The evolution of NiMo unsupported catalysts with 3DOM structure for thiophene hydrodesulfurization

Study on the Performance of Ni-MoS2 Catalysts with Different MoS2 Structures for Dibenzothiophene Hydrodesulfurization

Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is an important process for the production of clean fuel oil, and the development of a new environmentally friendly, low-cost sulfided catalyst is key research in hydrogenation technology. Herein, commercial bulk MoS2 and NiCO3·2NiOH2·4H2O were first hydrothermally treated and then calcined in a H2 or N2 atmosphere to obtain Ni-MoS2 HDS catalysts with different structures. Mechanisms of hydrothermal treatment and calcination on Ni-MoS2 catalyst structures were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic performance of Ni-MoS2 catalysts was evaluated by the HDS reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT) on a fixed bed reactor, and the structure-activity relationship between the structures of the Ni-MoS2 catalyst and the HDS of DBT was discussed. The results showed that the lateral size, the number of stacked layers, and the S/Mo atomic ratio of MoS2 in the catalyst decreased and then increased with the increase of the hydrothermal treatment temperature, reaching the minimum at the hydrothermal treatment temperature of 150 °C, i.e., the lateral size of MoS2 in the catalyst was 20-36 nm, the number of stacked layers of MoS2 was 5.4, and the S/Mo ratio in the catalyst was 1.80. In addition, the effects of different calcination temperatures and calcination atmospheres on the catalyst structures were investigated at the optimum hydrothermal treatment temperature. The Ni-Mo-S and NixSy ratios of the catalysts increased and then decreased with the increasing calcination temperature under a H2 atmosphere, reaching a maximum at a calcination temperature of 400 °C. Therefore, DBT exhibited the best HDS activity over the H-NiMo-150-400 catalyst, and the desulfurization rate of DBT reached 94.7% at a reaction temperature of 320 °C.

Unsupported Ni—Mo—W Hydrotreating Catalyst: Influence of the Atomic Ratio of Active Metals on the HDS and HDN Activity

Hydrotreating is one of the largest processes used in a refinery to improve the quality of oil products. The great demand of the present is to develop more active catalysts which could improve the energy efficiency of the process when it is necessary for heavier feedstock to be processed. Unsupported catalysts could solve this problem, because they contain the greatest amount of sulfide active sites, which significantly increase catalysts’ activity. Unfortunately, most of the information on the preparation and properties of unsupported catalysts is devoted to powder systems, while industrial plants require granular catalysts. Therefore, the present work describes a method for the preparation of granular Ni—Mo—W unsupported hydrotreating catalysts and studies the influence of the Ni/Mo/W atomic ratio on their properties. Catalysts have been prepared by plasticizing Ni—Mo—W precursor with aluminum hydroxide followed by granulation and drying stages. Ni—Mo—W precursor and granular catalysts were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption method, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and thermal analysis. Granular catalysts were sulfided through a liquid-phase sulfidation procedure and tested in hydrotreating of straight-run vacuum gasoil. It was shown that the Ni/Mo/W atomic ratio influenced the formation and composition of active compounds and had almost no influence on the textural properties of catalysts. The best hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activity was obtained for the catalyst with Ni/Mo/W ratio—1/0.15/0.85, while hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) activity of the catalysts is very similar.

Monolayer CoMoS Catalysts on Hierarchically Porous Alumina Spheres as Bifunctional Nanomaterials for Hydrodesulfurization and Energy Storage Applications

In this work, CoMoS catalysts were synthesized onto porous alumina spheres obtained using Pluronic P-123 (PS) or urea (US) and used as bifunctional nanomaterials for two energy applications: hydrodesulfurization and energy storage. For the first application, the catalysts were assessed in a hydrodesulfurization reactor using two model sulfur molecules, dibenzothiophene and 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene, as well as feeding a heavy oil fraction. The results indicated that the spheres obtained by Pluronic P-123 allowed a greater dispersion degree of MoS2 slabs than US, indicating that the size and hierarchically porous structure of alumina spheres played a principal role as a booster of the HDS catalytic efficiency of DBT, 4,6 DMDBT and diesel fuel. Then, these catalysts were used for the electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER), which take place in rechargeable Zn-air batteries. For the ORR, the CoMoS catalyst on PS in the presence of a conductive support (N-doped carbon nanotubes + graphene) displayed an overpotential of only 90 mV in comparison with Pt/C. Importantly, the chalcogenide enabled an increase in the stability, maintaining almost two times higher current retention than Pt/C for the ORR and IrO2/C for the OER. These results suggest that expended chalcogenides from the hydrodesulfurization industry can have a second life as co-catalysts for renewable energy storage systems, enabling a circular economy.
