Biomedical Applications of Chinese Herb-Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles by Phytonanotechnology

Recent advances in nanotechnology have opened up new avenues for the controlled synthesis of nanoparticles for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Chinese herbal medicine is a natural gift to humanity, and it has long been used as an antibacterial and anticancer agent. This study will highlight recent developments in the phytonanotechnological synthesis of Chinese herbal medicines to utilize their bioactive components in biomedical and therapeutic applications. Biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as a promising alternative to chemical and physical approaches for various biomedical applications. The comprehensive rationale of combinational or synergistic effects of Chinese herb-based AgNPs synthesis was investigated with superior physicochemical and biological properties, and their biomedical applications, including antimicrobial and anticancer activity and wound healing properties. AgNPs can damage the cell ultrastructure by triggering apoptosis, which includes the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA disintegration, protein inactivation, and the regulation of various signaling pathways. However, the anticancer mechanism of Chinese herbal medicine-based AgNPs is more complicated due to the potential toxicity of AgNPs. Further in-depth studies are required to address Chinese herbs' various bioactive components and AgNPs as a synergistic approach to combat antimicrobial resistance, therapeutic efficiency of drug delivery, and control and prevention of newly emerged diseases.

Bifunctional cyclomatrix polyphosphazene-based hybrid with abundant decorating groups: Synthesis and application as efficient electrochemical Pb(II) probe and methylene blue absorbent

HYPOTHESIS

The construction of novel functional cyclomatrix polyphosphazenes (CPPs) hybrid, which with diverse decorating groups, is a challenging task due to the structural limitation of available reaction substrates (phenols and amines).

EXPERIMENTS

Herein, a phenolic hydroxyl (OH) modified ployamide derivative (P2) was successfully prepared via novel benzoxazine-isocyanide chemistry (BIC). A kind of CPP hybrid (P3), which with abundant functional groups (amide, tertiary amine, benzoxazine and phenolic hydroxyl) was prepared subsequently by the condensation between P2 and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP). Chemical structure, elemental composition, morphology, porous properties and crystallinity of P3 were systematically analyzed here. The electrochemical detection of lead ion (Pb²⁺) was realized by using P3-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE/Nafion/P3) as the working electrode. Besides this, given the unique chemical structure and morphology of P3, the selective adsorption of methylene blue (MB) by P3 was also studied here.

FINDINGS

Experimental results indicated that that P3 can act as bifunctional hybrid material to solve environmental issues.

Improving the biocidal activity of outdoor coating formulations by using zeolite-supported silver nanoparticles

Zeolite/nanoparticle composites are synthesized and used as additive for waterborne formulations in replacement of traditional isothiazolinone-based biocides. Silver nanoparticles dispersed onto micrometer-sized crystals of A-type zeolite were prepared by thermal treatment or chemical reduction methods applied to the Ag-exchanged zeolite. The antifungal efficiency against Trichoderma sp. of waterborne outdoor coatings containing the supported silver nanoparticles, measured in terms of inhibition halo development, shows similar results to those obtained by using traditional organic biocides, the type, size and size distribution of the nanoparticles being the main factors affecting the biocidal action of the prepared coatings.
