Impact of surface hydroxylation in MgO-/SnO-nanocluster modified TiO2 anatase (101) composites on visible light absorption, charge separation and reducibility

Constructing TiO2@MOF S-scheme heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics and Cr(VI) photoreduction

The residue of antibiotics and various pollutants has led to an urgent issue in environmental pollution control. In this study, we constructed an S-scheme P-TiO2@Zn-MOF heterojunction by self-assembling phosphonate-based MOFs on mesoporous phosphate-TiO2 beads. Compared to monomers, the P-TiO2@Zn-MOF2.0 heterojunction exhibits significantly higher photocatalytic activity for the photo-oxidative degradation of ciprofloxacin (97.2% in 60 min) and tetracyclic (TC) (94.5% in 100 min) and the photo-reduction of Cr(VI) (92.7% in 60 min) under simulated sunlight. Experimental results and calculations revealed the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers at the P-TiO2@Zn-MOF2.0 S-scheme heterojunction interface, enabling the formation of highly active superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. Furthermore, the hybrid maintained excellent Cr(VI) photoreduction performance after recycling tests in actual electroplating industry wastewater at a strongly acidic pH.

Eco-Friendly Polysaccharide-Based Synthesis of Nanostructured MgO: Application in the Removal of Cu2+ in Wastewater

The present study described three synthesis routes using different natural polysaccharides as low-cost non-toxic fuels and complexing agents for obtaining MgO. Cassava starch, Aloe vera leaves (mainly acemannan) gel, and citric pectin powder were mixed with magnesium nitrate salt and calcined at 750 °C for 2 h. The samples were named according to the polysaccharide: cassava starch (MgO-St), citrus pectin (MgO-CP), and Aloe vera (MgO-Av). X-ray diffraction identified the formation of a monophasic periclase structure (FCC type) for the three samples. The N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherms (B.E.T. method) showed an important difference in textural properties, with a higher pore volume (V_max = 89.76 cc/g) and higher surface area (SA = 43.93 m²/g) obtained for MgO-St, followed by MgO-CP (V_max = 11.01 cc/g; SA = 7.01 m²/g) and MgO-Av (V_max = 6.44 cc/g; SA = 6.63 m²/g). These data were consistent with the porous appearance observed in SEM images. Porous solids are interesting as adsorbents for removing metallic and molecular ions from wastewater. The removal of copper ions from water was evaluated, and the experimental data at equilibrium were adjusted according to the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin isotherms. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) was 6331.117, 5831.244, and 6726.623 mg·g^-1 for the adsorbents MgO-St, MgO-Av, and MgO-CP, respectively. The results of the adsorption isotherms indicated that the synthesized magnesium oxides could be used to decrease the amount of Cu²⁺ ions in wastewater.

Performance Enhancement of Actual Wastewater Treatment and Electricity Generation Through Surface Modified TiO₂ Nanotube Arrays Based Photoanode Photocatalytic Fuel Cell

Herein, we report a surface modified TiO₂ nanowire arrays (NAs) photoanode based photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) towards simultaneous enhancement of actual wastewater treatment and electricity generation under visible light irradiation. TiO₂ NAs were facile fabricated via two-step anodization process in ethylene glycol and glycerin solution, respectively. Actual wastewater samples were directly applied to evaluate the PFC performance in terms of wastewater degradation and electricity generation through the as-prepared TiO₂ NAs photoanode without loading noble-metals or semiconductors. TiO₂ NAs photoanode prepared from ethylene glycol solution demonstrated a highly ordered surface network, exhibiting short-circuit current density and fill factor nearly 4.3 times and 1.4 times higher than pristine TiO₂ NAs photoanode prepared according to previous reports. The experimental results revealed that the fabrication of TiO₂ NAs by a facile surface modification in ethylene glycol solution can be considered a low-cost and scalable routine for enhancing performance of PFC photoanode towards efficient actual wastewater treatment and electricity generation.

Binding and stability of MgO monomers on anatase TiO2(101)

In catalysis, MgO is often used to modify the acid-base properties of support oxides and to stabilize supported metal atoms and particles on oxides. In this study, we show how the sublimation of MgO powder can be used to deposit MgO monomers, hither on anatase TiO₂(101). A combination of x-ray electron spectroscopy, high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory is employed to gain insight into the MgO monomer binding, electronic and vibrational properties, and thermal stability. In the most stable configuration, the Mg and O of the MgO monomer bind to two surface oxygens and one undercoordinated surface titanium, respectively. The additional binding weakens the Mg-O monomer bond and makes Mg more ionic. The monomers are thermally stable up to 600 K, where the onset of diffusion into the TiO₂ bulk is observed. The monomeric MgO species on TiO₂(101) represent an ideal atomically precise system with modified acid-base properties and will be employed in our future catalytic studies.

Construction of ZnO/ZIF-9 heterojunction photocatalyst: enhanced photocatalytic performance and mechanistic insight

Heterostructure construction in photocatalysts is an effective method to improve their catalytic activity because of the remarkable role that the heterostructure plays in charge separation.

Activation of Water on MnOx-Nanocluster-Modified Rutile (110) and Anatase (101) TiO2 and the Role of Cation Reduction

Surface modification of titania surfaces with dispersed metal oxide nanoclusters has the potential to enhance photocatalytic activity. These modifications can induce visible light absorption and suppress charge carrier recombination which are vital in improving the efficiency. We have studied heterostructures of Mn4O6 nanoclusters modifying the TiO2 rutile (110) and anatase (101) surfaces using density functional theory (DFT) corrected for on-site Coulomb interactions (DFT + U). Such studies typically focus on the pristine surface, free of the point defects and surface hydroxyls present in real surfaces. In our study we have considered partial hydroxylation of the rutile and anatase surfaces and the role of cation reduction, via oxygen vacancy formation, and how this impacts on a variety of properties governing the photocatalytic performance such as nanocluster adsorption, light absorption, charge separation, and reducibility. Our results indicate that the modifiers adsorb strongly at the surface and that modification extends light absorption into the visible range. MnOx-modified titania can show an off-stoichiometric ground state, through oxygen vacancy formation and cation reduction spontaneously, and both modified rutile and anatase are highly reducible with moderate energy costs. Manganese ions are therefore present in a mixture of oxidation states. Photoexcited electrons and holes localize at cluster metal and oxygen sites, respectively. The interaction of water at the modified surfaces depends on the stoichiometry and spontaneous dissociation to surface bound hydroxyls is favored in the presence of oxygen vacancies and reduced metal cations. Comparisons with bare TiO2 and other TiO2-based photocatalyst materials are presented throughout.
