Tip-grafted Ag-ZnO nanorod arrays decorated with Au clusters for enhanced photocatalysis

Bimetallic Single Atom/Nanoparticle Ensemble for Efficient Photochemical Cascade Synthesis of Ethylene from Methane

Light-driven photoredox catalysis presents a promising approach for the activation and conversion of methane (CH4) into high value-added chemicals under ambient conditions. However, the high C-H bond dissociation energy of CH4 and the absence of well-defined C-H activation sites on catalysts significantly limit the highly efficient conversion of CH4 toward multicarbon (C2+) hydrocarbons, particularly ethylene (C2H4). Herein, we demonstrate a bimetallic design of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and Pd single atoms (SAs) on ZnO for the cascade conversion of CH4 into C2H4 with the highest production rate compared with previous works. Mechanistic studies reveal that the synergistic effect of Ag NPs and Pd SAs, upon effecting key bond-breaking and -forming events, lowers the overall energy barrier of the activation process of both CH4 and the resulting C2H6, constituting a truly synergistic catalytic system to facilitate the C2H4 generation. This work offers a novel perspective on the advancement of photocatalytic directional CH4 conversion toward high value-added C2+ hydrocarbons through the subtle design of bimetallic cascade catalyst strategy.

Fabrication of multiphase MoSe2 modified BiOCl nanosheets for efficient piezo-photoelectric hydrogen evolution and antibiotic degradation

Efficient spatial charge separation plays a crucial role in improving the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, 1T/2H MoSe2/BiOCl (1T/2H MS/BOC) and 2H MoSe2/BiOCl (2H MS/BOC) piezo-photocatalysts are synthesized. By combining piezoelectric catalysis and photocatalysis, a highly active piezo-photocatalytic process is realized. The optimal 1T/2H MS/BOC piezo-photocatalyst displays superior diclofenac (DCF) degradation and hydrogen (H2) evolution activity under the combined action of ultrasound and light. In particular, the DCF degradation kinetic constant (k) of optimal 0.5% 1T/2H MS/BOC under the synergistic effect of ultrasound and light is 0.057 min-1, which is 8.1 and 6.3 times higher than those of BiOCl (0.007 min-1) and 0.5% 2H MS/BOC (0.009 min-1). Moreover, the H2 evolution rate of 0.5% 1T/2H MS/BOC is 122.5 μmol g-1 h-1, which is also higher than those of BiOCl (45.8 μmol g-1 h-1) and 2H MS/BOC (49.5 μmol g-1 h-1). The dramatic improvement in the DCF degradation and H2 evolution piezo-photocatalytic performance of 1T/2H MS/BOC catalysts is ascribed to the built-in polarization electric field and abundance of active sites of 1T/2H MS/BOC as well as the advantageous band structure between BiOCl and 1T/2H MoSe2. Additionally, three probable degradation pathways of DCF were put forward from the results of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study provides the design strategy of high efficiency piezo-photocatalysts in environmental purification and energy-generation fields based on phase and band structure engineering.

Adsorption-enhanced photocatalytic property of Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 composite by incorporating cotton-based biochar

In this study, the biochar obtained from waste cotton fibers was introduced into the Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2 hybrid composite through a facile one-step hydrothermal process. The morphology, elemental composition, crystal structure, microstructure, specific surface area, chemical bonding state, energy band structure, and separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers of the resultant composite were examined using scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, surface area analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscope, and photoluminescence spectroscope. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the biochar, Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2 and Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 were evaluated using the model methyl orange dye. The photoacatalytic degradation of the model pollutants including methyl orange, methylene blue, congo red, and tetracycline hydrochloride and the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) ions were also assessed under visible light. Experimental results indicated that the photocatalytic property of the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 was significantly enhanced through the adsorption enhancement compared with the Ag-doped g-C3N4/TiO2. This was due to the uniform doping of multi-scale porous biochar with g-C3N4 nanosheet, Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles. The adsorptive enhancement induced by the biochar resulted in the narrowed band gap, suitable electronic energy band structure, and fast separation of photoinduced charge carriers of the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2, which was probably due to the coexistence of multi-valence Ti+4/+3 and Ag0/+1 species and oxygen-containing groups of biochar. The major reactive species of the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 were 1O2 and h+. The MO dye adsorption onto the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 followed the Langmuir isotherm model, pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, and the adsorption process was an endothermic reaction with entropy reduction effects. As such, the Ag-doped biochar/g-C3N4/TiO2 exhibited a promising application for the treatment of wastewater containing multi-pollutants especially organic dyes and heavy metal ions.

Recent progress of noble metals with tailored features in catalytic oxidation for organic pollutants degradation

With the increasing serious water pollutions, an increasing interest has given for the nanocomposites as environmental catalysts. To date, noble metals-based nanocomposites have been extensively studied by researchers in environmental catalysis. In detail, serving as key functional parts, noble metals are usually combined with other nanomaterials for rationally designing nanocomposites, which exhibit enhanced catalytic properties in pollutants removal. Noble metals in the nanocomposites possess tailored properties, thus playing different important roles in catalytic oxidation reactions for pollutants removal. To motivate the research and elaborate the progress of noble metals, this review (i) summarizes advanced characterization techniques and rising technology of theoretical calculation for evaluating noble metal, and (ii) classifies the roles according to their disparate mechanism in different catalytic oxidation reactions. Meanwhile, the enhanced mechanism and influence factors are discussed. (iii) The conclusions, facing challenges and perspectives are proposed for further development of noble metals-based nanocomposites as environmental catalysts.

Metal-facilitated Photocatalytic Nanohybrids: Rational Design and Promising Environmental Applications

As a promising technique to potentially address the energy crisis and environmental issues, photocatalysis has been reported widely to exhibit various outstanding behaviors in production of new fuels/chemicals and treatment of contaminants. The photocatalytic performance is extremely dependent on the used photocatalysts, so that the design and preparation of efficient photocatalysts are critically important for significantly improving the photocatalytic activity. Among various strategies, the hybridization of metal with semiconductors has recently been attracting more and more research interest owing to their expended spectral absorption, promoted transferring rate of charge carriers and Plasmon-enhanced effect. In this minireview, the metal-facilitated hybrid photocatalysts are overviewed comprehensively to first reveal unique functions of metals in improvement of photoactivity and summarize the emerging metal-involved hybrid systems. Subsequently, the synthetic methods towards hybrid photocatalysts are introduced and their practical applications are emphasized in environmental remediation including degradation of organic pollutants, conversion of harmful gases, treatment of heavy metal ions and sterilization of bacteria. At the end, the challenges for industrializing these hybrid photocatalysts are discussed carefully and future development is suggested rationally.

The synthesis and structure of the [PdAu13(PPh3)3(SR)7]+ nanocluster

Metal alloy nanoclusters have attracted increasing attention due to the synergistic effect of the foreign atoms. For the first time the synthesis and crystal structure of the [PdAu13(PPh3)3(SR)7]+ nanocluster is reported. The crystal structure of the nanocluster was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The [PdAu13(PPh3)3(SR)7]+ nanocluster has a concave polyhedron Au9Pd kernel, which looks like a girl dancing ballet. The structure shows that [PdAu13(PPh3)3(SR)7]+ has an open shell. Meanwhile, we also carried out ultraviolet-visible (Uv-vis) absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy to study the optical properties of the [PdAu13(PPh3)3(SR)7]+ nanocluster.
