Conversion of glycerol to hydroxyacetone over Cu and Ni catalysts

Buffering Donor Shuttles in Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Kinetics for Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Hydroxyacetone to Propylene Glycol

Electrochemical hydrogenation reactions demand rapid proton-coupled electron transfer at the electrode surface, the kinetics of which depend closely on pH. Buffer electrolytes are extensively employed to regulate pH over a wide range. However, the specific role of buffer species should be taken into account when interpreting the intrinsic pH dependence, which is easily overlooked in the current research. Herein, we report the electrochemical hydrogenation of hydroxyacetone, derived from glycerol feedstock, to propylene glycol with a faradaic efficiency of 56 ± 5% on a polycrystalline Cu electrode. The reaction activities are comparable in citrate, phosphate, and borate buffer electrolytes, encompassing different buffer identities and pH. The electrokinetic profile reveals that citrate is a site-blocking adsorbate on the Cu surface, thereby decreasing buffer concentration and increasing pH will enhance the reaction rate; phosphate is an explicit proton donor, which promotes the interfacial rate by increasing buffer concentration and decreasing pH, while borate is an innocent buffer, which can be used to investigate the intrinsic pH effect. Combined with in situ SEIRAS, we demonstrate that water is the primary proton source in citrate and borate electrolytes, reiterating the rationality of the proposed mechanism based on the microkinetic modeling. Our results emphasize the intrinsic complexity of the buffer system on the kinetic activity for electrocatalysis. It calls for special care when we diagnose the mechanistic pathway in buffer electrolytes convoluted by different buffer identities and pH.

Cu/ZrO2 Catalyst Modified with Y2O3 for Effective and Stable Dehydration of Glycerol to Acetol

Glycerol is a main by-product of biodiesel production, and its further processing is essential for the biorefinery. In this paper, a highly active and stable catalyst for the catalytic dehydration of glycerol to acetol is obtained by modifying a Cu-Zr (ZrO2 supported Cu) catalyst with Y2O3 using a co-precipitation method. It is found that the addition of Y2O3 effectively enhances the catalytic performance of Cu-Zr. Cu-Zr reaches the highest selectivity (82.4%) to acetol at 24 h. However, the selectivity decreases to 70.1% at 36 h. The conversion also decreases from 99.2 to 91.1%. Cu-Zr-Y exhibits very high activity and very good stability. During a 250 h reaction, no deactivation is observed, and the conversion and selectivity remains ~100% and ~85%, respectively. The catalysts are characterized by XRD, TEM, H2-TPR, and NH3-TPD. The results reveal that Y2O3 not only improves the dispersion of Cu and the acidity of the catalyst but also restrains the agglomeration of Cu particles and assists retaining the main structure of support under reaction conditions. The high dispersion, high acidity content, and stable structure contributes to the excellent catalytic performance of Cu-Zr-Y.

Photoinduced Biomimetic Room-Temperature C-O Bond Cleavage over Mn Doped CdS

Selective C-O bond cleavage is an efficient way for the biomass valorization to value-added chemicals, but is challenged to be operated at room temperature via conventional thermal catalysis. Herein, inspired from the DNA biosynthesis which involves a radical-mediated spin-center shift (SCS) C-O bond cleavage process, we report a biomimetic room-temperature C-O bond cleavage of vicinal diol (HOCHCH-OH). We construct a Mn doped CdS (Mn/CdS) as a photocatalyst to mimic the biologic SCS process. The Mn site plays pivotal role: (1) accelerates the photo-induced carrier separation, promoting the hole-mediated C-H bond cleavage to generate carbon-centered radicals, and (2) serves as the binding site for -OH groups, making it to be an easier leaving group. Mn/CdS achieves 0.28 mmol gcat -1  h-1 of hydroxyacetone (HA) from glycerol dehydration at room temperature under visible light irradiation, which is 3.5-fold that over pristine CdS and 40-fold that over bulk MnS/CdS. This study provides a new biomimetic room-temperature C-O bond cleavage process, which is promising for the biomass valorization.

Recovery and utilization of crude glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct

Biodiesel production has increased significantly in the past decade because it has been demonstrated to be a viable alternative and renewable fuel. Consequently, the production of crude glycerol, the main byproduct of the transesterification of lipids to biodiesel, has risen as well. Therefore, the effective recovery and utilization of crude glycerol can provide biodiesel with additional value. In this review, we first summarized the state-of-the-art progress on crude glycerol recovery and purification. Subsequently, numerous approaches have been reviewed for the utilization of crude glycerol, including use as animal feeds, for combustion, anaerobic fermentation, and chemical conversion. Finally, an extensive discussion and outlook is presented in relation to the techniques and processes in the chemical conversion of crude glycerol.
