Abstract
A coumarin-appended calixarene derivative ( CouC4A ) and a hybrid material generated by covalently linking this onto a silica surface ( CouC4A@SiO 2 ) were synthesized and were characterized by various analytical, spectroscopy, and microscopy methods. Both these materials are capable of sensing Fe3+ with greater sensitivity and selectivity. The sensitivity is enhanced by 30,000 fold on going from a simple solution phase to the silica surface with the limit of Fe3+ detection being 1.75 ± 0.4 pM when CouC4A@SiO 2 is used, and the sensing is partially reversible with phosphates, while it is completely reversible with adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP). While the calix precursor, CouC4A , has a limitation to work in water, anchoring this onto SiO2 endowed it with the benefit of its use in water as well as in buffer and thereby extends its application toward Fe3+ sensing even in the biorelevant medium such as fetal bovine serum and human serum. The hybrid material is biocompatible and shows ∼90% cell viability in the case of MDA-MB231 and 3T3 cell lines. CouC4A@SiO 2 functions as a reversible sensor for Fe3+ with the use of ATP in vitro as well as in biological cells. Thus, the inorganic-organic hybrid material, such as, CouC4A@SiO 2 , is an indispensable material for sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+ in a picomolar range in solution and in nanomolar to micromolar range in biorelevant fluids and biological cells, respectively.

Abstract
A novel turn-on fluorescent sensor based on a calix[4]arene with two coumarin units as fluorophores and iminogroups as ionophores on the upper rim has been synthesised. Its recognition properties towards heavy and transition metal ions have been studied by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrometry. The compound showed an enhanced fluorescent intensity in the presence of Fe3+ or Cr3+ ion, a high selectivity to Fe3+ or Cr3+ ions and a complexation ratio towards Fe3+ or Cr3+ of 1:1. The association constant for Fe3+ was 5.37×105 M−1 and for Cr3+ was 9.18×105 M−1.

Abstract
Iron chelators, through their capacity to modulate the iron concentration in cells, are promising molecules for cancer chemotherapy. Chelators with high lipophilicity easily enter into cells and deplete the iron intracellular pool. Consequently, iron-dependent enzymes, such as ribonucleotide reductase, which is over-expressed in cancer cells, become nonfunctional. A series of calix[4]arene derivatives substituted at the lower rim by ICL670, a strong FeIII chelator, have been synthesized. Physicochemical properties and antiproliferative, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis effects of two calix[4]arenes mono- (5a) or disubstituted (5b) with ICL670 have been studied. These compounds form metal complexes in a ratio of one to two ligands per FeIII atom as shown by combined analyses of the protometric titration curves and ESIMS spectra. The grafting of an ICL670 group on a calix[4]arene core does not significantly alter the acid-base properties, but improves the iron-chelating and lipophilicity properties. The best antiproliferative and anti-angiogenic results were obtained with calix[4]arene ligand 5a, which possesses the highest corresponding properties. Analyses of molecular dynamics simulations performed on the two calix[4]arenes provide three-dimensional structures of the complexes and proved 5a to be the most stable upon complexation.

Abstract
Iron is one of the most important elements in metabolic processes, being indispensable for all living systems and therefore it is extensively distributed in environmental and biological materials. However, both its deficiency and excess from the normal permissible limit can induce serious disorders. Therefore, several analytical techniques have been adopted for the detection of iron. Among the various techniques used for its detection, the method based on fluorescent sensors has received considerable interest in recent years because of its ability to provide online monitoring of very low concentrations without any pre-treatment of the sample together with the advantages of spatial and temporal resolution. In this article, efforts have been made to review the various molecular and supramolecular fluorescent sensors that have been developed for the selective detection of iron(III).

Abstract
A novel poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer, comprising rhodamine B unit in the core and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone unit at the periphery, has been synthesized and characterized. The dendrimer shows dramatic increase in its fluorescence intensity in the presence of proton and metal cations, especially in the presence of Cr(3+). The complex formed by dendrimer and Cr(3+) in ethanol solution has also been studied, considering the potential application for Cr(3+) fluorescent sensor. The influence of the unique chemical structure and resulted photoinduced electron transfer, as well as spirolactam ring-opening on the photophysical properties of the product has been investigated.
