Synthesis and properties of a novel bolaamphiphile surfactant derived from proline

Robust Superhydrophobic Brass Mesh with Electrodeposited Hydroxyapatite Coating for Versatile Applications

A robust superhydrophobic brass mesh was fabricated based on a low-energy surface and a roughness on the nano/micro-meter scale. It was carried out by the forming of hydroxyapatite (HP) coatings on its surface through a constant current electro-deposition process, followed by immersion in fluoroalkylsilane solution. Surface morphology, composition and wetting behavior were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high speed camera, and contact angle goniometer. Under optimal conditions, the resulting brass mesh exhibited superhydrophobicity, excellent anti-corrosion (η = 91.2%), and anti-scaling properties. While the surfactant liquid droplets of tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) with different concentration were dropped on the superhydrophobic surface, maximum droplet rebounding heights and different contact angles (CAs) were observed and measured from side-view imaging. The plots of surfactant-concentration−maximum bounding height/CA were constructed to determine its critical-micelle-concentration (CMC) value. Close CMC results of 1.91 and 2.32 mM based on the determination of maximum rebounding height and CAs were obtained. Compared with its theoretical value of 2.1 mM, the relative errors are 9% and 10%, respectively. This indicated that the novel application based on the maximum rebounding height could be an alternative approach for the CMC determination of other surfactants.

Cationic Bola Form Metallosurfactants Based on Isothiouronium, Synthesis and Anti-Microbial Activity

Two series of well-defined dimeric metallo-bolaamphiphiles (bola surfactants) with the coordinated metal ions (Cu, Co, Zn) were prepared. These oligomeric surfactants consist of simple monomeric cationic surfactant fragments which are coupled via the hydrophilic ammonium chloride head groups by C6 and C12 spacer groups of different lengths. FTIR and 1HNMR identification techniques confirmed the obtained products. Measurements of surface tensions showed that the synthesized Bola amphiphiles have the desired, relatively low critical micelle formation concentrations (CMC). Bola amphiphiles with long spacer groups (C12) have a pronounced surface activity. The properties of these cationic surfactant oligomers in aqueous solution such as micellization and surface activity were discussed in relation to spacer group. In addition, the synthesized compounds were examined for their anti-microbial activity using the agar diffusion technique.

Incorporation of bixin in aqueous media: Self-formulation with sorbitol ester of norbixin

We have previously reported how the natural food colorant, bixin, was enzymatically modified by appending sorbitol to the bixin scaffold. The resulted product, sorbitol ester of norbixin (SEN) was expected to be more hydrophilic. The present study aimed to investigate the physical behaviour of SEN in aqueous media. The property of SEN was studied together with non-reacted bixin as separation of the two compounds was unsuccessful. The SEN molecules behaved as a bolaamphiphile in aqueous media, underwent self-association and develop a hydrophilic aggregate. SEN-aggregates could uptake the non-reacted bixin molecules inside its hydrophobic moiety and dispersed it in aqueous media. Aggregation of SEN molecules with incorporated bixin resulted in a hypsochromic shift of the absorption spectra indicting H-aggregation. Dynamic light scattering showed the formation of aggregates with an average hydrodynamic radius 38 ± 2 nm. The dispersibility of the aggregates was affected by pH and the ionic strength of the media.
