Effective catalytic abatement of indoor formaldehyde at room temperature over TS-1 supported platinum with relatively low content

Constructing a Titanium Silicon Molecular Sieve-Based Z-Scheme Heterojunction with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Titanium silicon molecular sieve (TS-1) is an oxidation catalyst that possesses a long lifetime of charge transfer excited state, high Ti utilization efficiency, large specific surface area, and good adsorption property; therefore, TS-1 acts as a Ti-based photocatalyst candidate. In this work, TS-1 coupled Bi2MoO6 (TS-1/BMO) photocatalysts were fabricated via a facile hydrothermal route. Interestingly, the optimized TS-1/BMO-1.0 catalyst exhibited a decent photodegradation property toward tetracycline hydrochloride (85.49% in 120 min) under the irradiation of full spectrum light, which were 4.38 and 1.76 times compared to TS-1 and BMO, respectively. The enhanced photodegradation property of the TS-1/BMO-1.0 catalyst could be attributed to the reinforced light-harvesting capacity of the photocatalyst, high charge mobility, and suitable band structure for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation. In addition, the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by the TS-1/BMO-1.0 catalyst was reasonably proposed based on the band structure, trapping, and ESR tests. This research provided feasible ideas for the design and construction of high-efficiency photocatalysts for contaminant degradation.

Principle on Selecting the Coordination Ligands of Palladium Precursors Encapsulated by Zeolite for an Efficient Purification of Formaldehyde at Ambient Temperature

High-performance zeolite-supported noble metal catalysts with low loading and high dispersion of active components are the most promising materials for achieving the complete oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) at room temperature. In this work, palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) with different sizes were successfully encapsulated inside the silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite framework by using diverse stabling ligands via the one-pot method. Thereafter, the rule on selecting the coordinative ligands for palladium was clarified: more N atoms, a short carbon chain, a smaller branch chain, and bidentate coordination are characteristics of an ideal ligand. Accordingly, the best-performing 0.2Pd@S-1(Ethylenediamine) catalyst exhibited outstanding performance for HCHO oxidation, achieving 100% conversion even at room temperature. High-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR HAADF-STEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the chelate is formed by complexation of Pd2+ ions with ethylenediamine, displaying the smallest spatial site resistance simultaneously with the zeolite synthesis, resulting in Pd located mostly within the 5-membered ring (5-MR) channels of S-1 after calcination, thus limiting the growth of Pd clusters and promoting their dispersion.

Hydroxyl-Decorated Pt as a Robust Water-Resistant Catalyst for Catalytic Benzene Oxidation

In catalytic oxidation reactions, the presence of environmental water poses challenges to the performance of Pt catalysts. This study aims to overcome this challenge by introducing hydroxyl groups onto the surface of Pt catalysts using the pyrolysis reduction method. Two silica supports were employed to investigate the impact of hydroxyl groups: SiO2-OH with hydroxyl groups and SiO2-C without hydroxyl groups. Structural characterization confirmed the presence of Pt-Ox, Pt-OHx, and Pt0 species in the Pt/SiO2-OH catalysts, while only Pt-Ox and Pt0 species were observed in the Pt/SiO2-C catalysts. Catalytic performance tests demonstrated the remarkable capacity of the 0.5 wt % Pt/SiO2-OH catalyst, achieving complete conversion of benzene at 160 °C under a high space velocity of 60,000 h-1. Notably, the catalytic oxidation capacity of the Pt/SiO2-OH catalyst remained largely unaffected even in the presence of 10 vol % water vapor. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited exceptional recyclability and stability, maintaining its performance over 16 repeated cycles and a continuous operation time of 70 h. Theoretical calculations revealed that the construction of Pt-OHx sites on the catalyst surface was beneficial for modulating the d-band structure, which in turn enhanced the adsorption and activation of reactants. This finding highlights the efficacy of decorating the Pt surface with hydroxyl groups as an effective strategy for improving the water resistance, catalytic activity, and long-term stability of Pt catalysts.

N/Ce doped graphene supported Pt nanoparticles for the catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde at room temperature

Pt catalysts with nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (GO) as support and CeO₂ as promoter were prepared by impregnation method, and their catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) at room temperature was tested. The Pt-CeO₂/N-rGO (reduced GO) with a mass fraction of 0.7% Pt and 0.8% CeO₂ exhibited an excellent catalytic performance with the 100% conversion of HCHO at room temperature. Physicochemical characterization demonstrated that nitrogen-doping greatly increased the defect degree and the specific surface area of GO, enhanced the dispersion of Pt and promoted more zero-valent Pt. The synergistic effect between CeO₂ and Pt was also beneficial to the dispersion of Pt. Nitrogen-doping promoted the production of more Ce³⁺ ions, generating more oxygen vacancies, which was conducive to O₂ adsorption. As a result, the catalyst exhibited enhanced redox properties, leading to the best catalytic activity. Finally, an attempt to propose the reaction mechanism of HCHO oxidation has been made.

Catalytic performance and mechanism of bismuth molybdate nanosheets decorated with platinum nanoparticles for formaldehyde decomposition at room temperature

Catalytic oxidation at room temperature is considered as a promising strategy for removal of formaldehyde (HCHO), a widely occurring indoor air pollutant. A series of Bi₂MoO₆ nanosheets were prepared via one-step hydrothermal synthesis in this study, followed by decoration with Pt nanoparticles (NPs). The catalyst with Bi₂MoO₆ support prepared at 180 °C exhibited high and stable activity in catalytic oxidation of HCHO at room temperature. The excellent catalytic performance was attributed to its large specific area and pore volume, high level of surface active oxygen species, high content of metallic Pt NPs, and abundant oxygen vacancies. The good synergy and interaction between Pt and Bi₂MoO₆ promoted electron transfer, and facilitated the adsorption and oxidation of HCHO. The electronic interaction between Pt NPs and Bi₂MoO₆ accelerated the activation of oxygen species due to weakening of the surface BiO or MoO bonds adjacent to Pt NPs. Infrared spectra indicated that dioxymethylene and formate species were the main intermediates of HCHO oxidation. Density functional theory calculations showed that the dehydrogenation of HCO₂, with an energy barrier of 282.1 kJ/mol, was the rate-determining step in catalytic oxidation process. This study provides new insights on the construction of high-efficiency catalysts for indoor formaldehyde removal.

Phosphorus-Doped Activated Coconut Shell Carbon-Anchored Highly Dispersed Pt for the Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Nitrobenzene to p-Aminophenol

Highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles (∼2.5 nm) on phosphorus-doped activated coconut shell carbon (Pt/P-ACC) were synthesized by a two-step impregnation route. Pt/P-ACC showed a high activity, chemoselectivity, and reusability toward the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to p-aminophenol, with hydrogen as the reducing agent in sulfuric acid. The effects of P species on the catalyst structure, surface properties, and catalytic performance were investigated. It was found that the Pt/P-ACC catalyst had an excellent catalytic activity due to its smaller Pt nanoparticles and higher content of surface-active metal compared with Pt/ACC. Besides, the experimental results and in situ infrared studies demonstrated that the interaction effect between the Pt and P species imbued the surface of Pt with an electron-rich feature, which decreased the adsorption of electron-rich substrates (that is, phenylhydroxylamine) and prevented their full hydrogenation, leading to enhanced selectivity during the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to p-aminophenol.

Promoting Effect of Ti Species in MnOx-FeOx/Silicalite-1 for the Low-Temperature NH3-SCR Reaction

Manganese and iron oxides catalysts supported on silicalite-1 and titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) are synthesized by the wet impregnation method for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR), respectively. The optimized catalyst demonstrates an increased NOx conversion efficiency of 20% below 150 °C, with a space velocity of 18,000 h−1, which can be attributed to the incorporation of Ti species. The presence of Ti species enhances surface acidity and redox ability of the catalyst without changing the structure of supporter. Moreover, further researches based on in situ NH3 adsorption reveal that Lewis acid sites linked to Mn4+ on the surface have a huge influence on the improvement of denitration efficiency of the catalyst at low temperatures.
