Joint effects of chronic exposure to environmentally relevant levels of nonylphenol and cadmium on the reproductive functions in male rockfish Sebastiscus marmoratus

Effect of cadmium stress on gill tissues of Magallana gigas after adaptation to different light conditions

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly soluble pollutant in aquatic ecosystems that poses a significant threat to mollusks. In this study, a solar simulator with a filter was used to establish two light conditions (with and without the ultraviolet [UV] spectrum) for a light-adaptation period (120 d) in Magallana gigas. Following adaptation, Cd was introduced into seawater containing M. gigas. Comprehensive bioaccumulation, physiological, and transcriptomic analyses were conducted to assess the responses of M. gigas gill tissues to Cd exposure following adaptation to simulated light. The results demonstrated that Cd exposure under both light conditions increased activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione S-transferase, and altered glutathione content, indicating that Cd consistently induced oxidative stress in M. gigas gill tissues. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed more severe cellular structural damage and a reduction in mitochondria under Cd exposure with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) than under UV radiation, suggesting a more pronounced stress response under PAR. This may lead to lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial dysfunction in gill tissues. Additionally, co-exposure to Cd and UV radiation upregulated genes related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the gill tissue, indicating increased energy demand. This high-energy state may have reduced the stress induced by Cd in the gill tissue. These findings highlight the importance of exploring different response strategies among mollusks with varied environmental adaptabilities, while underscoring the significance of considering their environmental acclimation history when investigating the toxicological mechanisms of heavy metal exposure in marine species.

Effects of cadmium exposure during the breeding period on development and reproductive functions in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus)

Cadmium is a common reproductive toxin in aquatic systems. Cd exposure of fish species at high concentrations can severely affect the reproductive function of fish. However, the underlying toxicity of cadmium exposure at low concentrations on the reproductive function in parental fish remains unclear. To investigate the impacts of cadmium exposure on reproductive capability, eighty-one male and eighty-one female rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus) were exposed to cadmium at 0 (control group), 5 and 10 μg/L for 28 days, and then transferred into clean water to pair spawn. The results showed that cadmium exposure at 5 or 10 μg/L for 28 days in rare minnows could reduce the success rates of pair spawning in parent rare minnows, lessen no-spawning activities, and prolong the time for first spawning. Furthermore, the mean egg production of the cadmium exposure group increased. The fertility rate of the control group was significantly higher than that of the 5 μg/L cadmium exposure group. Anatomical and histological data further revealed that the intensity of atretic vitellogenic follicles significantly increased and spermatozoa vacuolated after cadmium exposure (p < 0.05), but slightly increased the condition factor (CF), and relatively stable gonadosomatic index (GSI) values were also observed in the cadmium exposure groups. These observed results indicated that cadmium exposure at 5 or 10 μg/L affected the reproductive activity of paired rare minnow by accumulating Cd in the gonads, and the effect diminished over time. The reproductive risk of low-dose cadmium exposure to fish species remains a cause for concern.

Separate and combined effects of cadmium (Cd) and nonylphenol (NP) on growth and antioxidative enzymes in Hydrocharis dubia (Bl.) Backer

Cadmium (Cd) is considered a priority pollutant, and nonylphenol (NP) is a common organic pollutant in water environments. However, the ecological risks of combined Cd and NP pollution have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the effects of Cd, NP, and Cd-NP on the growth and physiology of Hydrocharis dubia (Bl.) Backer were studied. The results indicated that Cd-NP joint toxicity is concentration-dependent. The joint toxicity of Cd and NP on H. dubia was antagonistic when the concentrations of Cd + NP were 0.01 + 0.1/1 mg/L. At 0.5 + 0.1/1 mg/L, Cd and NP had a strong synergistic effect on H. dubia. In addition, plant growth was significantly inhibited, and the chlorophyll contents were significantly reduced under Cd, NP, or Cd-NP exposure. The plant's antioxidant enzyme system was destroyed. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were significantly decreased under NP-only exposure. The activity of SOD was significantly decreased under Cd-only and under joint exposure. Compound pollution exceeded the oxidative defense capacity of the plants, so the H₂O₂ content increased significantly. Our results indicated that the ecotoxicity of NP combined with Cd may be exacerbated in aquatic environments and cause obvious damage to H. dubia.
