Abstract
Metal and metal oxide nanostructured materials have been chemically and physically characterized and tested concerning methylene blue (MB) photoremoval and UV antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In detail, silver nanoparticles and commercial BaTiO3 nanoparticles were modified to obtain nanocomposites through sonicated sol-gel TiO2 synthesis and the photodeposition of Ag nanoparticles, respectively. The characterization results of pristine nanomaterials and synthetized photocatalysts revealed significant differences in specific surface area (SSA), the presence of impurities in commercial Ag nanoparticles, an anatase phase with brookite traces for TiO2-based nanomaterials, and a mixed cubic-tetragonal phase for BaTiO3. Silver nanoparticles exhibited superior antibacterial activity at different dosages; however, they were inactive in the photoremoval of the dye. The silver-TiOx nanocomposite demonstrated an activity in the UV photodegradation of MB and UV inhibition of bacterial growth. Specifically, TiO2/AgNP (30-50 nm) reduced growth by 487.5 and 1.1 × 103 times for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, at a dose of 500 μg/mL under UV irradiation.

Abstract
The fogging of transparent surfaces-condensation of water vapor in the air to a small liquid surface at specific environmental conditions-scatters incident light, creating a blurry vision. Fogging presents a significant challenge in various industries, adversely affecting numerous applications including plastic packaging, agricultural films, and various optical devices. Superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic coatings are the main strategies used to induce antifogging to minimize light scattering. Here, an innovative approach is introduced to mitigate fogging by modifying the surface properties of polymeric films, focusing on corona-treated polyethylene as a model. Coatings were prepared in two successive steps: the addition of radical co-polymerization of methacryloxypropyltriethoxysilane and N-vinylpyrrolidone followed by the step-growth Stöber polymerization of the formed silane monomer. The polymeric dispersion was spread on oxidized films via a Mayer rod and dried. Scanning and force microscopy, FIB, XPS, and UV-vis spectroscopy revealed a thin coating composed of cross-linked siloxane (Si-O-Si) covalently bonded to surface hydroxyls exposing pyrrolidone groups. Contact angle measurements, hot-fog examination, and durability tests indicated a durable antifogging activity.

Abstract
An optical thermometry strategy based on Mn2+ -doped dual-wavelength emission phosphor has been reported. Samples with different doping content were synthesized through a high-temperature solid-phase method under an air atmosphere. The electronic structure of Li4 Zn(PO4 )2 was calculated using density functional theory, revealing it to be a direct band gap material with an energy gap of 4.708 eV. Moreover, the emitting bands of Mn2+ at 530 and 640 nm can be simultaneously observed when using 417 nm as the exciting wavelength. This is due to the occupation of Mn2+ at the Zn2+ site and the interstitial site. Further analysis was conducted on the temperature-dependent emission characteristics of the sample in the range 293-483 K. Mn2+ has different responses to temperature at different doping sites in Li4 Zn(PO4 )2 . Based on the calculations using the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, the maximum relative sensitivity at a temperature of 483 K was determined to be 1.69% K-1 , while the absolute sensitivity was found to be 0.12% K-1 . The results showed that the Li4 Zn(PO4 )2 :Mn2+ phosphor has potential application in optical thermometry.

Abstract
We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of RuO2/TiO2 heterostructures. In the experimental section, mesoporous RuO2/TiO2 heterostructures were prepared by impregnation of mesoporous TiO2 nanoparticles which were synthesized from a new precursor, Na2[Ti(C2O4)3], in an aqueous solution of ruthenium(III) chloride followed by calcination at 300 °C. Using various techniques, the prepared TiO2 and RuO2/TiO2 heterostructures were extensively characterized. The photoelectocatalytic application of the as-prepared heterostructures was then investigated toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results illustrated that RuO2 is dispersed uniformly on the TiO2 surface. The loading of RuO2 on TiO2 decreases the band gap energy and extends the absorption edge to the visible light region. This wide absorption extends the photoelectrocatalytic activity of RuO2/TiO2 heterostructures. To obtain a deeper understanding of the increase of the photoelectrocatalytic activity of RuO2/TiO2 heterostructures compared to pure TiO2, theoretical calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) level were performed on some model clusters of pure TiO2 and the RuO2/TiO2 heterostructure. The theoretical results elucidated that the recombination ratio of electron-hole pairs decreases effectively for RuO2/TiO2 compared to pure TiO2.

Abstract
TiO2 exists naturally in three crystalline forms: Anatase, rutile, brookite, and TiO2 (B). These polymorphs exhibit different properties and consequently different photocatalytic performances. This paper aims to clarify the differences between titanium dioxide polymorphs, and the differences in homophase, biphase, and triphase properties in various photocatalytic applications. However, homophase TiO2 has various disadvantages such as high recombination rates and low adsorption capacity. Meanwhile, TiO2 heterophase can effectively stimulate electron transfer from one phase to another causing superior photocatalytic performance. Various studies have reported the biphase of polymorph TiO2 such as anatase/rutile, anatase/brookite, rutile/brookite, and anatase/TiO2 (B). In addition, this paper also presents the triphase of the TiO2 polymorph. This review is mainly focused on information regarding the heterophase of the TiO2 polymorph, fabrication of heterophase synthesis, and its application as a photocatalyst.

Abstract
Experimental studies have shown the possible production of hydrogen through photocatalytic water splitting using metal oxide (MOy) nanoparticles attached to an anatase TiO2 surface. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to provide a detailed description of the stability and geometry of MxOy clusters M = Cu, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn, x = 1–5, and y = 0–5 on the anatase TiO2(101) surface. It is found that unsaturated 2-fold-coordinated O-sites may serve as nucleation centers for the growth of metal clusters. The formation energy of Ni-containing clusters on the anatase surface is larger than for other M clusters. In addition, the Nin adsorption energy increases with cluster size n, which makes the formation of bigger Ni clusters plausible as confirmed by transition electron microscopy images. Another particularity for Ni-containing clusters is that the adsorption energy per atom gets larger when the O-content is reduced, while for other M atoms it remains almost constant or, as for Mn, even decreases. This trend is in line with experimental results. Also provided is a discussion of the oxidation states of M5Oy clusters based on their magnetic moments and Bader charges and their possible reduction with oxygen depletion.

Abstract
A novel plasmonic Ag/AgCl@LaFeO3 (ALFO) photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a simple in-situ synthesis method with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light for harmful algal blooms (HABs) control. The structure, morphology, chemical states, optical and electrochemical properties of the photocatalyst were systematically investigated using a series of characterization methods. Compared with pure LaFeO3 and Ag/AgCl, ALFO-20% owned a higher light absorption capacity and lower electron-hole recombined rate. Therefore, ALFO-20% had higher photocatalytic activity with a near 100% removal rate of chlorophyll a within 150 min, whose kinetic constant was 15.36 and 9.61 times faster than those of LaFeO3 and Ag/AgCl. In addition, the changes of zeta potential, cell membrane permeability, cell morphology, organic matter, total soluble protein, photosynthetic system and antioxidant enzyme system in Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) were studied to explore the mechanism of M. aeruginosa photocatalytic inactivation. The results showed that ALFO-20% could change the permeability and morphology of the algae cell membrane, as well as destroy the photosynthesis system and antioxidant system of M. aeruginosa. What's more, ALFO could further degrade the organic matters flowed out after algae rupture and die, reducing the secondary pollution and avoiding the recurrence of HABs. Finally, the species of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (mainly •O2- and •OH) produced by ALFO were determined through quenching experiments, and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. Overall, ALFO can efficiently remove the harmful algae under the visible light, providing a promising method for controlling HABs.

Abstract
Increased concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM), a complex mixture of organic substances found in most surface waters, have recently emerged as a substantial environmental issue. NOM has a significant variety of molecular and chemical properties, which in combination with its varying concentrations both geographically and seasonally, introduce the opportunity for an array of interactions with the environment. Due to an observable increase in amounts of NOM in water treatment supply sources, an improved effort to remove naturally-occurring organics from drinking water supplies, as well as from municipal wastewater effluents, is required to continue the development of highly efficient and versatile water treatment technologies. Photocatalysis has received increasing interest from around the world, especially during the last decade, as several investigated processes have been regularly reported to be amongst the best performing water treatment technologies to remove NOM from drinking water supplies and mitigate the formation of disinfection by products. Consequently, this overview highlights recent research and developments on the application of photocatalysis to degrade NOM by means of TiO2-based heterogeneous and homogeneous photocatalysts. Analytical techniques to quantify NOM in water and hybrid photocatalytic processes are also reviewed and discussed.

Abstract
Silicon wafers as semiconductors are essential components of integrated circuits in electronic devices. For this reason, modification of the silicon surface is an important factor in the manufacturing of new hybrid materials applied in micro- and nanoelectronics. Herein, copolymer brushes of hydrophilic poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) and hydrophobic poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) were grafted from silicon wafers via simplified electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (seATRP) according to a surface-initiated approach. The syntheses of PHEA-b-PtBA copolymers were carried out with diminished catalytic complex concentration (successively 25 and 6 ppm of Cu). In order to optimize the reaction condition, the effect of the addition of a supporting electrolyte was investigated. A controlled increase in PHEA brush thickness was confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Various other parameters including contact angles and free surface energy (FSE) for the modified silicon wafer were presented. Furthermore, the effect of the presence of a sacrificial initiator in solution on the thickness of the grafted brushes was reported. Successfully fabricated inorganic–organic hybrid nanomaterials show potential application in biomedicine and microelectronics devices, e.g., biosensors.

Abstract
P-TiOn-VOm nanowires were grown on nickel foam (NF) via a one-pot hydrothermal method and by further vapor deposition/phosphorization method. It was found that low valence states of titanium oxide and deficient-oxygen coexist in P-TiOn-VOm/NF. Furthermore, (TiO1.25)3.07 (denoted as TiOn) and VO (denoted as VOm) possess similar structures and matched facets, and their epitaxial growth leads to the formation of TiOn/VOm heterostructure with a formation energy of -1.59 eV. P-TiOn-VOm/NF possesses good electron conductivity and electrons can be transferred from Ti to V centers, as evidenced by the DFT calculations and the XPS spectra. As a result, the specific capacity of P-TiOn-VOm/NF can reach 785 C g-1 at 1 A g-1 in the potential range of 0-0.55 V vs. Hg/HgO, which is much larger than those of VOm/NF, P-VOm/NF, and P-TiO2-VOm/NF. On the other hand, the TiOn/VOm heterostructure also favors the separation and transfer of photoinduced electrons and holes, and P-TiOn-VOm/NF exhibits visible-light-driven photoresponse. Under visible light illumination, the specific capacity of P-TiOn-VOm/NF is increased by 6.2% relative to that in the dark. Furthermore, the P-TiOn-VOm/NF//activated carbon (AC) asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) shows an energy density of 37.2 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1 kW kg-1 and excellent cycling performance with 93.6% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g-1, which is comparable to and even superior to those of titanium oxides and vanadium oxides. A promising achievement has been proposed to improve the energy storage performance of P-TiOn-VOm through P-functionalization and O-deficiency in this work.

Abstract
A Cu+ and Ga3+ co-doped ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst (Zn(1−2x)(CuGa)xIn2S4) with controlled band gap was prepared via a simple one-step solvothermal method. Zn(1−2x)(CuGa)xIn2S4 acted as an efficient photocatalyst for H2 evolution under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm; 4500 µW/cm2). The effects of the (Cu and Ga)/Zn molar ratios of Zn(1−2x)(CuGa)xIn2S4 on the crystal structure (hexagonal structure), morphology (microsphere-like flower), optical property (light harvesting activity and charge hole separation ability), and photocatalytic activity have been investigated in detail. The maximum H2 evolution rate (1650 µmol·h−1·g−1) was achieved over Zn0.84(CuGa)0.13In2S4, showing a 3.3 times higher rate than that of untreated ZnIn2S4. The bandgap energy of Zn(1−2x)(CuGa)xIn2S4 decreased from 2.67 to 1.90 eV as the amount of doping Cu+ and Ga3+ increased.

Abstract
The band gap controlled photocatalyst (Zn0.74Cu0.13In2S3.805) was prepared via a simple one-step solvothermal method. The effects of doping of Cu+ and excess In on the photocatalytic activity of ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst were investigated. In addition, optical properties, surface morphology and crystal structure were evaluated. The maximum H2 evolution rate (2370 µmol h−1 g−1) was achieved with Zn0.74Cu0.13In2S3.805, which was about five times higher than that of untreated ZnIn2S4 under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). The band gap of Zn0.74Cu0.13In2S3.805 decreased to 1.98 eV by raising the maximum position of the valence band, compared to ZnIn2S4. Furthermore, the recombination of electron hole pairs was effectively reduced. This research contributes to the development of highly active photocatalysts under visible light.

Abstract
The bromo-substituted aromatic dicarboxylic acid 5-amino-2,4,6-tribromoisophthalic acid (H2ATBIP), in the presence of the N-donor flexible bipyridyl-type ligands 1,3-bis(pyridin-4-yl)propane (bpp) and N,N′-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)oxalamide (4-bpme) and ZnII ions, was used as an O-donor ligand to assemble two novel luminescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), namely poly[[(μ-5-amino-2,4,6-tribromoisophthalato-κ2

, (2), using the solution evaporation method. Both (1) and (2) were characterized by FT–IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis (EA), solid-state diffuse-reflectance UV–Vis spectroscopy, and powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex (1) shows a two-dimensional (2D) corrugated layer simplified as a 2D (4,4) topological network. The supramolecular interactions (π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding and C—Br...Br halogen bonding) play significant roles in the formation of an extended three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular network of (1). Complex (2) crystallizes in the chiral space group P212121 and exhibits a novel 3D homochiral framework, showing a diamond-like topology with Schläfli symbol 66. The homochirality of (2) is further confirmed by the solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectrum. The second harmonic generation (SHG) property of (2) was also investigated. The hydrogen and C—Br...Br/O halogen bonding further stabilize the framework of (2). The central ZnII ions in (1) and (2) show tetrahedral and octahedral coordination geometries, respectively. The coordinated and uncoordinated water molecules in (2) could be removed selectively upon heating. Most importantly, (1) and (2) show rapid and highly sensitive sensing for a large pool of nitroaromatic explosives (NAEs).

Abstract
Semiconductor heterostructures are regarded as an efficient way to improve the photocurrent in photoelectrochemical cell-type (PEC) photodetectors. To better utilize solar energy, TiO2@Sn3O4 arrays vertically aligned on carbon fiber papers were synthesized via a hydrothermal route with a two-step method and used as photoanodes in a self-powered photoelectrochemical cell-type (PEC) photodetector under visible light. TiO2@Sn3O4 heterostructures exhibit a stable photocurrent of 180 μA, which is a 4-fold increase with respect to that of the Sn3O4 nanoflakes on carbon paper, and a two-order increase with respect to that of the TiO2 NRs arrays. The evolution of hydrogen according to the photo-catalytic water-splitting process showed that Sn3O4/TiO2 heterostructures have a good photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with the rate of 5.23 μmol h−1, which is significantly larger than that of Sn3O4 nanoflakes (0.40 μmol h−1) and TiO2 nanorods (1.13 μmol h−1). Furthermore, the mechanism behind this was discussed. The detector has reproducible and flexible properties, as well as an enhanced photosensitive performance. Semiconductor heterostructures are regarded as an efficient way to improve the photocurrent in photoelectrochemical cell-type (PEC) photodetectors.![]()
