Ionic/electronic conductivity regulation of n-type polyoxadiazole lithium sulfonate conductive polymer binders for high-performance silicon microparticle anodes

Sponge-Like Porous-Conductive Polymer Coating for Ultrastable Silicon Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Urgent calls for reversible cycling performance of silicon (Si) requires an efficient solution to maintain the silicon-electrolyte interface stable. Herein, a conductive biphenyl-polyoxadiazole (bPOD) layer is coated on Si particles to enhance the electrochemical process and prolong the cells lifespan. The conformal bPOD coatings are mixed ionicelectronic conductors, which not only inhibit the infinite growth of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) but also endow electrodes with outstanding ion/electrons transport capacity. The superior 3D porous structure in the continuous phase allows the bPOD layers to act like a sponge to buffer volume variation, resulting in high structural stability. The in situ polymerized bPOD coating and it-driven thin LiF-rich SEI layer remarkably improve the lithium storage performance of Si anodes, showing a high reversible specific capacity of 1600 mAh g-1 even after 500 cycles at 1 A g-1 along with excellent rate capacity of over 1500 mAh g-1 at 3 A g-1 . It should be noticed that a long cycle life of 800 cycles with 1065 mAh g-1 at 3 A g-1 can also be achieved with a capacity retention of more than 80%. Therefore,  we  believe this unique polymer coating design paves the way for the widespread adoption of next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Body Armor-Inspired Double-Wrapped Binder with High Energy Dispersion for a Stable SiOx Anode

The high specific capacity and relatively low volume expansion of silicon suboxide (SiO_x) highlight its potential as one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, the traditional binder of polyacrylic acid (PAA) still cannot adapt to enormous stress during the repeated volume expansion/contraction owing to its intrinsic rigid backbone. Inspired by the "soft and hard composite body armor", we herein design a double-wrapped binder consisting of PAA with a high internal Young's modulus (hard part) and polyurethane (DOU) with a low external Young's modulus (soft part). When the SiO_x particle expands during lithiation, the rigid PAA firstly accommodates the volume change to dissipate most of the inner stress, and the elastic DOU with triple dynamic bonds serves as a buffer layer to absorb the residual stress via the breakage/formation of dynamic bonds. By optimizing the PAA/DOU ratio, the SiO_x anode can maintain the integrity during long-term cycling and deliver a relatively high reversible capacity of 1064.1 mAh g^-1 with a preeminent capacity retention of 83.7% at 0.5C after 300 cycles. Such a double-wrapped binder can provide a novel design strategy for multicomponent functional polymer binders toward high-performance SiO_x anodes.

N-Type Polyoxadiazole Conductive Polymer Binders Derived High-Performance Silicon Anodes Enabled by Crosslinking Metal Cations

The dilemma of employing high-capacity battery materials and maintaining the electrodes' electrical and mechanical integrity requires a unique binder system design. Polyoxadiazole (POD) is an n-type conductive polymer with excellent electronic and ionic conductive properties, which has acted as a silicon binder to achieve high specific capacity and rate performance. However, due to its linear structure, it cannot effectively alleviate the enormous volume change of silicon during the process of lithiation/delithiation, resulting in poor cycle stability. This paper systematically studied metal ion (i.e., Li⁺, Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, and Sr²⁺)-crosslinked PODs as silicon anode binders. The results show that the ionic radius and valence state remarkably influence the polymer's mechanical properties and the electrolyte's infiltration. Electrochemical methods have thoroughly explored the effects of different ion crosslinks on the ionic and electronic conductivity of POD in the intrinsic and n-doped states. Attributed to the excellent mechanical strength and good elasticity, Ca-POD can better maintain the overall integrity of the electrode structure and conductive network, significantly improving the cycling stability of the silicon anode. The cell with such binders still retains a capacity of 1770.1 mA h g^-1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, which is ∼285% that of the cell with the PAALi binder (620.6 mA h g^-1). This novel strategy using metal-ion crosslinking polymer binders and the unique experimental design provides a new pathway of high-performance binders for next-generation rechargeable batteries.

Catalyst-free synthesis of diverse fluorescent polyoxadiazoles for the facile formation and morphology visualization of microporous films and cell imaging

The development of facile polymerizations toward functional heterocyclic polymers is of great significance for chemistry and materials science. As an important class of heterocyclic polymers, polyoxadiazoles (PODs) have found applications in various fields. However, the synthetic difficulties of PODs greatly restrict their structural diversity and property investigation. Herein, we report a series of catalyst-free multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) that can facilely synthesize functional PODs with well-defined and diversified topological structures from commercially available or readily accessible aldehydes, carboxylic acids, secondary amines, and (N-isocyanimino)triphenylphosphorane at room temperature. Unlike conventional Ugi polycondensations, the present Ugi-type MCPs can in situ generate oxadiazole moieties in polymer backbones. The obtained PODs possess good solubility, high thermal and morphological stability, and excellent film-forming ability. The introduction of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) moieties together with the inherent structural features of PODs endow these polymers with multiple functionalities. The AIE-active linear PODs can form fluorescent microporous films with stable and ordered structures based on the simple breath figure patterning method, and the self-assembly morphologies can be directly visualized by fluorescence microscopy in a high-contrast and sensitive manner. Moreover, both the linear and hyperbranched AIE-active PODs possess excellent biocompatibility, good lysosome specificity, and excellent photobleaching resistance, which enable them to serve as promising lysosome-specific fluorescent probes in biological imaging.

Random Copolymer Hydrogel as Elastic Binder for the SiOx Microparticle Anode in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Silicon suboxides (SiO_x) have been widely concerned as a practical anode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to their relatively high theoretical capacity and lower volume change compared to silicon (Si). Nevertheless, traditional binder poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) still cannot hold the integrity of the SiO_x particle due to its weak van der Waals force. Herein, a copolymer binder for SiO_x microparticles is synthesized through a facile method of free radical polymerization between acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA). By adjusting the mass ratio of the AM/AA monomer, the copolymer binder can generate a covalent-noncovalent network with superior elastic properties from the synergistic effect. During electrochemical testing, the SiO_x anode with the optimal copolymer binder (AM/AA = 3:1) delivered a reversible capacity of 734 mAh g^-1 (two times that of commercial graphite) at 0.5C after 300 cycles. Thus, this work developed a green and effective strategy for synthesizing a water-soluble binder for Si-based anodes.
