Addition of SnO2 over an oxygen deficient zirconium oxide (ZrxOy) and its catalytic evaluation for the photodegradation of phenol in water

Oxygen-Deficient Bioceramics: Combination of Diagnosis, Therapy, and Regeneration

The journey of ceramics in medicine has been synchronized with an evolution from the first generation-alumina, zirconia, etc.-to the third -3D scaffolds. There is an up-and-coming member called oxygen-deficient or colored bioceramics, which have recently found their way through biomedical applications. The oxygen vacancy steers the light absorption toward visible and near infrared regions, making the colored bioceramics multifunctional-therapeutic, diagnostic, and regenerative. Oxygen-deficient bioceramics are capable of turning light into heat and reactive oxygen species for photothermal and photodynamic therapies, respectively, and concomitantly yield infrared and photoacoustic images. Different types of oxygen-deficient bioceramics have been recently developed through various synthesis routes. Some of them like TiO2- x , MoO3- x , and WOx have been more investigated for biomedical applications, whereas the rest have yet to be scrutinized. The most prominent advantage of these bioceramics over the other biomaterials is their multifunctionality endowed with a change in the microstructure. There are some challenges ahead of this category discussed at the end of the present review. By shedding light on this recently born bioceramics subcategory, it is believed that the field will undergo a big step further as these platforms are naturally multifunctional.

Preparation of dual-use GPTES@ZnO photocatalyst from waste warm filter cake and evaluation of its synergic photocatalytic degradation for air-water purification

Organic pollutants are the most critical threats to the health of air and water resources. On this basis, fabricating a photocatalytic acrylic film with dual-use (i.e. removing benzene from air and MB/MO dyes from water) was aimed in this research. For this purpose, waste warm filter cake (WWFC) was used to extract zinc from it. Zinc element was separated from WWFC by a basic leaching method and acidified to prepare zinc oxide nanoparticles. In the following, a simple hydrothermal method was used to increase the surface functionality of the extracted ZnO nanoparticles in order to establish active reaction sites for reaction to silane coupling agent and increase in the holes that were prepared during photo-excitation. Thereafter, the nanoparticles were modified with 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPTES) at different concentrations. The band gap of the modified nanoparticles decreased from 3.25 to 3.1 eV by surface modification. The photocatalytic performance of ZnO nanoparticles was assessed by degradation of MB and MO aqueous solution (50 ppm) under simulated UV/Visible irradiations. MB and MO were degraded 91 and 60% under UV light and 65 and 50% under visible light after 150 min of irradiation. The photo degradation rate increased after adding carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) surfactant to methylene blue and adding cocamide-dea (CDE-G) surfactant to methyl orange. The results confirmed that the green surfactants improve the dispersion and surface interaction of the modified nanoparticles in the dyes solution and cause more electron charge transfer which creates effective photocatalytic sites. The prepared nanocomposite films were placed in a photo-reactor to remove gaseous benzene from air under UV/visible irradiation. Gas chromatography (GC) results showed that the modified nanoparticles removed up to 35.25 and 20.34% of benzene from air. Colorimetric analysis (ΔE*) showed that the acrylic film contained modified nanoparticles degraded 91 and 82% of MB, and 85 and 76% of MO under UV/visible lights, respectively. In the end, it can be said that these photocatalytic films are able to remove environmental pollution in air and water.

Photodegradation and Mineralization of Phenol Using TiO2Coated γ-Al2O3: Effect of Thermic Treatment

It is well-known that γ-Al2O3 possesses large, specific areas and high thermal, chemical, and mechanical resistance. Due to this, it is the most-used support for catalysts, in this case TiO2, as it enables it to achieve better dispersion and improves the activity in catalytic photodegradation reactions. In a previous work, it was observed that the optimal content of TiO2 in γ-Al2O3 was around 15% since the degradation of phenol results were maximized and a synergistic effect was generated by the interaction of both oxides. In addition, an increase in acidity crystal size and the generation of localized, oxygen-vacant, electronic states in the forbidden band of γ-Al2O3, were observed. This study focuses on the effect of the calcination temperature on a γ-Al2O3-TiO2 catalyst (15% w/w of TiO2) and its impact on photocatalytic activity. The catalysts prepared here were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, FTIR-pyridine adsorption, MAS-NMR, HRTEM-FFT, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy.

A facile chemical synthesis of nanoflake NiS2 layers and their photocatalytic activity

A single-phase and crystalline NiS₂ nanoflake layer was produced by a facile and novel approach consisting of a two-step growth process. First, a Ni(OH)₂ layer was synthesized by a chemical bath deposition approach using a nickel precursor and ammonia as the starting solution. In a second step, the obtained Ni(OH)₂ layer was transformed into a NiS₂ layer by a sulfurization process at 450 °C for 1 h. The XRD analysis showed a single-phase NiS₂ layer with no additional peaks related to any secondary phases. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further confirmed the formation of a single-phase NiS₂ layer. SEM revealed that the NiS₂ layer consisted of overlapping nanoflakes. The optical bandgap of the NiS₂ layer was evaluated with the Kubelka-Munk function from the diffuse reflectance spectrum (DRS) and was estimated to be around 1.19 eV, making NiS₂ suitable for the photodegradation of organic pollutants under solar light. The NiS₂ nanoflake layer showed photocatalytic activity for the degradation of phenol under solar irradiation at natural pH 6. The NiS₂ nanoflake layer exhibited good solar light photocatalytic activity in the photodegradation of phenol as a model organic pollutant.
