Abstract
A series of novel N,N-carbonyl-bridged dipyrrinone fluorophores have been directly constructed from α-halogenated dipyrrinones, which are conveniently obtained from the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of readily available α,α'-dihalodipyrrins. This novel methodology affords efficient modulation of the functional groups at both the meso- and α-positions of this fluorophore. These resultant dyes show tunable absorption and emission wavelengths, good molar absorption coefficients, relatively large Stokes shifts, and excellent fluorescence quantum yields up to 0.99, and have been successfully applied in both one- and two-photon fluorescence microscopy imaging in living cells.

Abstract
Dipyrrinones are nonfluorescent yellow-pigmented constituents of bilirubin that undergo Z to E isomerization when excited with UV/blue light. Mechanical restriction of the E/Z isomerization process results in highly fluorescent compounds such as N,N-methylene-bridged dipyrrinones and xanthoglows. This manuscript describes the first examples of dipyrrinone analogues, which exhibit fluorescence without covalently linking the pyrole-pyrrolidine nitrogen atoms. Instead these analogues restrict E/Z isomerization through intramolecular hydrogen bonding, resulting in mild to moderately fluorescent compounds (ΦF = 0.01-0.30). Further, in basic solutions (pH > 12), the dipyrrinone analogues readily deprotonate and absorption/emission profiles of the fluorophores red-shifts by 10-49 nm. Directly from commercial materials, 10 analogues were prepared in 41-96% yields in one step. To estimate the capacity of which intramolecular hydrogen bonding has upon restricting the E/Z isomerization process, conformational energies of all analogues, in both the protonated and deprotonated species, were explored by using quantum-mechanical density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. The computed strengths of the intramolecular hydrogen bonds are related to the barriers of rotation about the 5-6 bond and both correlate with the experimentally measured fluorescence quantum yields.

Abstract
A BODIPY-based colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor 1 anchored with dipyridylamino (DPA) receptor has been designed, synthesized and characterized. It exhibited a simultaneous sensitive recognition for Cu2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions. With the addition of these three kinds of metal ions into 1 in CH3CN, its initial absorption maximum displayed obvious blue shifts, and the color changes of the solution could be clearly observed by naked eyes. Besides, the fluorescence intensity was significantly enhanced accompanied with the appearance of new emission peaks at 587 nm for Pb2+ and Hg2+ ions and 545 nm for Cu2+ ions. These results were attributed to the π-deconjugation between N-pyridyl and the BODIPY group due to the binding of metal ions with the BODIPY and DPA groups. Based on the sensing behaviors of 1, three logic gates (OR, INHIBT and combinational logic gate) were constructed correspondingly.

Abstract
Regioselective reactivity of the 1-methyl group of free-base dipyrrins is explored, including discussion of tautomerism to provide exocyclic alkenyl reactivity. Deuterium is installed so as to generate dipyrrins substituted with deuterated methyl groups. Furthermore, the 1-methyl group reacts to become involved in C-C bonds involving only sp3-hybridised carbon atoms. The isolation of an elusive framework featuring a dipyrrin substituted with a pyrrole in a non-vinylogous fashion is also reported. The use of asymmetric dipyrrins featuring an electron-withdrawing group on one of the pyrrolic units results in regioselective reaction of the alpha-methyl group distal to the electron-withdrawing group.

Abstract
The two first examples of zwitterionic BODIPYs have been synthesized via a simple SN-Ar methodology. The molecules exhibit excellent optical behavior, such as a large Stokes shift in solution and therefore a very intense emission, and can thus avoid self-quenching. The zwitterionic nature of the molecules was unambiguously elucidated using single crystal XRD studies. The electronic conjugation was investigated by NMR, DFT (NICS (0)) and XRD analysis. Due to their inherent ionic nature, their enhanced solubility in aqueous conditions was exploited for their utility in bio-imaging and cell viability studies. These molecules demonstrate promising localization inside live yeast cells.
