Efficiency enhancement of photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline using reduced graphene oxide coordinated titania nanoplatelet

Streamlined fabrication of AuPtRh trimetallic nanoparticles supported on Ti3C2MXene for enhanced photocatalytic activity in cephalosporins degradation

The escalating prevalence of cephalosporin antibiotics in wastewater poses a serious threat to public health and environmental balance. Thus, it is crucial to develop effective methods for removing cephalosporin antibiotics from water sources. Herein, we propose the use of AuPtRh trimetallic nanoparticles supported on Ti3C2MXene as a photocatalyst for the degradation of cephalosporin antibiotics. Initially, AuPtRh nanoparticles were uniformly grown onto Ti3C2MXene sheets using one-step reduction technique. The prepared AuPtRh/Ti3C2MXene exhibited a complete degradation of cefixime and ceftriaxone sodium, while an impressive degradation efficiency of 91.58 % for cephalexin was achieved after 60 min of exposure to visible light, surpassing the performance of its individual AuPtRh nanoparticles and Ti3C2MXene. The enhanced photoactivity of AuPtRh/Ti3C2MXene was resulted from improved light absorption capacity and efficient generation, separation, and transfer of charge carriers driven by the formation of heterojunction between AuPtRh and Ti3C2MXene. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radicals trapping experiments results revealed that •O2- and h+ are the principal reactive species governing the degradation of cephalosporins. The photocatalyst exhibited excellent stability and could be reused four times without significant loss in efficiency. Our study highlights the potential of MXene composites for environmental remediation, offering insights into designing sustainable AuPtRh/Ti3C2MXene photocatalyst for water pollutant degradation.

Impact of Polythiophene ((C4H4S)n; n = 3, 5, 7, 9) Units on the Adsorption, Reactivity, and Photodegradation Mechanism of Tetracycline by Ti-Doped Graphene/Boron Nitride (Ti@GP_BN) Nanocomposite Materials: Insights from Computational Study

This study addresses the formidable persistence of tetracycline (TC) in the environment and its adverse impact on soil, water, and microbial ecosystems. To combat this issue, an innovative approach by varying polythiophene ((C4H4S)n; n = 3, 5, 7, 9) units and the subsequent interaction with Ti-doped graphene/boron nitride (Ti@GP_BN) nanocomposites was applied as catalysts for investigating the molecular structure, adsorption, excitation analysis, and photodegradation mechanism of tetracycline within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP-gd3bj/def2svp method. This study reveals a compelling correlation between the adsorption potential of the nanocomposites and their corresponding excitation behaviors, particularly notable in the fifth and seventh units of the polythiophene configuration. These units exhibit distinct excitation patterns, characterized by energy levels of 1.3406 and 924.81 nm wavelengths for the fifth unit and 1.3391 and 925.88 nm wavelengths for the seventh unit. Through exploring deeper, the examination of the exciton binding energy emerges as a pivotal factor, bolstering the outcomes derived from both UV-vis transition analysis and adsorption exploration. Notably, the calculated exciton binding energies of 0.120 and 0.103 eV for polythiophene units containing 5 and 7 segments, respectively, provide compelling confirmation of our findings. This convergence of data reinforces the integrity of our earlier analyses, enhancing our understanding of the intricate electronic and energetic interplay within these intricate systems. This study sheds light on the promising potential of the polythiophene/Ti-doped graphene/boron nitride nanocomposite as an efficient candidate for TC photodegradation, contributing to the advancement of sustainable environmental remediation strategies. This study was conducted theoretically; hence, experimental studies are needed to authenticate the use of the studied nanocomposites for degrading TC.

The preparation of three-dimensional flower-like TiO2/TiOF2 photocatalyst and its efficient degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

A kind of high-efficiency photocatalyst of the three-dimensional flower-like TiO2/TiOF2 was synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. XRD, FE-SEM, EDS, HTEM, BET, XPS, PL, and UV-Vis-DRS were utilized to characterize the photocatalyst. The photocatalyst of TiO2/TiOF2 shows a narrow band gap of 2.8 eV. The generation of Ti3+ and an oxygen vacancy (Ov) in the photocatalyst are helpful to increase the absorption of visible light, and to inhibit faster charge recombination by capturing photogenerated carriers. Through the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under simulated sunlight, the photocatalytic activity and stability of the synthesized samples were investigated. The results showed that the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride was 59% only in 0.5 h of dark reaction and 85% in 0.5 h of simulated sunlight. The removal efficiency of the photocatalyst for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of TCH is higher than that of the single TiO2, TiOF2, and Degussa P25. The synthesized three-dimensional flower-like TiO2/TiOF2 has great application potential in the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.

Amino-functionalized mesoporous silica-magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposites as water-dispersible adsorbents for the removal of the oxytetracycline antibiotic from aqueous solutions: adsorption performance, effects of coexisting ions, and natural organic matter

The amino-functionalized mesoporous silica-magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite (A-mGO-Si) was synthesized and used for oxytetracycline (OTC) removal from water. Various factors like the effects of initial concentration, contact time, and influence of pH were investigated. Selective adsorption experiments in connection with coexisting ions and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were also investigated. In this study, humic acid (HA) and tannic acid (TA) were representative of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic DOM, respectively. Results indicated that A-mGO-Si had an adsorption ability for OTC that was relatively greater than that of virgin magnetic graphene oxide (mGO), graphene oxide (GO), Fe₃O₄ particles, and SBA-15 mesoporous silica and also showed a better uptake removal capacity for OTC at low initial concentration in comparison with the other adsorbents. The adsorption behavior of OTC onto A-mGO-Si could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The electrostatic interaction has no influence on the OTC absorbed when the OTC is in an aqueous medium in its zwitterion form (3.22 < pH < 7.46). At high pH, the weak π-π EDA interactions and hydrogen bonding may manifest themselves, hence causing a lower adsorption capacity. The main adsorption mechanisms were plausibly activated by H-bonding, and π-π EDA interactions, while the electrostatic interaction (cation-π interaction) might be the minor adsorption mechanism. Addition of individually exogenous ions (Na⁺, Mg²⁺, NO^-, and CO₃^2-) resulted in a decrease of OTC adsorption due to the emergence of a competitive effect. Considering the presence of HA and TA in mixed solute systems, the DOM was likely to form a stronger interaction system with mGO-Si, thereby resulting in an adsorption level which was more competitive in the process at low aqueous phase concentration of OTC. In contrast to the high aqueous phase, the coexistence of DOM could promote OTC adsorption. The phenomenon may reflect the result that a surface complexation mechanism could achieve in adsorptions.
