addition, the influence of the main reaction conditions will be discussed.

Oxidative processing of propane into important petrochemical products on deposited vanadium catalysts

The paper presents the data on activity of the deposited catalyst based on vanadium. The developed catalyst allows conducting the process of oxidative conversion of propane into ethylene and hydrogen using CO2 as an oxidant. The study of the activity of the developed vanadium catalyst at the oxidative conversion of propane showed that the maximum ethylene yield was 24.5% at: C3H8:CO2=2:1, T=700°C and W=1000 h-1. The increase of temperature to 800°C resulted in the in formation of 27.5% hydrogen. By methods of BET and XRD the developed catalyst 5% V/Al2O3, is differed by increase of specific surface area and bonding of the carrier with active phase, contributing to increase of efficiency of the developed catalyst in the oxidative conversion of propane to ethylene and hydrogen.

Metal Oxides in Heterogeneous Oxidation Catalysis: State of the Art and Challenges for a More Sustainable World

This Review presents current knowledge, recent results, and challenges for the future in heterogeneous oxidation catalysis in liquid and gaseous phases on solid metal oxide catalysts. Metal oxides that are used as catalysts and their main structures and properties are summarized, as well as their catalytic properties in selective and total oxidation reactions, which were studied intensively, experimentally and theoretically, by Professor Jerzy Haber during his scientific life. Some emphasis is placed on the classical and unusual catalyst activation procedures for improving catalytic properties for better efficiency. For a more sustainable world, several examples are given of the oxidation of biomass derivatives to synthesize valuable chemicals and of other applications of metal oxides, such as depollution, photocatalysis, hydrogen production and fuel-cell components. The importance of metal oxide catalysis in environmental and green chemistry and sustainability is discussed, and challenges for the future are considered.

General and Prospective Views on Oxidation Reactions in Heterogeneous Catalysis

In this review paper, we have assembled the main characteristics of partial oxidation reactions (oxidative dehydrogenation and selective oxidation to olefins or oxygenates, as aldehydes and carboxylic acids and nitriles), as well as total oxidation, particularly for depollution, environmental issues and wastewater treatments. Both gas–solid and liquid–solid media have been considered with recent and representative examples within these fields. We have also discussed about their potential and prospective industrial applications. Particular attention has been brought to new raw materials stemming from biomass, as well as to liquid–solid catalysts cases. This review paper also summarizes the progresses made in the use of unconventional activation methods for performing oxidation reactions, highlighting the synergy of these technologies with heterogeneous catalysis. Focus has been centered on both usual catalysts activation methods and less usual ones, such as the use of ultrasounds, microwaves, grinding (mechanochemistry) and photo-activated processes, as well as their combined use.

Catalytic Applications of Vanadium: A Mechanistic Perspective

The chemistry of vanadium has seen remarkable activity in the past 50 years. In the present review, reactions catalyzed by homogeneous and supported vanadium complexes from 2008 to 2018 are summarized and discussed. Particular attention is given to mechanistic and kinetics studies of vanadium-catalyzed reactions including oxidations of alkanes, alkenes, arenes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur species, as well as oxidative C-C and C-O bond cleavage, carbon-carbon bond formation, deoxydehydration, haloperoxidase, cyanation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, ring-opening metathesis polymerization, and oxo/imido heterometathesis. Additionally, insights into heterogeneous vanadium catalysis are provided when parallels can be drawn from the homogeneous literature.

Mechanism of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of organic compounds to carboxylic acids

The results of studies on the mechanism of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of organic compounds of different chemical structure to carboxylic acids are analyzed and generalized. The concept developed by Academician G.K.Boreskov, according to which the direction of the reaction is governed by the structure and bond energy of surface intermediates, was confirmed taking the title processes as examples. Quantitative criteria of the bond energies of surface compounds of oxidizable reactants, reaction products and oxygen that determine the selective course of the reaction are presented.
