Angle-independent responsive organogel retroreflective structural color film for colorimetric sensing of humidity and organic vapors

Switchable and conspicuous retroreflective sensors inspired by the wing scale of an emerald swallowtail

Butterfly wings possess distinct micro/nanostructures that contribute to their vibrant coloration, light-trapping capabilities, and sensitivity to various stimuli. These complex features have inspired the creation of diverse devices and systems, such as sensors, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and robotics. Specifically, the wing scales of the Emerald Swallowtail (Papilio palinurus) display iridescent, polarization-sensitive, and retroreflective colors due to their hierarchical structures. However, current technologies fail to mimic these natural designs fully, limiting their practical application in everyday life. In this study, we introduce a groundbreaking method for fabricating artificial wing scales that emulate the biological structure's functionality with a much simpler geometry. By integrating self-graded lossy media into metallic micro-concavity arrays, we achieve pronounced iridescent effects in both coaxial and non-coaxial arrangements, while preserving retroreflective properties. In particular, the simplified design allows for switchable color patterns based on the viewing angle. Demonstrating the concept, we successfully employ these conspicuous retroreflectors in hydrogen gas detection and the bi-directional/switchable recognition of patterned signals.

Identification and sensing of hydrogen fluoride (HF) on aluminum phosphide (Al24P24) nanocage in both gas and water phases: electronic study via density-functional theory computations

CONTEXT

Hydrogen fluoride (HF) is extensively present in environmental and industrial pollutants. It may harm the health of humans and animals. This work evaluated the adsorption of an (HF)n linear chain (n = 1, 2, 3, and 4) onto an AlP nanocage through ab initio calculations for the evaluation of its performance in sensing and monitoring (HF)n within aqueous and gaseous media.

METHODS

The present work adopted density functional theory (DFT) at the 6-311 G (d, p) basis set to analyze (HF)n linear chain adsorption onto AlP nanocages with the B3LYP functional. This paper examined the adsorption energy, configuration optimization, work function, and charge transfer. In addition, the contributions of the HF linear chain size to electronic properties and adsorption energy were measured. The dimer form of HF on the surface of AlP nanocages was found to have the highest stability based on the adsorption energy values. Once (HF)n was adsorbed onto the nanocage, the HOMO-LUMO energy gap experienced a large reduction from 3.87 to 3.03 eV, enhancing electrical conductivity. In addition, AlP nanocages may serve in the sensing of (HF)n under multiple environmental pollutants.

Melanin-Integrated Structural Color Hybrid Hydrogels for Wound Healing

Hydrogel patches have outstanding values in wound treatment; challenges in this field are concentrated on developing functional and intelligent hydrogel patches with new antibacterial strategies for improving healing process. Herein, a novel melanin-integrated structural color hybrid hydrogel patches for wound healing is presented. Such hybrid hydrogel patches are fabricated by infusing asiatic acid (AA)-loaded low melting-point agarose (AG) pregel into the melanin nanoparticles (MNPs)-integrated fish gelatin inverse opal film. In this system, MNPs not only impart the hybrid hydrogels with properties of photothermal antibacterial and antioxidant, but also improve the visibility of structural colors by providing an inherent dark background. Besides, the photothermal effect of MNPs under near-infrared irradiation can also trigger liquid transformation of AG component in hybrid patch, resulting in the controllable release of its loaded proangiogenic AA. Attracting, this drug release induced refractive index variations in the patch can be detected as visible structural color shifting, which can be used to monitor their delivery processes. Benefiting from these features, the hybrid hydrogel patches are demonstrated to achieve excellent therapeutic effects for in vivo wound treatment. Thus, it is believed that the proposed melanin-integrated structural color hybrid hydrogels are valuable as multifunctional patches for clinical applications.

Construction of cellulose structural-color pigments with tunable colors and iridescence/non-iridescence

Structural colorations have been recognized as a significant way to replace conventional organic dyes for paints, inks, packaging, and cosmetics because of brilliant colors, high stability, and eco-friendliness. However, most current structural-color pigments present an iridescent appearance, and it remains difficult to mitigate a trade-off between lowering the iridescence effect and maintaining the color saturation and brightness. Here, we demonstrate a universal yet economical approach to prepare cellulose structural-color pigments with different sizes. A combined ultrasonication and grinding treatment is explored to adjust the pigment colors as well as control the iridescence-to-non-iridescence transition that depends on the pigment size. The cellulose pigments can be applied on irregular and curved surfaces, having high water-, chemical-, and mechanical-resistances. With humidity-sensing behaviors, the pigments can be further integrated into monitoring systems for environmental management. Such a preparation strategy overcomes the limitation of controlling iridescent and non-iridescent structural colors without sacrificing color properties, which may bring more opportunities to develop new eco-friendly pigments for wide applications.

Bis-Pyridine-Based Organogel with AIE Effect and Sensing Performance towards Hg2

A novel gelator (1) based on a bis-pyridine derivative was designed and synthesized, which could form stable gels in methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, DMF/H₂O (4/1, v/v) and DMSO/H₂O (4/1, v/v). The self-assembly process of gelator 1 was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction and a water contact angle experiment. Gelator 1 exhibited obvious AIE behavior. On the base of its AIE, the gel of 1 could detect Hg²⁺, which resulted in fluorescence quenching and a gel–sol transition. ¹H NMR titration experiments with Hg²⁺ revealed that the metal coordination interaction induced the fluorescence quenching and the breakdown of the noncovalent interaction in the gel system. This research provides a new molecular mode for designing a functional self-assembly gel system.

A Surface Diffusion Barrier Strategy toward Water-Resistant Photonic Materials for Accurate Detection of Ethanol

Photonic materials that enable visual detection of chemicals have shown great potential for wide applications in chemical, environmental, biotechnological, and food industries, but until now, using hydrophilic photonic materials for tracing water-soluble chemicals remains a major challenge due to the strong water interference. Here, we demonstrate a two-step co-assembly and subsequent surface coating strategy to develop an ethanol-sensitive and anti-water interference photonic crystal film. By using citric acid as a co-assembly phase, high ethanol sensing is realized because of the strong intermolecular affinity. By controlling the thickness of the outer polyvinyl butyral layer, selective ethanol penetration but a water barrier is enabled. Notably, the composite photonic films are free-standing, highly flexible, and controllably structurally colored. We further present using the composite film to quantitatively trace ethanol/water mixtures and potentially track drunk driving as a colorimetric sensor. The heuristic two-step modification strategy proposed in this work not only overcomes the limitation of water interference for hydrophilic colorimetric sensors but also provides references to develop more new photonic materials with water resistance that need to be applied in water/humid environments.
