Z-scheme heterostructure BiOCl-Ag-AgBr with enhanced sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity in simultaneous removal of Cr6+ and phenol contaminants

BiOCl Heterojunction photocatalyst: Construction, photocatalytic performance, and applications

BiOCl semiconductors have attracted extensive amounts of attention and have substantial potential in alleviating energy shortages, improving sterilization performance, and solving environmental issues. To improve the optical quantum efficiency of layered BiOCl, the lifetimes of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and BiOCl reduction capacity. During the past decade, researchers have designed many effective methods to weaken the effects of these limitations, and heterojunction construction is regarded as one of the most promising strategies. In this paper, BiOCl heterojunction photocatalysts designed and synthesized by various research groups in recent years were reviewed, and their photocatalytic properties were tested. Among them, direct Z-scheme and S-scheme photocatalysts have high redox potentials and intense redox capabilities. Hence, they exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the applications of BiOCl heterojunctions for pollutant degradation, CO₂ reduction, water splitting, N₂ fixation, organic synthesis, and tumor ablation are also reviewed. Finally, we summarize research on the BiOCl heterojunctions and put forth new insights on overcoming their present limitations.

Construction of Z-scheme Ag-AgBr/Bi2O2CO3/CNT heterojunctions with remarkable photocatalytic performance using carbon nanotubes as efficient electronic mediators

It is a useful strategy to use a solid electronic mediator with good conductivity to assist the separation of semiconductor photo-induced electron-hole pairs and the redox of semiconductor materials. In order to construct a photocatalyst for more efficient photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, a simple hydrothermal and precipitation method was used to construct the Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT Z-scheme heterojunction by using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electronic mediators. Compared with the pristine AgBr, Bi₂O₂CO₃, Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT, the 30%Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT photocatalyst has better photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, showing the best degradation ability to tetracycline (TC). Meanwhile, the photocatalytic properties of 30%Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT in different pH and inorganic ions were studied. Finally, the degradation pathway and catalytic mechanism of 30%Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT photocatalytic degradation of TC were also argued. The construction of the Z-scheme electron transport pathway, in which CNTs were used as electronic mediators, and the SPR effect of Ag and Bi metal, which enable the effective separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, are responsible for the significant improvement in photocatalytic performance. It opens up new possibilities for designing and developing high-efficiency photocatalysts with CNTs as the electronic mediator.

Halides and oxyhalides-based photocatalysts for abatement of organic water contaminants - An overview

Recently, halides (silver halides, AgX; perosvkite halides, ABX₃) and oxyhalides (bismuth oxyhalides, BiOX) based nanomaterials are noticeable photocatalysts in the degradation of organic water pollutants. Therefore, we review the recent reports to explore improvement strategies adopted in AgX, ABX₃ and BiOX (X = Cl, Br and I)-based photocatalysts in water pollution remediation. Herein, the photocatalytic degradation performances of each type of these photocatalysts were discussed. Strategies such as tailoring the morphology, crystallographic facet exposure, surface area, band structure, and creation of surface defects to improve photocatalytic activities of pure halides and BiOCl photocatalysts are emphasized. Other strategies like metal ion and/or non-metal doping and construction of composites, adopted in these photocatalysts were also reviewed. Furthermore, the way of production of active radicals by these photocatalysts under ultraviolet/visible light source is highlighted. The deciding factors such as structure of pollutant, light sources and other parameters on the photocatalytic performances of these materials were also explored. Based on this literature survey, the need of further research on AgX, ABX₃ and BiOX-based photocatalysts were suggested. This review might be beneficial for researchers who are working in halides and oxyhalides-based photocatalysis for water treatment.

Facilitating charge transfer through an atomic coherent interface of a novel direct Z-scheme BiVO4@Cu3SnS4 heterojunction to boost photocatalytic performance

Direct Z-scheme photocatalytic systems are very promising composite photocatalysts, and their photocatalytic performance is highly associated with the quality of the interface within them. Herein, a novel direct Z-scheme heterojunction with a coherent interface has been presented for the first time. Specifically, the heterojunction was constructed by dispersing pre-prepared BiVO₄ crystals into the reaction system to synthesize Cu₃SnS₄, followed by a hydrothermal reaction. It is shown that Cu₃SnS₄ was deposited on the surface of each pre-prepared BiVO₄ crystal as a thin layer via heterogeneous nucleation to acquire a core-shell heterojunction. The BiVO₄@Cu₃SnS₄ heterojunction was found to possess an atomic coherent interface, which is formed through the bonding between the (121) plane of BiVO₄ and the (112) plane of Cu₃SnS₄, originating from the matching in the crystalline lattice between the two planes. The coherent interface facilitated the charge transfer from Cu₃SnS₄ to BiVO₄ owing to the difference in their Fermi levels, thereby forming a built-in electric field pointing from Cu₃SnS₄ to BiVO₄. Reduced fluorescence emission and a shortened carrier lifetime reveal an obvious reduction in the inter-band charge recombination for the optimal BVO@CTS-0.19 sample. Consequently, BVO@CTS-0.19 shows remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance in MO degradation, Cr⁶⁺ reduction and oxygen evolution. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism for BVO@CTS-0.19 was verified by a suite of techniques. This work provides a universal strategy for building a coherent interface to develop high-performance direct Z-scheme heterojunctions.

S-Scheme BiOCl/MoSe2 Heterostructure with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Dyes and Antibiotics Degradation under Sunlight Irradiation

Semiconductor photocatalysis is considered to be a promising technique to completely eliminate the organic pollutants in wastewater. Recently, S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts have received much attention due to their high solar efficiency, superior transfer efficiency of charge carriers, and strong redox ability. Herein, we fabricated an S-scheme heterostructure BiOCl/MoSe₂ by loading MoSe₂ nanosheets on the surface of BiOCl microcrystals, using a solvothermal method. The microstructures, light absorption, and photoelectrochemical performances of the samples were characterized by the means of SEM, TEM, XRD, transient photocurrents, electrochemical impedance, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The photocatalytic activities of BiOCl, MoSe₂, and the BiOCl/MoSe₂ samples with different MoSe₂ contents were evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and antibiotic sulfadiazine (SD) under simulated sunlight irradiation. It was found that BiOCl/MoSe₂ displayed an evidently enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to single BiOCl and MoSe₂, and 30 wt.% was an optimal loading amount for obtaining the highest photocatalytic activity. On the basis of radical trapping experiments and energy level analyses, it was deduced that BiOCl/MoSe₂ follows an S-scheme charge transfer pathway and •O₂⁻, •OH, and h⁺ all take part in the degradation of organic pollutants.
